Carl Stankowski made 33 saves and Adam Kydd scored twice to lead Calgary to the win before 4,810 at the Scotiabank Saddledome. Mads Sogaard made 28 saves for Medicine Hat.

Lethbridge Hurricanes 5, Edmonton Oil Kings

Three goals in the latter stages of the third period pushed Lethbridge to the win, in front of 4,388 at Rogers Place. Dylan Cozens scored twice, once short handed and added two assists. Oliver Okuliar and Calen Addison scored power play goals and Bryan Thomson made 24 saves. VladimirAllstrov and Riley Sawchuk scored for Edmonton, Todd Scott stopped 25 shots.

Winnipeg ICE 5, Regina Pats 2

Winnipeg's three-goal third period pushed them to the win, before 3,744 at the Brandt Centre. Carson Lambos scored a pair for Winnipeg, with Michal Teply, Cole Muir and Isaac Johnson adding singles. Will Gurski made 19 saves. Regina goals were scored by Robbie Holmes and Austin Pratt, Danton Bulluk made 20 saves. Both teams went 2-for-4 on the power play.

Vancouver Giants 4, Kelowna Rockets 0

3,767 at the Langley Events Centre looked on as both Milos Roman and Justin Sourdif scored twice and David Tendeck had to stop just 14 shots in the Giants win. Cole Schwebius made 25 saves for Kelowna.

Kamloops Blazers 6, Vancouver Giants 2

4 goals in the third period won it for the Blazers. Orrin Centazzo led the way for the victors with 2 goals and 2 assists. Josh Pillar, Logan Stankoven, Zane Franklin and Montana Onyebuchi scored the other goals for Kamloops, Dylan Garand chipped in on the win with 33 saves. Vancouver's goal scorers were Tristen Nielsen and Milos Roman, Trent Miner made 20 saves. Attendance at Sandman Centre was 3,461.

Kelowna Rockets 5, Everett Silvertips 1

Kelowna scored 3 times in the second to grab the home ice win before 5,011 at Prospera Place. Jake Lee, Kyle Topping, Trevor Wong, Liam Kindree and Sean Comrie all scored their first goals of the season for the Rockets, Roman Basran had 26 saves. Jackson Berezowski scored the lone Everett goal, with Dustin Wolf and Keegan Karki combining for 28 saves.

Medicine Hat Tigers 10, Swift Current Broncos 1

The Tigers rolled to the win on the strength of a 6 goal second period, before 3,129 at Canalta Centre. James Hamblin and Bryan Lockner scored twice each for Medicine Hat, Cole Sillinger, Nick McCarry, Cole Clayton, Tyler Preziuso, Brett Kemp and Jonathan Brinkman scored the other Tiger goals. Garin Bjorklund made 32 saves. For Swift Current, Tyler Smithies scored, Isaac Poulter and Jordan Fairlie teamed up to make 31 saves.

Moose Jaw Warriors 3, Brandon Wheat Kings 2

Keen Taphorn scored just shy of the midway point of the third to tie the game for Moose Jaw, then Ryder Korczak scored with just 44 seconds to play to win it for the Warriors, who got a first period goal from Jadon Joseph and 31 saves from Bailey Brkin. For Brandon, Luca Burzan and Ben McCartney scored goals, Ethan Kruger made 28 saves. 3,073 looked on at Mosaic Place.

Prince Albert Raiders 3, Winnipeg ICE 2

Jeremy Masella scored at 2:02 of overtime, to give PA the win, before 2,586 at the Art Hauser Centre. Other Raiders goals came from Allaksel Protas and Ilya Usau, with Boston Bilous making 16 saves. For Winnipeg, goals were scored by Michael Milne and Austin Schellenberg, Gage Alexander made 21 saves.

Calgary Hitmen 5, Red Deer Rebels 1

Riley Stotts rang up a natural hat trick, Egor Zamula and Layne Toder chipped in with singles and Jack McNaughton had 15 saves to lead Calgary to the win, before 3,947 at Westerner Park Centrium. Dawson Barteaux scored the lone Red Deer goal, Byron Fancy made 28 saves.

Tri-City Americans 3, Spokane Chiefs 0

Beck Warm stopped all 38 shots he saw and the Americans got goals from Dom Schmiemann, Samuel Huo and Paycen Bjorklund, to beat the Chiefs in front of 8,122 at Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena. Lukas Parik made 20 saves for Spokane.

Victoria Royals 3, Prince George Cougars 2

Gary Haden scored in the 4th round of the shootout, to boost Victoria to the win, before 3,899 at Save-On-Foods Memorial Arena. Carson Miller scored late in regulation and in the 1st round of the shootout and Keanu Derungs scored in regulation as well for the Royals, with Shane Farkas making 25 saves. For Prince George, Ethan Browne scored both a regulation and shootout goal, Ryan Schoettler scored with 17 seconds left in the 3rd. Taylor Gauthier had 31 saves for the Cougars.

Western Hockey League roundup for Friday, September 27th, 2019













Moose Jaw Warriors 5, Brandon Wheat Kings 0

Bailey Brkin stopped all 22 shots he faced and Eric Alarie scored at 7:41 of the first to lead Moose Jaw to the win, before 3,451 at Westoba Place. Kaeden Taphorn, Keenan Taphorn, Tate Popple and Jadon Joseph also scored for the Warriors. Jiri Patera made 24 saves for Brandon.

Calgary 4, Edmonton 3 (OT)

Carson Focht scored 1:26 into the extra session to push the Hitmen to the win, in front of 5,137 at the Scotiabank Saddledome. Focht's goal at 10:55 of the third had forced the overtime. Other Calgary goals were scored by Josh Prokop and James Malm, who also assisted on Focht's game-winner. Jake Neighbors, Dylan Guenther and Josh Williams scored for Edmonton. In goal, Jack McNaughton made 21 saves for Calgary, Todd Scott 33 for Edmonton.

Kamloops 3, Kelowna 2 (OT)

Ryan Hughes scored twice, including the game winner at 2:42 of overtime on the power play, to give Kamloops their first win in four starts. Zane Franklin also scored for the Blazers, Dylan Garand made 18 saves for Kamloops. Dillon Hamaliuk and Kyle Topping scored for Kelowna, Roman Basran made 29 saves. Attendance was 4,461 at the Sandman Centre.

Red Deer 5, Lethbridge 2

Josh Trazwell scored three times to lead Red Deer before 3,677 at the Enmax Centre. Brett Davis and Dawson Barteaux also scored for Red Deer, Ethan Anders made 40 saves. For Lethbridge, Dylan Cozens and Calen Addison scored goals, Carl Tetachuk made 10 saves.

Prince Albert 5, Regina 2

A 2-0 Pats lead after one didn't hold, as Prince Albert scored twice in the second and three more times in the third to take the win, before 4,111 at the Brandt Centre. Raiders lighting the lamp were Brayden Watts with two, Cole Nagy, Evan Herman and Allaksel Protas with one each. Boston Bilous made 23 saves. Riley Krane scored a pair of first period goals for the Pats, Danton Belluk had 28 saves.

Winnipeg ICE 7, Saskatoon Blades 6

Saskatoon led 4-2 after one, but the ICE. Winnipeg's Nino Kinder scored three goals, Nolan Orzeck, James Form, Brad Ginnell and Michal Tepley also scored for the ICE, who scored six unanswered goals to power Winnipeg's attack. Dean McNabb made 23 saves for the ICE. For Saskatoon, Kyle Crnkovic had a hat trick, Scott Walfor 2 goals and as assist, Riley McKay a single, Nolan Maier 32 saves. Attendance was 3,187 at the SaskTel Centre.

Tri-City Americans 3, Seattle Thunderbirds 1

Sasha Mutala, Samuel Huo and Mutala again into an empty net with 1.4 seconds left gave the Ams the road win before 3,359 at Accesso ShoWare Center. Beck Warm made 31 saves, allowing just a mid third period goal to Seattle's Andrej Kukuca. Roddy Ross made 21 saves for the Thunderbirds.

Medicine Hat Tigers 2, Swift Current Broncos 0

25 saves by Mads Sogaard and goals by Tyler Prezluso and Bryan Lockner powered Medicine Hat to the road win, before 2,092 at Innovation Credit Union I-Plex. Isaac Poulter had 45 saves for Swift Current.

Portland Winterhawks 4, Vancouver Giants 2

With 4,088 looking on at the Langley Events Centre, it was Portland skating to the third straight win to open the season. Clay Hanus, Tyson Kozak, Lane Gillis and Kozak again scored the Winterhawks goals, Joel Hofer made 33 saves. For Vancouver, Milos Roman and Tristen Nielson scored goals, Trent Miner made 24 saves.

Victoria Royals 2, Prince George Cougars 1

A Keanu Derungs goal at 4:56 of the third period stood up as the winning goal for the Royals, in front of 5,697 at Save-On-Foods Memorial Arena. Matej Toman scored for the Cougars. In goal, Shane Farkas made 22 saves for Victoria, Taylor Gauthier 33 for Prince George, who fell to 0-3-0-0.

Everett's Bryce Kindopp leads the league in scoring. 3 goals and 3 assists in 2 games. Seth Bafaro of Vancouver is second with 5 points, on 2 goals and 3 assists.

Jake McGrew of Spokane, Jackson Shepard of Vancouver and Carson Denomie of Moose Jaw have all scored 3 goals in the early going. 

Ben McCartney of Brandon leads the WHL with 12 penalty minutes in 2 games. 

There have been two shutouts registered so far. Dustin Wolf in a 6-0 win over Victoria and Prince Albert's Boston Bilous 1-0 special over Saskatoon. Both goaltenders made 26 saves in their efforts and both came on September 21st.

Four goaltenders have a 1.00 goals against average. They are Seattle's Roddy Ross, Todd Scott of Edmonton, David Tendeck of Vancouver and Bryan Thompson of Lethbridge. Ross's .980 saves percentage is the league's best.

6,221. That's what Saskatoon drew in their home opener. It's the league's best so far. Portland's 2 home games last weekend against Tri-City and Kamloops (Both wins) drew a total of 11,

Edmonton sent Raaphael Pelletier to Swift Current for a 2020 4th round Bantam pick.
Kamloops traded Jerzy Orchard, a second round 2022 pick and a third round 2021 pick to Saskatoon for Ryan Hughes.
Edmonton traded their 4th round 2020 pick and 5th round pick in 2021 to Spokane for Etham McIndoe.
Prince Albert's 5th round Bantam pick in 2021 goes to Vancouver for Brayden Watts

Edmonton Oil Kings 4, Red Deer Rebels 1

Edmonton cruised to the home win Sunday afternoon before 5,870 at Rogers Place. Riley Sawchuk scored twice for the Oil Kings, Jesse Seppala and Liam Keeler once each, Todd Scott made 20 saves. Chris Douglas scored the Red Deer goal, Ethan Anders made 28 saves.

Portland Winterhawks 4, Kamloops Blazers 3

Robbie Fromm-Delorme scored early in the third to push Portland to the home win, before 4,507 at the Moda Center. Jaydon Dureau and Jake Gricius scored first period goals for Portland, Johnny Ludvig added a late second period goal for the Hawks. For Kamloops, goal scorers were Logan Stankoven, Montana Onyebuchi and Kobe Mohr. Joel Hofer stopped 30 or 33 shots for Portland, Blazers' goaltender Rayce Ramsay turned aside 28 of 32 shots faced.

Brandon Wheat Kings 4, Winnipeg Ice 2

The Wayne Fleming Arena was the scene for the WHL's return to Winnipeg, but it was the Brandon Wheat Kings, on the strength of a three-goal third period, who came away with the win. Ben McCartney scored for Brandon in the first, but the Ice grabbed the lead on first period goals by Michal Teply and Brad Ginnell. The Wheat Kings then got goals in the second from Luka Burzan at 49 seconds and again at 4:33, with Lynden McCallum adding an insurance goal at 17:06 of the third. Jiri Patera had 33 saves for Brandon, Dean McNabb 35 for Winnipeg. The two teams combined for 123 penalty minutes.

Moose Jaw Warriors 5, Regina Pats 3

Moose Jaw led 4-0 after two, then had to hold on for the win, before 4,008 at Mosaic Place. Carson Denomie scored twice for the Warriors, with the other goals coming from Ryder Korczak, Tate Popple and Keenan Taphorn. Pats goals were scored by Sloan Stanick, Riley Krane and Robbie Holmes. Bailey Brkin had 43 stops for the Warriors, Max Paddock 21 for Regina.

Portland Winterhawks 6, Tri-City Americans 1

Cross Hanas scored twice, Clay Hanas twice, Simon Knak and Johnny Ludvig once each, with Joel Hofer making 17 saves, to lead Portland to the 5 goal win, before 6,940 at the Moda Center. Jan Cikhart scored halfway through the third for Tri-City, Beck Warm and Talyn Boyko split the night in the Americans net, combining to make 42 saves.

Edmonton Oil Kings 4, Red Deer Rebels 2

Edmonton took the road win, in front of 4,522 at the Westerner Park Centrium. Scott Atkinson scored a pair for the Oil Kings, Josh Williams and David Kope one each and Dylan Myskiw made 27 saves. For the Rebels, Dallon Melin and Brett Davis scored goals, Ethan Anders made 28 saves.

Everett Silvertips 6, Victoria Royals 0

Dustin Wolf made 26 saves and  Bryce Kindopp scored twice and added two assists to lead Everett to the win before 4,420 at Angel of The Winds Arena. Wyatte Wylie scored twice, Max Patterson and Justyn Gurney once each. For Victoria, Shane Farkas and Brock Gould combined for 26 saves.

Kelowna Rockets 4, Spokane Chiefs 3 (OT)

Dillon Hamaliuk scored twice, including the game-winner with one second to go in overtime, to help the Rockets nudge their way past the Chiefs before 5,302 at Prospera Place. Kyle Topping and Kaedan Korczak also scored for Kelowna, with Roman Basran making 25 saves. For Spokane, Campbell Arnold made 30 saves, goals were scored by Jake McGrew, Michael King and Filip Kral.

Lethbridge Hurricanes 3, Medicine Hat Tigers 1

Alex Cotton, Noah Boyko and Oliver Okullar scored for Lethbridge, Ryan Chyzowski for Medicine Hat. Bryan Thomson made 32 saves in the Lethbridge net, Mats Sogaard 23 in the Tigers cage. 4,050 looked on in the Canalta Centre.

Vancouver Giants 4, Prince George Cougars 1

A three-goal first period powered Vancouver to the win, before 2,163 at the CN Centre. Jackson Shepard scored twice for the Giants, Seth Bafaro and Justin Sourdif once each, David Tendeck made 26 saves. The Cougars lone talley was notched by Mitchell Kohner, Tyler Brennan and Taylor Gauthier combined for 16 saves in the Prince George net.

Prince Albert Raiders 1, Saskatoon Blades 0

Cole Fonstad, assisted by Allaksel Protas scored at 12:02 of the third, pushing the Raiders past Saskatoon before 6,221 at the SaskTel Centre. Boston Bilous made 26 saves for Prince Albert, Nolan Maier 25 for Saskatoon.

Seattle Thunderbirds 4, Kamloops Blazers 1

Despite being outshot 51-34, the Thunderbirds skated to the win before 4,659 at the Accesso ShoWare Center. Jared Davidson, Andrej Kukuca and Alex Morozoff scored first period goals for the T-Birds, with Payton Mount adding another goal late in the third. The lone Kamloops goal was scored by Zane Franklin just 10 seconds into the third period. Roddy Ross made 50 saves for Seattle, Dylan Garand 30 for the Blazers.

Swift Current Broncos 3, Calgary Hitmen 2 (OT)

Joona Kiviniemi's power play goal, coming in the final second of free hockey, gave the Broncos the win before 2,185 at the Innovation Credit Union I-Plex. Carter Chorney scored in the first period and Ethan Regnier added a second period penalty shot goal for Swift Current. Carson Focht late in the first and Egor Zamula with 18 seconds left in regulation, scored for Calgary. Isaac Poulter had 34 saves for Swift Current, Carl Stankowski 19 for the Hitmen.

Western Hockey League roundup for Friday, September 20th, 2019













Winnipeg Ice 3, Brandon Wheat Kings 2

Second period goals by Connor McClennon and Issac Johnson, plus an early third period goal by Michal Teply powered Winnipeg to the road win before 4,959 at Brandon's Westoba Place. Vincent Iorio and Zach Wytinck scored for the Wheat Kings. Dean McNabb made 24 saves for the Ice, Jiri Patera 42 for Brandon.

Medicine Hat Tigers 4, Lethbridge Hurricanes 3 (SO)

D-Jay Jerome and Dino Kambeitz staked Lethbridge to a 2-0 lead, then Jacob Boucher made it a 3-1 lead early in the third with a short handed goal, but a second period power play by Cole Sillinger, combined with third period goals by Bryan Lockner and Ryan Chyzowski forced overtime. The Tigers outscored the Hurricanes 3-2 in the shootout for the season opening win, in front of 5,125 at the Enmax Centre. Mads Sogaard made 34 saves for Medicine Hat, Carl Tetachuk 48 for the Hurricanes.

Saskatoon Blades 3, Prince Albert Raiders 2 (OT)

Ryan Hughes scored 17 seconds in overtime to give the Blades the win before 3,108 at the Art Hauser Centre. Tristen Robins and Scott Walford added power play goals for the Blades, who got an 18 save performance in net by Nolan Maier. Boston Bilous made 15 saves for the Raiders, whose goals were scored by Allaksel Protas and Landon Kosler.

Regina Pats 3, Moose Jaw Warriors 2

Austin Pratt and Ty Kolle scored first period goals, then Kolle added the game-winner just past the midway point of the third, giving Regina the win in front of 4,658 at the Brandt Centre. Max Paddock had 20 saves for the Pats. For Moose Jaw, Keenan Taphorn and Carson Denomie scored power play goals, Bailey Brkin had 27 saves.

Spokane Chiefs 4, Kamloops Blazers 3

A 2 goal second period was the difference, as the Chiefs won before 5,654 at the Sandman Centre. Jake McGrew scored twice for Spokane, Connor Gabruch and Luke Toporowski one each, Lukas Parik had 31 saves. For the Blazers, Logan Stankoven, Sean Strange and Connor Zary scored goals, Dylan Garand made 33 saves.

Vancouver Giants 5, Prince George Cougars 3

Vancouver scored twice in the third to win in front of 2,857 at the CN Centre. Justin Sourdif and Jackson Shepard scored in the third, Lukas Svejkovsky in the second, Tristen Nielsen and Seth Bafaro in the first. Cougar goal scorers were Cole Moberg with one and Tyson Upper with two. Trent Miner made 20 saves for Vancouver, Taylor Gauthier 24 for Prince George.
