Team USA Advances to Fifth-Place Game Tomorrow (Feb. 5)

ERZURUM, Turkey – Paced by shorthanded goals from Michael Lepre (Chesterland, Ohio/Kent State University) and Devin Sheehan (Binghamton, N.Y./University of Rhode Island), the U.S. Men's National University Team topped Japan, 5-3, at the 2011 Winter World University Games. Eleven players recorded a point for Team USA, which advances to the fifth-place game against Slovakia tomorrow (Feb. 5) at 1 p.m. EST.

"This is a huge win for us, especially since Japan has beaten us at the last two tournaments," said Dave Debol, head coach of the U.S. Men's National University Team. "We've accomplished our goal of placing higher than we ever have before at this tournament and earning fifth place would be a great honor."

Team USA opened the scoring 6:39 into the first period, when Lepre notched a shorthanded tally. Augie Hoffmann (Lake Forest, Ill./University of Oklahoma) sent a feed to Lepre, who skated up ice on a breakaway and fired a shot from the top of the faceoff circle that beat Japanese goaltender Yuta Narisawa.

Japan tied the game at the 10:45 mark of the second period, but the U.S. gained a 2-1 edge less than five minutes later with a goal by Alan Dionne (North Scituate, R.I./University of Rhode Island).

Tim O'Brien (Bethel Park, Pa./Penn State University) then scored with just :38 remaining in the middle frame to give Team USA a two-goal cushion heading into the third period.

The U.S. took a 4-1 lead 4:38 into the third period when Sheehan scored Team USA's second shorthanded goal of the game. Japan scored twice to cut the U.S. lead to 4-3, but Kevin Kranker (Lake Orion, Mich./Oakland University) notched a power-play goal to secure the 5-3 victory.

Team USA goaltender Erik Hudson (Spokane, Wash./Iowa State University) made 36 saves in the win, while Narisawa stopped 29 shots for Japan.

U.S. Women's National University Team Falls to Canada, 8-1, at 2011 Winter World University Games

Team USA to Play in Bronze-Medal Game Tomorrow (Feb. 4)

ERZURUM, Turkey – The U.S. Women's National University Team fell to Canada, 8-1, here today at the 2011 Winter World University Games. The U.S., which is competing in the women's tournament for the first time, will play in the bronze-medal game against Slovakia tomorrow (Feb. 5) at 2:30 a.m. EST.

After Canada took a 2-0 lead at the 12:46 mark of the first period, the U.S. responded with a goal to cut its deficit in half. Team USA led a rush into the offensive zone and Lindsay Reihl (Cheshire, Conn./Penn State University) fed the puck to Charlotte Hoium (Falcon Heights, Minn./Michigan State University), who sent a shot past Canadian goaltender Liz Knox.

Canada scored just :55 into the middle frame and notched two more goals to take a 5-1 lead into the third period.

Team USA killed four penalties in the final frame, but Canada scored three unanswered goals to seal the victory.

Goaltender Heather Rossi (Effort, Pa./Penn State University) made 48 saves for the U.S., while Knox and Beth Clause stopped six shots for Canada.

NOTES: The 2011 Winter World University Games marks the first time the U.S. is sending a women's team after women's ice hockey was added to the tournament in 2009. National Team Development Program Weekly Update

U.S. Nat'l Under-18 Team Defeats Cedar Rapids and Green Bay; NTDP Teams a Combined 8-1-1 in Last 10 USHL Games

THIS WEEK: The U.S. National Under-18 Team hosts the Tri-City Storm tonight (Feb. 3) in its final game before the 2011 Five Nations tournament, which will take place Feb. 9-13 in Hradec Kralove, Czech Republic. Puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m. ET at the Ann Arbor (Mich.) Ice Cube.

The U.S. National Under-17 Team returns to action as it visits the Chicago Steel on Friday (Feb. 4) at 8:30 p.m. ET, at The Edge Ice Arena in Bensenville, Ill. Following its game, the Under-17 Team will prepare for the 2011 Vlad Dzurilla tournament, whic will take place Feb. 11-13 in Piestany, Slovakia.

U18 TEAM SCORES IN OVERTIME, BEATS CEDAR RAPIDS: J.T. Miller (East Palestine, Ohio) netted two goals, including the game-winner in overtime, and added one assist as the Under-18 Team came from behind to defeat the RoughRiders, 5-4, at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena last Friday (Jan. 28).

U18 TEAM DEFEATS GREEN BAY, 2-1: Adam Reid (Chino Hills, Calif.) scored once and assisted on the game-winning goal and John Gibson (Pittsburgh, Pa.) turned aside 30 shots, as the U.S. National Under-18 Team defeated the Green Bay Gamblers, 2-1, at the Resch Center last Saturday (Jan. 29).

NTDP ALUMNI UPDATE: Chicago Blackhawks forward Patrick Kane (Buffalo, N.Y./2004-06) notched an assist in the 2011 National Hockey League All-Star Game last weekend as Team Lidstrom defeated Team Staal, 11-10 ... Western Michigan University's Chase Balisy (Fullerton, Calif./2008-10) recently earned Central Collegiate Hockey Association Offensive Player of the Week honors after being named Rookie of the Week in early January for his play in WMU's series against Ohio State. The accolades continue to pile up as Balisy was named CCHA Rookie of the Month ... University of Michigan freshman Jon Merill (Brighton, Mich./2008-10) is tied for first in points among Wolverine defensemen with 17 ... Team USA Next Faces Japan Tomorrow (Feb. 4)

ERZURUM, Turkey – The U.S. Men's National University Team erased a two-goal deficit midway through the second period, but eventually fell to Belarus, 6-3, in the quarterfinals of the 2011 Winter World University Games. The U.S. will face Japan tomorrow (Feb. 4) at 8 a.m. EST in the classification round.

"I'm very proud of every player on the team," said Dave Debol, head coach of the U.S. Men's National University Team. "I loved the effort, especially when we were down, 3-1. We never quit and came back to tie the game, but we just fell a little short today."

Belarus took an early 1-0 lead, but Team USA tied the score 12:22 into the first period. Bob Collar (Brighton, Mich./Davenport University) sent a feed to Michael Macari (Dearborn Heights, Mich./University of Michigan Dearborn), who fired a shot past Belarus goalie Stepan Goryachevskikh.

Belarus took a 3-1 second period lead, but the U.S. responded with two goals 1:19 apart to tie the game. Alan Dionne (North Scituate, R.I./University of Rhode Island) scored at the 10:17 mark and Tim O'Brien (Bethel Park, Pa./Penn State University) followed with a power-play goal to even the score heading into the final frame.

Belarus gained the 4-3 edge just 53 seconds into the third period and added two late goals to secure the 6-3 victory.

Team USA goaltender Dan Pyne (Warrington, Pa./Drexel University) made 27 saves in the loss, while Goryachevskikh and Vitali Bialinksi combined to stop 22 shots in the win.

U.S. Women's National University Team Earns 8-1 Win over Great Britain at 2011 Winter World University Games
Team USA Advances to Semifinal Round on Friday

ERZURUM, Turkey – Ramey Weaver (Eagle River, Alaska/Robert Morris University Illinois) scored the game-winning goal and collected an assist, as the U.S. Women's National University Team earned an 8-1 win over Great Britain here today at the 2011 Winter World University Games. With the victory, the U.S. improved to 2-0-0-3 (W-OTW-OTL-L) and advanced to the semifinal round on Friday (Feb. 4).

"It looked like we had more jump in our step today, so we're back on track and feeling great," said Mo Stroemel, head coach of the 2011 U.S. Women's National University Team. "We'll relish this for a little while and then get ready for the next game."

Team USA opened the scoring just 46 seconds into the first period while on the power play. Weaver passed the puck to Megan Winters (Basking Ridge, N.J./Northeastern University), who fired a slap shot from the high slot that beat Great Britain goalie Laura Saunders for the early lead.

Midway through the opening frame, Weaver scored the eventual game-winning goal on a feed from Ashley Rumsey (West Olive, Mich./Grand Valley State University).

Great Britain scored early in the second period, but Team USA responded with two quick goals just 39 seconds apart to gain a 4-1 advantage. Following a Shea Crawford (Selbyville, Del./Lindenwood University) 4-on-4 tally, Rumsey notched her second goal of the game off a rebound after Allysson Arcibal's (Vista, Calif./Lindenwood University) initial shot was blocked away by Saunders.

Just over three minutes later, Terra Payne (Gaylord, Mich./Michigan State University) extended the U.S. lead to 5-1 heading into the final frame.

Charlotte Hoium (Falcon Heights, Minn./Michigan State University) notched a a power-play goal early in the third period and Christina Young (Stafford, Va./Michigan State University) followed with a goal 48 seconds later off a slap shot from the point to put Team USA ahead, 7-1.

Sarah Jensen (Albert Lea, Minn./South Dakota State University) finished off the scoring with just under six minutes remaining in regulation.

Katie Vaughan (South Park, Pa./Penn State University) made 11 saves in the win for the U.S., while Saunders stopped 43 shots in the loss for Great Britain.

NOTES: Team USA's semifinal opponent will be determined later today ... The U.S. outshot Great Britain, 51-12 ... University of Wisconsin Remains No. 1 in USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Women's College Hockey Poll

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The University of Wisconsin remains No. 1 in this week's USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Women's College Hockey Poll after posting a 1-0-1 record against No. 5 University of Minnesota last weekend. The Badgers, who boast a 24-2-2 record, accumulated 180 points and 11 first-place votes to earn the top spot for the fifth week in a row.

Cornell University sits at No. 2 with 179 points and eight first-place votes after defeating Union College and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, while Boston University remains at No. 3 with 152 points following a weekend sweep of the University of Connecticut. Mercyhurst College (129) is No. 4 after twice defeating Niagara University, while the University of Minnesota (117) rounds out the top five.

Harvard University returns to the poll for the first time in 10 weeks at No. 10, following wins over Brown University and Yale University.

This weekend features one top-10 match-up, with No. 7 Boston College traveling to No. 9 Providence College on Sunday (Feb. 6).

NOTES: The Western Collegiate Hockey Association leads all conferences with four ranked programs, while Hockey East boasts three, ECAC Hockey has two ranked teams and College Hockey America has one ... A total of 14 teams received votes.

U.S. Men's National University Team Tops Spain, 4-1, at 2011 Winter World University Games

Team USA Advances to Quarterfinal Round Thursday

ERZURUM, Turkey – Alan Dionne (North Scituate, R.I./University of Rhode Island) scored the game-winning goal in the third period, as the U.S. Men's National University Team topped Spain, 4-1, here today in its final preliminary-round game of the 2011 Winter World University Games. With the win, Team USA improved to 2-0-0-1 (W-OTW-OTL-L) and advanced to the quarterfinal round on Thursday (Feb. 3).

"When the game was scoreless after two periods, we just kept pressing and, sure enough, the puck started going in for us," said Dave Debol, head coach of the U.S. Men's National University Team. "If you stick to your gameplan, sooner or later you are going to get opportunities."

The game remained scoreless through the first period, as Team USA killed off a 5-on-3 power-play opportunity for Spain. The U.S. then outshot Spain in the middle frame, 19-3, but the game remained tied, 0-0, after two.

Team USA opened the scoring 2:47 into the third period, when Devin Sheehan (Binghamton, N.Y./University of Rhode Island) tipped a shot from Dan Lassik (Garnet Valley, Pa./University of Rhode Island) into the net on the right side.

Spain tied the game at the 3:51 mark, but the U.S. answered with a goal just 15 seconds later to gain a 2-1 edge. Dionne fired a shot from the top of the left faceoff circle that beat Spanish goaltender Ander Alcaine for the eventual game-winner.

Four minutes after, Bob Collar (Brighton, Mich./Davenport University) extended Team USA's lead to 3-1, when he stickhandled at the top of the crease and pushed the puck past Alcaine.

Kyle Krannich (Randolph, N.J./University of Rhode Island) then scored off a backhanded shot from the right side with 7:22 remaining in regulation to secure the U.S. victory.

Team USA goaltender Dan Pyne (Warrington, Pa./Drexel University) made 15 saves in the win, while Spanish goalie Alcaine Val stopped 49 shots in the loss.

NOTES: The U.S. outshot Spain, 53-16 ... Michael Macari (Dearborn Heights, Mich./University of Michigan Dearborn) leads the U.S. with four points (2-2) through three games and Kyle Krannich ranks second on the team with three points (2-1). Macari, Krannich and Bob Collar are all tied in scoring with two goals each ... The 2011 Winter World University Games features the U.S. Men's National University Team competing in Pool C alongside Kazakhstan, Slovakia and Spain. The Czech Republic, Japan, Russia and Turkey comprise Pool A, while Belarus, Canada, Slovenia and South Korea comprise Pool B. Boston College New No. 1 in USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Men's College Hockey Poll

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Boston College is the new No. 1 in this week's USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Men's College Hockey Poll after defeating the University of Massachusetts Lowell last weekend. The Eagles, who boast a 18-6-0 record, collected 497 points and 26 first-place votes to return to the top spot for the first time in 14 weeks.

Yale University claims the No. 2 spot with 448 points and three first-place votes following losses to then-No. 12 Union College and then-No. 10 Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, while the idle University of Denver sits at No. 3 with 445 points and two first-place votes. Idle University of Minnesota Duluth is No. 4 with 407 points and three first-place votes, while the University of North Dakota (393) rounds out the top five after splitting a weekend series with Colorado College.

Boston University returns to the poll at No. 14 after earning a win and tie against then-No. 11 University of Maine.

This weekend features two top-15 weekend series, with No. 9 University of Michigan traveling to No. 13 Miami University and No. 6 University of New Hampshire hosting No. 15 University of Maine.

NOTES: Hockey East leads all conferences with five ranked teams, while the Western Collegiate Hockey Association boasts four ranked programs, and the Central Collegiate Hockey Association and ECAC Hockey each have three ... A total of 20 teams received votes.
