ST PETERSBURG --  Fishing for the double play, the Rays came up empty during the latter stages of Wednesday night's marquee pitching matchup between two of the top right-handers in the American League.
The double play that didn't come to fruition -- along with a healthy dose of Josh Beckett -- added up to a 3-0 Rays loss to the Red Sox at Tropicana Field with 19,388 watching.
In defeat, Tampa Bay fell to 36-32 on the season and 4 1/2 games behind first-place Boston in the AL East.

PHOENIX --  A key play at the plate, triples from some very unlikely sources and two hits from newcomer Bill Hall led to a win for Madison Bumgarner and Brian Wilson's Major League-leading 20th save.
The Giants are living large right now and, after beating the D-backs, 5-2, on Wednesday night at Chase Field, have won for the fourth time in the last five games to open a 2 1/2-game lead over second-place Arizona in the National League West. The teams conclude the three-game series on Thursday night.
