The Calgary Stampeders posted 21 points in the 4th quarter last night, blowing open a close game and knocking the Saskatchewan Roughriders from the ranks of the unbeaten, with a 40-20 win at McMahon Stadium in Calgary.
The Stamps took the lead just past the midway point of the opening quarter, as Henry Burris found P.K. Sam in the right corner of the endzone, capping a 7 play, 56 yard drive with an 8 yard touchdown pass. Rob Maver converted, putting Calgary up 7-0 with 6:34 left in the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the Roughrider defense stiffened and the offense started moving the ball. On their first possession of the second, the Riders moved from their own 25 to the Stampeders' 16, keyed by a juggling catch at the 16 by Prechae Rodriguez, Wes Cates went right on the next play, running it in from 16 yards out for the major score, capping a 6 play, 76 yard drive. Luca Congi converted with 11:34 to go in the half, tying the game 7-7. Calgary threatened twice, but James Patrick came up with two endzone interceptions to keep the Stamps off the board. Saskatchewan had one good shot at points, by a 43 yard field goal attempt by Congi hit the right upright and fell to the turf. The two teams kept bumping heads the rest of the quarter, but neither team seriously threatened and the first half ended in a 7-7 tie.
Calgary opened second half scoring with a Burris to Romby Bryant hook up for a 63 yard touchdown. Maver's convert with 12:23 left put the Stampeders up 14-7. The Riders made it 14-10 on a Congi 22 yard field goal with 10:30 left in the third. Maver responded with a 21 yard field goal with 6:29 left for Calgary, then the Riders' Eddie Johnson conceded a safety touch with 1:00 remaining on the board, pushing the Stampeder lead to 19-10 through three quarter time.
Calgary blew the game open with two major scores in the fourth. After a 50 yard run by Jon Cornish took the ball down to the Saskatchewan 10, Bryant took a swing pass on the next play, broke two tackles and scored. Maver's convert with 12:08 to go put the Stampeder lead at 26-10. Then, after a Dion Raymond interception, Calgary went 40 yards in 3 plays, ending with a Joffrey Reynolds 6 yard touchdown run. Maver converted again and the Stamp's lead was 33-10, with 9:34 remaining in regulation time. Congi missed a 46 yard field goal, but got a point when Calgary conceded the single, putting the Stampeders' lead at 14, 33-11 with 6:17 to go. It was 40-10 Calgary when Nik Lewis caught an 8 yard pass from Burris, with Maver tacking on the convert with 3:12 to go. The Stamps' Burke Dales conceded a safety touch with 1:38 left, making it 40-13. The Riders put one more major on the board with 1:07 left, when Darian Durant passed to Weston Dressler for a 26 yard touchdown. Congi's convert with 1:07 left wrapped up the scoring, with Calgary winning 40-20.
Henry Burris led the Stampeders with 33-of-33 passing for 285 yards, 4 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. Romby Bryant caught 7 balls for 116 yards and 2 touchdowns, P.K. Sam and Nik Lewis caught a touchdown pace each, Joffrey Reynolds ran for a touchdown and Rob Maver kicked one field goal and 5 converts. For Saskatchewan, Darian Durant was 22-of-37 passing for 354 yards, 1 touchdown and 3 interceptions, Weston Dressler caught 9 passes for 125 yards and a touchdown, Wes Cates rushed 16 times for 83 yards and a touchdown, and Luca Congi kicked 1 field goal, 2 converts and a single. The Riders had 443 yards total offense, allowed 2 sacks and turned the ball over 4 times. Calgary had 514 yards total offense, allowed 1 sack and turned the ball over 3 times. Saskatchewan was penalized 8 times for 85 yards, the Stampeders 7 times for 66 yards.
Saskatchewan slips to 3-1 and is now tied for first in the CFL West with Calgary, who improves to 3-1. The Riders return home to host the 1-3 Hamilton TigerCats on Saturday, July 31st, with kickoff set for 6:30pm EDT on 620 CKRM, the Rider Radio Network and 620ckrm.com. The Stampeders host Winnipeg on Saturday, July 31st, beginning at 9:30pm EDT.

With solid pitching from David Price, the Rays were able to escape an early hole to break an 18-game losing streak in Cleveland, as Tampa Bay beat the Indians 7-4.
Cleveland scored their first run in the first, when Trevor Crowe scored on a one-out double by Shin-Soo Choo. They made it 3-0 in the second, on a two-run homer by Shelley Duncan that also brought home Matt LaPorta, giving the Tribe a 3-0 lead. The Rays began their comeback in the fifth. With two outs, Ben Zobrist hit a ball to center that scored Kelly Shoppach and Jason Bartlett on what was originally ruled a triple. But, after taking a look at the video, Zobrist was awarded a home run, and the game was tied 3-3. Tampa Bay took the lead with 2 in the sixth. Carlos Pena hit a one out homer, and Matt Joyce scored with two outs when B.J. Upton bounced a ground rule double over the center field wall, giving the Rays a 5-3 lead. Tampa Bay wrapped up the scoring with a run in the seventh, when Bartlett scored on a Carl Crawford and the Rays cruised home with the 6-3 win.
David Price pitched 7 innings for the Rays, allowing 3 runs on 3 hits, with 5 strike outs and 3 walks to get the win, improving to 13-5. Rafael Soriano fanned 2 in the ninth, getting his 25th save of the season. Mitch Talbot went 5 1/3 for Cleveland, allowing 5 runs on 7 hits, with 8 strike outs and 1 walk, slipping to 8-9.
The Rays are now 58-38 and are 3 games behind the Yankees in the A.L. East. They also lead the A.L. Wild Card chase. Tampa Bay concludes a three game series in Cleveland today at 1:05pm EDT, before returning home on Monday, July 26th for their longest home stand of the season, 11 games, with the first of a four-game set against Detroit, to be followed by three against the Yankees and four against Minnesota. Juan Uribe's 7th inning grand slam in the seventh broke open a close game and helped the San Francisco Giants beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 10-3.
The Giants had a 3-1 lead when Uribe unloaded his bomb in the seventh, then 3 more runs in the eighth secured the win San Francisco. Buster Posey got 2 hits, extending hgis hit streak to 17 games.
Madison Bumgarner went 7 innings for the Giants, allowing 2 runs on 5 hits with 7 strike outs and 3 walks, picking up his fourth straight win, to improve to 4-2. Ian Kennedy took the loss for Arizona, allowing 4 runs on 6 hits over 6 2/3 innings, with 6 strike outs and 3 walks, slipping to 5-8.
San Francisco continues their four-game set at Arizona this afternoon at 7:10pm EDT, before returning home Monday for 4 against Florida and 3 against the Dodgers. The Giants have a big 3-game series at home against San Diego coming up August 13th through 15th. Next Saturday's game with the Dodgers airs on FOX, with the Sunday game against the Dodgers showing on ESPN.

TAMPA – The Tampa Bay Storm defeated the Alabama Vipers, 53-29, on Saturday night in front of 15,685 fans at the St. Pete Times Forum in Tampa, Fla.
It seemed to take the Storm one quarter to find their game and return to their winning ways. The Storm went scoreless in the first quarter and trailed 10-0 before going on a 33-0 scoring tear.
Storm quarterback Brett Dietz finished the game 19-of-31 for 240 yards and three touchdowns before being replaced by Drew Weatherford in the fourth quarter. On Dietz’ final drive, he found Tyrone Timmons on a 14-yard touchdown reception to open up the fourth quarter to make the score 53-16. The touchdown pass was Dietz’ 100th of the season, making him the just the sixth quarterback in AFL history to reach that mark. With the touchdown, Timmons also set a franchise record for most touchdown receptions in a single season (36) surpassing George LaFrance (35 touchdowns in 1998).
The Storm turned in a less than impressive first quarter. The Vipers jumped out to a quick lead after a Brian Jackson 37-yard field goal on the opening drive. Trying to even the score, Storm kicker Garrett Rivas lined up for a field goal attempt, but his kick was blocked by recently activated Brandon Johnson. The Vipers capitalized on the block and would score on their first play of the drive on a trick play. With 15-seconds remaining in the first quarter, Tony Colston threw a lateral to Michael Johnson. Johnson dropped back and found Dan Alexander wide-open for a 33-yard touchdown to make the score 10-0.
After the scoreless first quarter for Tampa, the Storm’s 33-point scoring tear ended at the 7:31 mark in the third quarter. The route began with an Eric Ortiz touchdown scamper with 11:07 remaining in the first half. After a Michael Hawthorne interception, Ortiz would find the end zone for the second time on consecutive drives. Terrance Royal punched in the Storm’s third rushing touchdown of the half before newly acquired defensive back Jonathan Ordway intercepted a Colston pass. The Storm would capitalize with a Rivas 23-yard field goal as time expired in the first half.
Dietz would hook up with Hank Edwards to open up the second half on an eight-yard touchdown reception, tallying his first passing touchdown of the evening. Vipers full back Dan Alexander would finally find the end zone on a 32-yard run. After the drive, Jeffrey Mroz would take over at quarterback for Alabama as they trailed 33-16.
Mroz finished the game 6 of 12 for 44 yards and one touchdown strike.
Hank Edwards led Storm receivers with 88 yards and a touchdown. The Storm tallied four sacks (Cliff Dukes, Kelvin Kinney, Jermaine Smith and Tim McGill) to aid the victory.
Viper fullback/linebacker Dan Alexander compiled 74 rushing yards for two touchdowns and 33 receiving yards for a touchdown.

CLERMONT, Ind. -- This time, there was no controversial finish.
For the second Nationwide Series race in a row, Carl Edwards went side-by-side for the lead on the final lap. But Saturday night at O'Reilly Raceway Park, Kyle Busch held Edwards off to win the Kroger 200 at the 0.686-mile track -- his eighth victory of the 2010 season.
Last week at Gateway International Raceway, Edwards dumped Brad Keselowski coming to the checkered flag, triggering a multicar accident and forcing NASCAR to penalize both drivers.
This time, Edwards raced Busch cleanly, and Busch grabbed his 38th career Nationwide Series victory, second only to Mark Martin on the all-time win list. Martin has 48 wins in the series.
Busch said the thought of Edwards roughing him up for the lead on a green-white-checkered did enter his mind, and he did all he could to avoid trouble.
"You're so vulnerable running the top side like you do here that people can dive-bomb you on the bottom and slide up into you. I knew it was there, but if I could just keep enough momentum and just keep my car rolling, then I felt like any time he'd lay a bumper to me, he'd get sideways, too," Busch said. "... Carl was right there. He could've used me up more than he did, but it could've cost us both time instead of him just being able to get by. You've got to have a really, really methodical way of going at it here. There just wasn't enough time for him to do it in two laps."
As it turned out, Edwards wasn't about to put the leader in jeopardy this week.
"I wasn't going to move Kyle out of the way," Edwards said. "I inadvertently got into him just a little off of [Turn] 4 one time. Fortunately, it didn't cause damage to either of our cars. But, no, I couldn't move him out of the way. We've raced really well together. We've had one of the best races I've ever had in my life last year here. This probably feels like a better race to him because he won, but the one I won last year, that was one of the coolest races I've had. It seems like we've really raced well together the last couple years, and I enjoy that."
Edwards and some others on the lead lap pitted for fresh tires on Lap 162, with Edwards restarting 11th with 28 laps to go. Edwards sliced through the top 10 to get to second, and a caution came out with six laps to go.
"I thought it was an opportunity, but [Busch] got me on the restart. His tires were 30 laps older, and somehow he was able go as fast as he was going," Edwards said. "I think if we didn't get the caution, it was going to be really interesting with lapped traffic. But my hat's off to those guys.
"We didn't have any chance of winning that race without those new tires. [Crew chief] Drew [Blickensderfer] took the tires, and it gave us a shot to win. I can't complain about that."
On the green-white-checkered restart, which took the race one lap beyond its posted distance, Busch got the jump on Edwards into Turn 1, though Edwards tried to get to the inside lane on the white flag lap and on the final lap. But Busch was up to the task.
"It was good, hard, clean racing," said Busch, who led four times for 144 of the 201 laps. "That's what happens when you race guys cleanly over time and race each other with respect -- you get respect back."
Ron Hornaday, who won Friday night's Truck Series race here, ran in the top five for most of the race until he and the lapped car of J.C. Stout got together in Turn 2 on Lap 161.
"Lapper just turned left," Hornaday said after he drove his damaged car behind the wall.
Aric Almirola finished third, with pole-sitter Trevor Bayne fourth and Reed Sorenson fifth.
After the race, the left-front shock of Almirola's No. 88 car wouldn't rebound, and it was to be sent to NASCAR's research and development center for evaluation.
