HOUSTON --  Tampa Bay's hitters aren't accustomed to slugfests, but they came through when called upon on Sunday after Jeff Niemann lasted only three innings against the Astros.

Matt Joyce delivered with a pinch-hit, go-ahead two-run double as part of a four-run eighth inning, and Evan Longoria sealed the win with a three-run home run -- his second of the game -- in the top of the ninth inning to secure the sweep in a 14-10 victory at Minute Maid Park.

"It was back and forth," Longoria said. "I don't know if there's really a word for it. These are the kind of games we need to win."

The Giants knew that Madison Bumgarner would excel Sunday, long before their Interleague contest against the Indians even began.

"When I got here, I knew he was going to do well," said third baseman Pablo Sandoval.

"I'll go back as far as his last outing," said manager Bruce Bochy. "I knew this kid would bounce back. There was no doubt in my mind."

Dominance replaced doubt, as Bumgarner recovered from a historically dreadful performance to strike out a career-high 11 batters in seven innings and lead the Giants to a 3-1 victory -- completing their three-game series sweep.

SONOMA, California -- Sonoma County is famous for wineries, not woodsheds, but Kurt Busch found the latter Sunday at Infineon Raceway, administering a good old-fashioned whipping to his Sprint Cup Series competition in the Toyota/Save Mart 350.

Busch led 76 of 110 laps and beat runner-up Jeff Gordon to the finish line by 2.685 seconds to win his first race of the season and the 23rd of his career, tying him with Ricky Rudd for 26th on the career win list. The victory, which broke a 38-race drought, was Busch's first on a road course.

in IIHF InLine Hockey World Championship Gold-Medal Game
Team USA Captures Silver Medal

PARDUBICE, Czech Republic – Itan Chavira (Upland, Calif.) scored twice and J.P. Beilsten (St. Louis, Mo.) had two assists, as the U.S. Inline National Team fell to the Czech Republic, 3-2, in the gold-medal game of the 2011 International Ice Hockey Federation InLine Hockey World Championship.

Team USA captured the silver medal with a 5-0-0-1 (W-OTW-OTL-L) overall record, appearing in the championship game the last three seasons.

"We lost a tight game," said Rob Chornomud, head coach of the U.S. Inline National Team. "We were two undefeated teams coming in. I'm really proud of the way we battled to the end of the game.”

The Czech Republic jumped out to a 1-0 lead after the first period. Chavira scored his first power-play goal to even the score early in the second period with help from Shawn Gawrys (St. Louis, Mo.) and Beilsten. The Czech Republic connected for a goal with the man advantage before taking a 3-1 lead at halftime.

Chavira scored his second power-play goal of the game in the third period but the U.S. wasn't able to complete the comeback. Team USA goalie Troy Redmann (Brea, Calif.) stopped all 19 shots in the last two periods, making 33 saves in total.

NOTES: Itan Chavira scored 10 goals in the tournament, with eight goals in the last three games ... Rob Chornomud is serving as head coach of the U.S. InLine National Team for the third consecutive year, while former U.S. Inline National Team member Josh Milewski is the assistant coach for the second straight year … In the 15-year history of the IIHF InLine Hockey World Championship, the United States has earned gold medals in 1996, 1997, 2004, 2006 and 2010; silver medals in 1998, 2001, 2009 and 2011; and bronze medals at the 2000, 2003 and 2005 tournaments. There was no tournament played in 1999.

HOUSTON --  Quality starts seem to be contagious for Tampa Bay pitchers these days.

Wade Davis won his third consecutive start on Saturday night, allowing one run in seven innings in a 7-2 win against the Astros at Minute Maid Park, pitching the Rays to a season-high nine games over .500.

The Rays are 7-1 in their past eight games, and their starters have allowed just nine earned runs in 57 1/3 innings over that span. On the road trip, Tampa Bay starters have allowed six earned runs in 36 innings.

NEWTON, Iowa -- The last time Marco Andretti won an IZOD IndyCar Series race he was a 19-year-old rookie who shaved about once a week.

That was August 27, 2006, at Infineon Raceway. Under the lights at Iowa Speedway on a chilly summer night, the 24-year-old Andretti's 78-race drought came to an end. He probably shaved in the morning, too.

Andretti overtook former Andretti Autosport teammate Tony Kanaan on Lap 232 for the lead and went on to record a 0.7932-of-a-second victory in the Iowa Corn Indy 250 presented by Pioneer at Iowa Speedway.

Andretti's previous best finish this season was fourth at Barber Motorsports Park, and since his previous victory he had three runner-up finishes (including Iowa Speedway in the inaugural 2007 race).

ELKHART LAKE, Wisconsin -- Reed Sorenson won the Bucyrus 200 Nationwide Series race Saturday at Road America under caution -- and under odd circumstances.

Justin Allgaier was leading when caution was called on the final lap of the third green-white-checkered-flag attempt on the 4.048-mile road course, but he ran out of gas at the top of Turn 6, allowing Sorenson to assume the lead on the 57th lap of the scheduled 50-lap race.

But as the cars continued toward the finish, Ron Fellows zipped past Sorenson and was the first car to reach the pace car, which leads the cars around the track during cautions. Sorenson and Fellows crossed the finish line side by side, and after deliberation, NASCAR ruled Sorenson the winner. Cars are not allowed to pass under caution but must maintain pace-car speed.

Fellows finished second, and Jacques Villeneuve third.

The victory was the fourth of Sorenson's career and first since 2007.

in IIHF InLine Hockey World Championship Semifinals
Team USA Advances to Gold-Medal Game vs. Czech Republic Tomorrow

PARDUBICE, Czech Republic – Itan Chavira (Upland, Calif.) scored twice and Gerald Osterkamp (Covina, Calif.) had two assists, as the U.S. Inline National Team defeated Canada, 4-2, in the semifinal round of the 2011 International Ice Hockey Federation InLine Hockey World Championship.

With the victory, Team USA improved to 5-0-0-0 (W-OTW-OTL-L) overall and advanced to the gold-medal game. The U.S. will have a chance to defend last year's tournament title when it faces the host Czech Republic tomorrow (June 25) at 12 p.m. EDT.

“We've been in this situation before," said Rob Chornomud, head coach of the U.S. Inline National Team. "We need to focus on putting our best game out there for a full 48 minutes tomorrow in order to take the crowd out of it and give us our best chance at the gold.”

Team USA jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first period thanks to goals by Shawn Gawrys (St. Louis, Mo.) and Nathan Sigmund (San Diego, Calif.). The U.S. then extended its advantage to three goals when Chavira connected less than three minutes into the second. But Canada answered to make the score 3-1 in favor of the United States at halftime.

Both teams exchanged goals in the third period, as Chavira logged his second goal of the night. Then, Team USA goalie Troy Redmann (Brea, Calif.) denied Canada's attempt at a comeback by turning aside all 12 shots he faced in the final frame to secure the victory. Redmann stopped 26 shots in total.

NOTES: Team USA out-shot Canada, 33-28 ... Shields became the first Rays pitcher in franchise history to toss three consecutive complete games after allowing three hits in a 5-1 win over the Astros on Friday night at Minute Maid Park, the club's Major League-leading 24th road win. The effort was Shields' sixth complete game of the season in 16 outings.

SAN FRANCISCO --   Andres Torres' bat woke up Friday night largely because he found a way to sleep.

Torres had endured bouts of insomnia, a malady he kept mostly to himself. The cycle grew more vicious recently as he'd struggle to hit at the ballpark, then dwell on it at home. Instead of reclining on his mattress, Torres would prop it against a wall and hit teed-up balls into it, desperately trying to sharpen his swing.

Torres shared his secret with Giants manager Bruce Bochy, who kept his leadoff batter and starting center fielder out of the lineup during the previous two games to help him clear his mind. Fortified by this break and energized with the help of new medication to help him sleep, Torres went 3-for-4 and led the Giants' comeback in a 4-3 Interleague victory over the Cleveland Indians.
