Just when you thought I forgot about you....

 ....I reappear. A lot has been going on in my life. My health still isn't the greatest. My feet hurt, my knees feel weak and overall, I don't move around a ballfield very well, but I do the best I can. The overwhelming number of people I work with are aware of my poor mobility and are glad to help out with coverage when needed. Unfortunately, one lousy judge of ability thinks he knows it all, when he clearly doesn't and has no clue how to assess/critique another person's game. Most coaches, players and spectators are good people, but some continue to act like chuckleheads and spoil things for a good many people. It's no surprise that a high percentage of young officials don't stick with it.

The hi-lite of my season, was working the plate May 21st for Senior Night at Rex Putnam High School in Milwaukie, the school I graduated from in 1973. Jeff Webber was my partner and we had a great time. Putnam won 3-0 in 1:23, their pitcher was throwing in the upper 80s and also twirled a no-hitter. Several friends were at the game too. That made it even more fun. Much more enjoyable than the next night in Philomath, which was a clear example of why young officials bail from the job after, on average, three years.

There I am, making sure that things are all ready before resuming play, as I have been since 1973. I enjoy what I do. Well, most of the time anyway.

My sweetheart, Dayle, continues to boost my spirits and make my life better on a daily basis. God was paying particularly close attention to His work the day He created her. I love Dayle very much and am looking forward to spending the rest of my life with her.

And, of course, my doggies Harmony and Morgan, plus my kitty Mittens, continue to boost my spirits on a daily basis. I love them. They had been staying at Dayle's house, but Mittens escaped through an open door and went missing for about a week. However, he was found and turned into the local humane society. His chip contained my address and that's how we were reunited. My bunny Spot, continues to be fostered by Dayle's sister, Dori. I am hopeful that Spot will join us soon.

In sports I had no direct involvement in, the Stinkin' Panthers won the Stanley Cup for the second straight year, while the Tampa Bay Rays got off to a slow start, then surged to near the top of the AL East. They are in a bit of a slump lately, but still in contention. Hopefully, discussions about the sale of the team will happen soon and a new deal for a new stadium can be worked out.

Catching Up

 Well, whatta ya know gang? Not a whole lot going on around here. Tonight, watching the news, working on my computer and hanging out with my bunny.

I had a busy week. Searching for an affordable health plan that covers hearing, catching up on important mail and trying to get on top of my health. My mental health sagged a touch, but thanks to some good outcomes, plus the love and happiness provided by the Meissner Zoo, life is looking better. As my priest likes to say, I am uncrushable.

One thing that didn't go as expected, is my access to veterans benefits. I spent 13 years in the Army Reserve, in the mid 70s to late 80s. I can't express my high level of disappointment when I learned that, because my service was entirely in the reserves, I get a DD256, instead of a DD214, a government issued document that shows when I served. A DD256 does not do that. So, any services, which require a DD214 as part of an application, I am instantly unqualified for. And, as I was told by an administrator at a local veterans services office, a DD256 is completely useless. There is a bias that has been present since the 1960s, that views anyone who voluntarily joined the Guard or Reserve before 1975, as a draft dodger. So, for those like me, who did not serve in the active military, thank you for your service and screw you very much. Something must be done about that, so veterans aren't continually denied life changing services.

The animals, Morgan, Harmony, Spot and Mittens, are doing well and are a great source of comfort and entertainment. And I also continue to get a great deal of enjoyment in watching the Tampa Bay Lightning on TV. Oh, musn't forget my overwhelming addiction to root beer popsicles. I recently turned 70 years old. And my wonderful and most beautiful fiance, Dayle, surprise me with perhaps the best present ever, a bright yellow 2004 Ford Mustang convertible. It's so wonderful to be behind the wheel of a Mustang again. It's the third one I've owned and the second convertible. (Bring on the sunshine!) It needs a radio installed, a new convertible top and a rattle underneath diagnosed and tended to. It is such fun to drive my Screaming Yellow Tweety Bird!

Speaking of Dayle, she is a remarkable woman. She serves others as a CNA and is devoted to her children, especially her 37 year old down syndrome son, Jason. She is beautiful, kind, sweet, very caring and I am most thankful for her. Dayle and I will marry sometime before the end of 2025, a day I am anticipating a great deal. I love my Dayle very much and I can't wait to be one with her.

Here's Morgan and Harmony at the back fence, looking for a bark fest with a neighbor dog. They are both miniature schnauzers, my favorite brand of dog. And they both come from Texas. Morgan is a 20 pounder and Harmony is 9 or 10 pounds, just like Stratty was. Harmony arrived December 6th and we bonded the instant we met at baggage claim at the Portland International Airport. She is my velcro dog. Morgan loves to chase his rubber chicken. He is a love bug too. 

Spot came from the Portland campus of the Oregon Humane Society in late 2022. She is a sweetheart and a cherished member of our family. Spot loves nose scritches, enjoys being held and being petted. Spot looks big, but in reality, weighs around 6 pounds. I love my Spotty Spot lots and lots!

Mittens the Kitten Meissner the 2nd came to us from the Salem Campus of the Oregon Humane Society on December 5th, the day before Harmony arrived from Texas. Mittens is pretty mellow, doesn't much like to be held, but enjoys being petted. The dogs chase him a lot, but Mittens, as expected, is too fast for them. Mittens is indeed my pretty kitty in the city! 

I thank God for my family. They bless me every single day!

Stop this nonsense!

 

Right now, it seems like the biggest item in the news these days, is the fires raging in Southern California. And that certainly isn't a surprise. Death, destruction, homelessness, etc, etc, etc. Regular people, ie: folks like you and I, are losing everything. And yes, celebrities, ie: those with lots and lots of money, are losing everything as well. While it may be easier for those people to recover, the losses are real and are traumatic. Yet, they face scorn and ridicule, because of their status. Stop it. Stop it now. JUST STOP!

The losses are real, and they don't check a person's bank statement before taking everything. My family suffered a residential fire this past July 8th. We lost most of our belongings, plus the life of a beloved family member. Fortunately, we had renter's insurance and were able to recover as best we could, and were able to set up in a new residence as best we could. But, the irreplaceable items, plus our beloved family member, leave a hole in our hearts that can never be repaired. A house fire has long been my greatest fear and this past July, this fear was realized. It was horrible indeed and I wouldn't wish such trauma on anyone.

Have some compassion, understanding and a willingness to help, if you can. Offer up prayers, good thoughts, or however you choose to offer support. It will be most appreciated by those who need it most. Thank you.

Good evening friends

 Good evening friends, how are you tonight? I'm just enjoying a quiet evening, playing with music files, watching my regular tv shows, Highway Patrol, MASH and Hogan's Heroes. Morgan is curled up on the couch, Harmony is in the chair with me.

I watched the Tampa Bay Lightning play the Boston Bruins earlier today. It's always a rough and tumble match-up when the play each other. It was also the first-ever meeting meeting between the Geekie brothers, Morgan for Boston and Conor for Tampa Bay. (Morgan is a former Tri-City American and I called a few of his games when I was doing fill-in for them. I named my schnauzer Morgan after him. Conor started last season with my old team in Wenatchee.) It was a close game throughout, but a couple of late empty net goals helped the Lightning snag a 4-1 win.

Today, I was able to take the doggos to a local dog park. Harmony can really run and so can Morgan. They got to play with a couple of other doggies too. Having my doggos, plus our cat Mittens and our rabbit Spot, really keeps me in better spirits than I would be otherwise. Harmony is getting better with her potty habits. Morgan still likes to chase Mittens the Kitten around the house. Spot stays in her hutch, out of the chaos. Yesterday, I took Spot with me to Petsmart and she wasn't interested in walking on a leash at all.

Last Friday, I had a revision surgery on my right big toe, after the surgery I had on August 2nd, didn't result in the expected level of healing. So, the surgeon removed all the hardware he put in in August and replaced it with a couple of screws. If it heals properly this time, then I can get the left foot done in early February. And if the left foot heals properly, I should be ready for the start of baseball season in March. It'll be nice to get back on the field.

And Friday, my fiance Dayle is coming over after work, so we can finally have Harmony's birthday party. I'm always happy to have Dayle come visit. She is indeed a sweetheart!

Hi, Tonight I'm sharing my chair with Spot the Bunny, watching hockey on TV. Morgan and Harmony, our miniature schnauzers, are flopped out on the couch. No idea where Mittens the Cat is.

I was in need of wheels, since USAA decided, pretty much against my expectations, to total my 2016 Audi A5, after it was found to have significant damage on the right side, that no one knew about. And, of course, gap insurance won't pay off, because the damage occurred before I bought the car. So, for right now, I am driving a 2001 PT Cruiser, until I can determine if buying back & repairing the Audi, will be worth it.

Health-wise, I'm a mess. But, hopefully, I'll get put back together in time for baseball season.

In the meantime, I'll just keep trying to put one foot in front of the other, until I'm told not to do that anymore. See ya soon.

Two goals in each of the last two periods and 20 saves from Koen MacInnes propelled Saskatoon to the win, before 2,763 at SaskTel Centre. Blades goals were scored by Zach Huber, who scored twice, Tristen Robins and Riley McKay. Adam Evanoff made 45 saves for Moose Jaw.

Brandon Wheat Kings 5, Edmonton Oil Kings 4 (SO)

Brandon let a 4-0 lead slip away, then rebounded to win on shootout goals by Ridly Greig and Luka Burzan. Cole Reinhardt scored twice in regulation for Brandon, Lynden McCallum and Ben McCartney also scored, Ethan Kruger made 30 saves. For Edmonton, David Kope, Vladimir Alistrov, Dylan Guenther and Loeden Schaufler scored in regulation, Guenther added a shootout goal and Todd Scott made 30 saves. Attendance was 6,375 at Rogers Place.

Prince Albert Raiders 5, Calgary Hitmen 4 (OT)

Ozzy Wiesblatt scored late in regulation to tie the game, then scored the winner at 1:12 of overtime for the Raiders, with 2,372 looking on at Art Hauser Centre. Brayden Watts also scored twice for Prince Albert and Kaiden Guhle once. Boston Bilous made 15 saves. For Calgary, Blake Allen, Riley Stotts, Adam Kydd and Josh Prokop scored, Brayden Peters made 22 saves.

Lethbridge Hurricanes 6, Vancouver Giants 0

Lethbridge won handily, before 3,744 at Langley Events Centre. Goal scorers for the Canes were Zack Stringer, Jett Jones, Dino Kambeitz, Oliver Okuliar, Logan Barlage and Noah Boyko. Carl Tetachuk picked up the shutout with 17 saves. For the Giants, Trent Miner made 34 saves.

Everett Silvertips 2, Spokane Chiefs 0

Wyatte Wylie scored a short handed goal in the 2nd period and Gianni Fairbrother added a 3rd period short handed empty netter with 37 seconds to pace the Everett offense and Dustin Wolf made 22 saves for his third shutout of the season, before 4,123 at Angel of The Winds Arena. Campbell Arnold was solid in goal for Spokane, stopping 25 of 26 shots faced.

Portland Winterhawks 4, Winnipeg ICE 1

3,102 were on hand at Veterans Memorial Coliseum to watch Portland beat the ICE Sunday. Jake Gricius scored twice for the Winterhawks, Kishaun Gervais and Reece Newkirk once each for the Hawks, Joel Hofer made 33 saves. For Winnipeg, Michal Teply scored, Jesse Makaj made 24 saves.

Regina Pats 4, Prince Albert Raiders 3 (SO)

The Pats let a 3-1 lead slip away, then recovered to win their third game of the season in a shootout, in front of 4,780 at Brandt Centre. After Kaiden Guhle staked the Raiders to a lead halfway through the first, the Pats responded with goals by Ty Kolle, Carter Chorney and Logan Nijhoff to take a 3-1 lead early in the 2nd. Prince Albert came back with a late 2nd period goal by Reece Vitelli and a goal at 6:39 of the 3rd from Aliaksel Protas, to tie the game and force overtime. After a scoreless extra session, the game progressed to the deciding shootout. The only goal was scored in round 1 by Ty Kolle, giving the Pats the win. Max Paddock had a big night in goal for Regina, making 33 saves. For the Raiders, Boston Bilous had 24 saves.

Calgary Hitmen 4, Saskatoon Blades 1

Calgary scored twice in each of the first two periods to win before 3,218 at SaskTel Centre. Mark Kastelic scored twice for Calgary, Luke Prokop and Hunter Campbell once, Jack McNaughton made 18 saves. Riley McKay scored for the Blades, Nolam Maier made 24 saves.

Seattle Thunderbirds 5, Portland Winterhawks 4 (SO)

Portland came from 3-1 down to force overtime, but Seattle would go on to the shootout win, with 5,554 looking on at Accesso Showare Center. Alex Morozoff, Connor Bruggen-Cate, Payton Mount and Keltie Jeri-Leon scored in regulation for Seattle, Mount and Simon Kubicek scored in the shootout for the Thunderbirds, who also got 47 saves from Roddy Ross. For Portland, goal scorers were Johnny Ludvig, James Stefan, Jaydon Dureau and Gabe Klassen, Isaiah DiLaura made 23 saves, including stopping a penalty shot by Henrik Rybinski with 24 seconds left in overtime.

Swift Current Broncos 7, Moose Jaw Warriors 3

A 4-goal 2nd period propelled Swift Current to the win,before 1,983 at Innovation Credit Union I-Plex. Jaxan Kaluski lead the Broncos with 2 goals and 2 assists, Sergei Alkhimov, Matthew Culling, Brecon Wood and Ethan Regnier had a goal and assist each, Aiden Bulych scored a goal, Isaac Poulter had 21 saves. For Moose Jaw, Ryder Korczak tallied a goal and 2 assists, Brayden Tracey had a goal and an assist, Owen Hardy a goal, with Jackson Berry and Adam Evanoff combining for 38 saves.

Red Deer Rebels 4, Brandon Wheat Kings 3

Red Deer's 3 goal 1st period was the difference, with 3,794 watching at Westerner Park Centrium. Arshdeep Bains, Dawson Barteaux, Ethan Rowland and Josh Trazwell scored for the Rebels, Byron Fancy had 37 stops. For Brandon, Cole Reonhardt scored twice, Ben McCartney once, Jiri Patera made 21 saves.

Winnipeg's Chase Hartje scored at 39 seconds of overtime to boost the ICE to the win, in front of 7,017 at Angel of The Winds Arena. Other Winnipeg goals were scored by Cole Muir, Logan Danis, Jackson Leppard and Nino Kinderm who forced the OT by scoring with 41 seconds left in regulation. Jesse Makaj made 23 saves. For Everett, Jackson Berezowski, Max Patterson, Brendan Lee and Michal Gut scored, Keegan Karki made 30 saves.

Vancouver Giants 4, Prince George Cougars 0

Alex Swetlikoff scored at 13:46 of the 3rd to propel Kelowna to the win, before 5,613 at Prospera Place. Other goal scorers for the Rockets were Jake Poole, Dillon Hamaliuk and Kyle Crosbie. Spokane won for the second straight night on the road, thanks to a pair of goals by Adam Beckman, with singles added by Bear Hughes and Cordel Larson, with Lukas Parik making 29 saves. Medicine Hat Tigers 4, Red Deer Rebels 3 (SO)

4,010 at the Westerner Park Centrium were treated to extra hockey Friday night, with the Tigers grabbing the extra standings point by winning a four round shootout. Brett Kemp opened the scoring for Medicine Hat early in the 2nd period, but then the Rebels offense fired up and grabbed the lead with goals by Ben King, Jaxsen Wiebe and Josh Tarzwell. Corson Hopwell scored for Medicine Hat late in the 2nd, then Nick McCarry's goal for the Tigers with 6:32 left in regulation tied the contest.After a scoreless overtime, King scored for Red Deer in the first round of the shootout to put the Rebels on top. Medicine Hat responded with goals in round 3 by Cole Sillinger and in round 4 by Jonathan Brinkman to take the win. Goaltending was solid on both sides, with Garin Bjorklund making 29 saves for Medicine Hat and Ethan Anders making 27 saves for Red Deer.

Kamloops Blazers 1, Prince George Cougars 0

Matthew Seminoff's goal 38 seconds into the 3rd period and Rayce Ramsay's 23 saves led Kamloops to the win, before 5,416 at the Sandman Centre. Taylor Gauthier made 43 saves for the Cougars. A hooking penalty to Prince George's Ryan Schoettler at 2:03 of the 1st was the only penalty called in the entire game.

Spokane Chiefs 4, Portland Winterhawks 3 (OT)

Jack Finley's goal at 18:43 of the 3rd forced overtime, then his second goal at 4:05 of overtime won it for the Chiefs won it, in front of 6,213 at Moda Center. Erik Atchison and Eli Zummack also scored for Spokane, Lukas Parik made 36 saves. For Portland, Jonas Brondberg, Kishaun Gervais and Lane Gilliss scored goals and Joel Hofer made 22 saves.

Victoria Royals 3, Lethbridge Hurricanes 2

1st period goals by Ty Yoder and power play markers by Kaid Oliver and Gary Haden put Victoria on top Friday night, with 5,598 looking on at Save-On-Foods Memorial Arena. Lethbridge rallied in the 3rd, with goals by Dylan Cozens on the power play at 57 seconds and Cozens again at 19:15, but were unable to come up with the equalizer. Shane Farkas made 38 saves for the Royals, Bryan Thompson made 23 saves for the Hurricanes.

Four of the five second period Wheat King goals, preceeded by a Cole Reinhardt marker, came in a span of 6:23, scored by Ty Thorpe. Braden Schneider, Ridly Greig and Jonny Hooker. Connor Gutenberg and Chad Nychuk added 3rd period goals for Brandon, who won for the 9th time in 21 starts. Jiri Patera had a solid night in goal, making 23 saves. Beck Warm was outstanding Monday afternoon, stopping all 48 shots thrown his way, as the Ams improved to 3-0 on their swing through the Central Division, in front of a Rogers Place crowd of 7,009. Connor Bouchard had a goal and 2 assists for Tri-City, Paycen Bjorklund had a goal as did Krystof Hrabik, Kyle Olson had 2 assists and the Americans went 2-for-4 on the power play. A 3-goal 2nd period propelled Kamloops to the home win, in front of 4,625 at Sandman Centre. For the Blazers, Orrin Centazzo scored a pair of goals, Matthew Seminoff, Connor Zary and Ryley Appelt scored the other goals, while Dylan Garand made 25 saves. 3rd period goals by Nino Kinder and Michael Milne powered Winnipeg to the win, with 1,529 in attendance at Wayne Fleming Arena. Isaac Johnson scored twice for the ICE, Milne had a 2nd period goal as well for Winnipeg, Dean McNabb made 30 saves. For Regina, Carter Massler scored twice, Drew Englot and Ty Kolle once each, Max Paddock had 33 saves.

Edmonton Oil Kings 4, Calgary Hitmen 2

Josh Williams scored twice for Edmonton, Ethan Cap and Jake Neighbours once each and Todd Scott made 13 saves to lead the Oil Kings to victory, in front of 7,004 at Rogers Place. Mark Kastelic and Jonas Peterek scored for Calgary, Brayden Peters made 35 stops.

Tri-City Americans 3, Lethbridge Hurricanes 2

The Americans grabbed their second win in as many outing on their swing through the Central Division Saturday night, before 3,891 at Enmax Centre. Kyle Olson, Edge Lambert and Sasha Mutala were the Tri-City goal scorers, Talyn Boyko made 47 saves. For Lethbridge, D-Jay Jerome and Alex Cotton scored goals, Bryan Thomson and Carl Tetachuk combined to make 13 saves.

Portland Winterhawks 2, Vancouver Giants 1 (SO)

Jack O'Brien scored in the 2nd period for Portland, then Jayden Dureau, Cross Hanas and Mason Mannek notched tallies in a 9-round shootout to lead the Winterhawks in the second half of a home-and-home, before 8,026 at the Moda Center. The Giants had a regulation goal by Justin Sourdif, shootout goals from Bowen Byram and Tristen Nielsen and 27 saves from Trent Miner. Portland goaltender Joel Hofer made 30 saves. 

Everett Silvertips 4, Seattle Thunderbirds 2

A 2 goal 2nd period was the difference in Everett's win, before 5,054 at Accesso ShoWare Center. Dawson Butt, Conrad Mitchell, Martin Fasko-Rudas and Wyatte Wylie scored for the Silvertips, Keegan Karki made 36 saves. For Seattle, Tyrel Bauer and Matthew Rempe scored, Roddy Ross had 34 saves. The teams combined for 120 penalty minutes.

Kamloops Blazers 7, Medicine Hat Tigers 3

Kamloops came out firing, scoring 4 times in the 1st period, with 4,833 at Sandman Centre. For the Blazers, Zane Franklin and Ryan Hughes had 2 goals and 1 assist each, Connor Zary scored twice, Kyrell Sopotyk once, Max Martin had 3 assists, with Sean Strange and Orrin Centazzo adding a pair of assists each. Dylan Garand made 37 saves. Jonathan Brinkman, James Hamblin and Tyler Prezluso scored the Medicine Hat goals, Mads Sogaard and Garin Bjorklund combined to make 33 saves.

Victoria Royals 2, Prince George Cougars 1

Kaid Oliver scored in the 2nd period and Sean Gulka in the 3rd, to push Victoria past the Cougars, with 3,051 looking on at CN Centre. Shane Farkas made 15 stops. For Prince George, Josh Maser scored and Taylor Gauthier made 16 saves. Prince George drew 3 minor penalties in the contest, Victoria none.

Spokane Chiefs 6, Kelowna Rockets 1

After Mark Liwiski scored to give Kelowna an early lead, Spokane rattled of 6 straight to win going away, in front of 6,276 at Spokane Veteran's Memorial Arena. Chiefs goal scorers included Luke Toporowki, Filip Kral, Jack Finley, Bobby Russell, Noah King and Bear Hughes. In goal, Lukas Parik had 22 saves for Spokane, Cole Schwebius made 49 saves for Kelowna. The two teams combined for 150 penalty minutes.

Moose Jaw Warriors 3, Winnipeg ICE 2

Goals by Carson Denomie, Alek Sukunda and Cory King were enough for Moose Jaw to best the ICE before 3,037 at Mosaic Place. Michal Teply and Connor McClennon scored for Winnipeg. In net, Adam Evanoff made 36 saves for Moose Jaw, Jessee Makaj had 24 saves for the ICE.

Tri-City Americans 4, Calgary Hitmen 3 (SO)

Connor Bouchard's goal with 22 seconds remaining in regulation forced overtime, then the Americans took the extra standings point by besting Calgary in the shootout 1-0. Kyle Olson and Nick Bowman also scored for Tri-City and Bouchard scored the lone shootout goal, Beck Warm had 46 saves. For the Hitmen, Egor Zamula, Mark Kastelic and former American Carson Focht scored goals, Jack McNaughton made 35 saves. Ateendance at Scotiabank Saddledome was 6,970.

Prince Albert Raiders 6, Brandon Wheat Kings 3

Two big periods for the Raiders Friday night, scoring 4 in the 1st and 2 more in the 3rd to win with 2,715 looking on at Art Hauser Centre. Zack Hayes had a goal and an assist for Prince Albert as did Jakob Brook and Eric Pearce, with Ozzy Wiesblatt, Evan Herman and Brayden Watts. Boston Bilous grabbed the win, making 19 saves. For the Wheat Kings, Luka Burzan scored twice, Nolan Ritchie once and Ethan Kruger and Jiri Patera teaming up for 15 saves.

A 2 goal 2nd period pushed the Blades to the win, before 3,330 at SaskTel Centre. Radek Kucerik, Kyle Crnkovic and Eric Florchuk scored for the Blades, Nolan Maier made 28 saves. For the Raiders, Dallon Melin scored, Byron Fancy had 20 saves.

Lethbridge Hurricanes 4, Edmonton Oil Kings 3 (SO)

A 3 goal 3rd period forced extra hockey, then Lethbridge prevailed 1-0 in the shootout for the extra standings point. 3,696 watched at Enmax Centre, as the Canes came from 3-0 down, on goals by Oliver Okuliar, Dylan Cozens and Alex Cotton scored in the 3rd period, the D-Jay Jerome scored in the 4th round of the shootout. Both teams scored twice in the 3rd period, then Kaid Oliver and Tarun Fizer scored shootout goals to hand Victoria the extra standings point, in front of 2,048 at CN Centre. Oliver and Phillip Schultz scored regulation goals for the Royals, Brock Gould made 20 stops. For the Cougars, Josh Maser and Connor Bowie scored regulation goals, Ethan Browne tallied a shootout marker and Taylor Gautheir made 22 saves.

Medicine Hat Tigers 8, Kelowna Rockets 5

In one of those last guy who scores, turn out the lights affairs, Medicine Hat scored 3 goals in each of the final two periods to grab the win, before 5,223 at Prospera Place. Jonathan Brinkman, Tyler Preziuso and Jonathan Brinkman led the Tigers attack with a goal and 2 assists each.
