Fifty-Seven American Prospects Chosen at 2013 NHL Entry Draft

Nineteen Players Picked in First Three Rounds

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Fifty-seven American players were selected during the 2013 National Hockey League Entry Draft in Newark, N.J., yesterday, two more than the 55 taken in the NHL Entry Draft a year ago. The first American taken was highly touted defenseman Seth Jones (Plano, Texas), who went to the Nashville Predators with the fourth overall pick. Jones won a gold medal with the 2013 U.S. National Junior Team and spent two seasons at USA Hockey's National Team Development Program (2010-12), a member of the United States Hockey League. Two other Americans were taken in the first round including Michael McCarron (Macomb, Mich.), who went 25th overall to the Montreal Canadiens, and Ryan Hartman (West Dundee, Ill.), who was picked 30th overall by the Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks. McCarron played the last two seasons with the NTDP. Hartman, who joined Jones as a gold medalist on the 2013 U.S. National Junior Team, also played two seasons with the NTDP (2010-12). USA Hockey's junior ranks had a strong showing at the NHL Draft. Among the highlights were 38 American players chosen that have ties to the United States Hockey League, USA Hockey's only Tier I junior league; five players with connections to the Tier II North American Hockey League; and six players with a background in the Eastern Junior Hockey League. On Sunday a helicopter made an emergency landing in the Hudson River, near Manhattan after losing engine power in the air. It was carrying a family visiting New York City from Sweden, two adults and two teen. They were unhurt. The pilot was a 22-year-old by the name of Michael Campbell.
