The Tampa Bay Juniors EJ South and Empire South teams played in the Boston Junior Bruins Shootout over the weekend.

The Empire South team lost to Maksymum 7-3 on Friday. Goals were scored by David Cross and Ryan Odgers. On Saturday, they lost to New York Apple Core 8-1, with Ben Winter scoring the only goal. And on Sunday, the Juniors lost to the South Shore Kings 6-2, with David Cross and Ryan Odgers scoring goals.

The EJ South team tied the Valley Junior Warriors 2-2. No stats were available for that game. On Saturday, they lost 5-4 to the Mass Maple Leafs, with Tommy Whiteley scoring twice and Chase Anderson and Daniel Clifford once each. Then, on Sunday, the Juniors were topped by the Boston Bandits 3-1. Chase Anderson scored the only goal.

Both teams are off this coming weekend. They both play at Hampton Roads on Friday, October 6th, then at the EJHL South Showcase on Saturday and Sunday, October 7th and 8th.

The EJ South team will play the 2nd annual Tampa Pro Alumni game on Saturday, October 15th, before both teams host the Space Coast Hurricanes on Saturday and Sunday, October 22nd and 23rd.

PHOENIX, Az. -- Disappointment and dismay marked the end of Tim Lincecum's season Sunday. But he already began finding hope for next season.

Lincecum became one of the unlikeliest pitchers in history to have a losing record as the Giants lost to the Arizona Diamondbacks, 5-2. The two-time Cy Young Award winner and four-time All-Star absorbed the decision to finish with a 13-14 mark, the first sub-.500 mark in his five-year career.

LOUDON, N.H. -- After climbing from his winning car Sunday at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, Tony Stewart made the understatement of the year.

"We've got a shot at this thing," said Stewart, who by taking the checkered flag in the Sylvania 300 became the second driver to win the first two races in the Chase for the Sprint Cup.

In a dramatic reversal of fortune, Stewart won the race -- and grabbed a seven-point lead in the Cup standings over 12th-place finisher Kevin Harvick -- when Clint Bowyer ran out of fuel with fewer than three laps to go.

"If that's not a flip-flop from last year, I don't know what is," Stewart radioed to crew chief Darian Grubb after crossing the finish line.

Stewart led last year's Chase race at the Magic Mile but handed the victory to Bowyer when he ran out of fuel on the final lap.

With his second consecutive victory, his second of the season and the 41st of his career, Stewart has more than a shot at the title. The 2002 and 2005 Cup champion, who downplayed his own chances entering NASCAR's 10-race playoff, now has to be considered the favorite.

Brad Keselowski parlayed pit strategy into a second-place run, and Greg Biffle, who won the first two Chase races in 2008, came home third, followed by Jeff Gordon and Brian Vickers. Matt Kenseth, David Ragan, Carl Edwards, Juan Montoya and Regan Smith completed the top 10.

Thud! goes the win streak as B.C. routs Riders

Regina, Sk -- The Saskatchewan Roughriders, on a high after winning three straight, allowed 40+ points for the third time this season, as the B.C. Lions administered an old-fashioned beat down, rolling to a 42-5 win over the Riders, in front of 30,048 at Taylor Field in Regina.

The B.C. Lions opened with the ball and turned it into points, driving from their own 31 to the Saskatchewan 9, eating up 6:59 of the opening quarter in the process, ending with a 26 yard field goal from former Rider Paul McCallum, his 23rd straight successful boot, to grab a 3-0 lead. After holding Saskatchewan to a 2 and out, the Leos dominated the ball on their next possession, driving from their own 18, before having to call on McCallum again, this one from 37 yards out, for a 6-0 lead, with 2:19 to play in the opening quarter. Disaster struck the Riders on their next possession, with a Marc Parenteau snap sailing over Durant's head, with B.C. recovering at the Saskatchewan 22.

Tim Brown rumbled in from 13 yards out on the first play of the second quarter, with McCallum converting for a 13-0 Lion lead just 37 seconds into the period. The Regina boys, who ran just five plays in their first two possessions, started their next drive, thanks in part to a major penalty, near midfield and got one first down, but stalled and had to punt. Out stepped kicker Chris Milo, who drilled a punt 56 yards on his first try. This one, while not as far, was even better, bouncing out of bounds at the 5. On second down from the 10, Travis Lulay scrambled out of pressure and found Arland Bruce at the 45 and Bruce did the rest, rumbling for a 100 yard catch and run major score. McCallum converted with 11:03 left and the sell-out crowd sat stunned as B.C. built their lead to 20-0. Aided by a hit out of bounds on the next punt that resulted in the ejection of Saskatchewan's Nick Graham, the Lions picked up another 37 yard field goal from McCallum for a 23-0 lead, with 7:33 still to play in the first half. Just when it appeared that the Roughriders were getting their offense untracked on their next possession, a Durant pass in the left flat intended for Dallas Baker was picked off by B.C's Ryan Phillips at the 29 and returned 81 yards for a major score. McCallum converted and with 4:10 still to play in the first half, the Lions' lead grew to a shocking 30-0. Milo, one of the few 1st half sparks for Saskatchewan, kicked a 30 yard field goal on the final play of the opening half, slicing the deficit to 30-3 at two-quarter time.

A 51 yard McCallum punt single 5:09 into the third made it a 31-3 game. The B.C. lead would then grow to 38-3 late in the quarter, as Geroy Simon hauled in a 14 yard pass for the 95th touchdown of his career. With the McCallum convert with 1:36 left 'til three-quarter time, the rout, if it wasn't before, was officially underway. The stats would show it too, as the Lions had a 364-183 advantage in total yards through 45 minutes.

McCallum kicked a 62 yard punt single 1:14 into the fourth, for a 39-3 B.C. lead. A 16 yard McCallum field goal with 6:29 left, which put him 2 away from Dave Ridgeway's CFL-record 28 straight, made it 42-3 Leos. Ryan Dinwiddie replaced Durant as Rider QB and immediately led the home team into scoring position, reaching the B.C. 1 at the three-minute warning, but ended up turning the ball over on downs. McCallum conceded a safety touch with 1:49 left and the Lions cruised from there for the 42-5 win.

For B.C., Travis Lulay was 19-for-27 passing for 303 yards and 2 touchdowns, Jarious Jackson was 5-for-6 for 40 yards and Mike Reilly was 1-for-2 for 12 yards. Arland Bruce caught 2 passes for 116 yards, one of them that 100 yard scoring strike, with Geroy Simon hauling in 9 balls for 96 yards and a major. Tim Brown rushed for a touchdown, Ryan Phillips ran back an interception for a major and Paul McCallum kicked 4 field goals, 2 punt singles and 4 converts. For the Riders, Darian Durant was 15-for-25 for 188 yards and 2 interceptions, Ryan Dinwiddie was 6-for-13 for 90 yards and Chris Milo kicked a field goal.

The win squares the Lions' record at 6-6, putting them just two pints behind West co-leaders Calgary and Edmonton while Saskatchewan falls to 4-8 for 8 points, fourth in the West.

The Roughriders travel to Calgary next Saturday, October 1st for a showdown with the Stampeders. Corvallis, Or. -- An 0-3 start for the first time in the Mike Riley era at Oregon State left the Beavers in a mood somewhere between discouraged and disgruntled.

“It’s hard to find the good in a loss,” safety Lance Mitchell said after OSU’s 27-19 loss to UCLA (2-2) Saturday in the Pac-12 opener for both teams at Reser Stadium. “The whole thing is bad.

“We’re 0-3. It’s hard to swallow. We have a lot of season ahead of us, and we have a lot of work to do.”

In his 11 years at Oregon State, Riley had started 0-2 before. But never 0-3. The wait for the first win continues.

Men's and Women's College Hockey Polls Set to Begin
Men's and Women's Division I Preseason Polls to Be Released Sept. 26 and 27

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – USA Hockey today announced its 2011-12 schedule for the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Men's and Women's College Hockey Polls that will be released throughout the upcoming season. The men's preseason poll will come out Monday (Sept. 26) followed by the women's preseason poll on Tuesday (Sept. 27).

With some exceptions, the men's poll will be released each Monday, while the women's poll will be available each Tuesday. Polls will be published online at usahockey.com and usatoday.com, as well as in USA Today.

The USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine College Hockey Polls are conducted each week in conjunction with the American Hockey Coaches Association. They include input from coaches and journalists representing each of the five NCAA Division I men's ice hockey conferences and the four NCAA Division I women's ice hockey conferences, as well as composite votes from officers of the AHCA and USA Hockey Magazine, the most widely distributed hockey magazine in the world.

The men's poll is entering its 17th year after the first poll was distributed at the start of the 1995-96 season, while the women's poll enters its 15th year, after beginning in 1997-98.

NOTES: The men's poll will take a one-week hiatus following the Sept. 26 preseason poll, before returning Oct. 10. The poll will then be released every Monday, with the exception of Dec. 26 and April 2 ... The women's poll will be distributed each Tuesday from Sept. 27-March 20, with the exception of Dec. 20 and Dec. 27.

Tampa Bay's hopes to slingshot its way into the postseason grew more remote after coming out flat following an 11-game road trip and taking a 5-1 loss to the Blue Jays at Tropicana Field.

Before Friday night's game even started, the Rays knew the Red Sox had been rained out in their first game of a three-game weekend series at Yankee Stadium. So the collective thought bubble hovering over the head of every Rays player was "1 1/2 games," which is what the margin would have been between the Rays and Wild Card-leading Boston, had the Rays managed to win.

Instead, the loss dropped the Rays to 2 1/2 back with just five games remaining in their season. The Rays have now lost four of their last five games after winning 11 of their previous 15.

But the raucous cheers of the Chase Field crowd, celebrating Arizona's 3-1 victory over San Francisco that clinched the National League West title for the D-backs, could be clearly heard in the visitors' clubhouse. Though the Giants remained virtually mute as they showered, dressed and ate, the fans' bellowing bathed them in unwelcome noise and confirmed what had just happened.

Officially, the Giants still have a faint chance to reach the postseason. They trail Wild Card-leading Atlanta by five games with five to play. But the combination of circumstances required for the Giants to forge a tie by Game No. 162 on Wednesday is almost impossible. For all intents and purposes, Friday night's outcome dashed the Giants' hopes of repeating as World Series champions.

of Revolutionary Online Coaching Education Modules

12 & Under Coaching Module Now Available

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - USA Hockey launched yesterday its third in a series of revolutionary online, age-specific coaching education modules that will further enhance the organization's already highly regarded Coaching Education Program. After releasing the module specific to 8 & Under kids on Sept. 6, and the 10 & Under module on Sept. 13, the 12 & Under module is now available as well.

The modules address on-ice skill development and team concepts, as well as off-ice training and overall athlete wellness. USA Hockey-registered coaches must pass the age-specific module pertaining to the age level of children they are coaching (8 & Under, 10 & Under, 12 & Under, 14 & Under and 16/18 & Under).

All modules are hosted by U.S. Olympian Ed Olczyk and include content from longtime NHL coaches Barry Smith and Mike Sullivan; American Development Model Regional Managers Roger Grillo and Bob Mancini; medical professionals Dr. Dan Freigang and Dr. Chris Winter; and women's hockey experts such as current and former U.S. Women's National Team head coaches Mark Johnson, Ben Smith and Katey Stone.

NEW YORK, Ny. -- Tampa Bay has been resilient all season. After the results of Wednesday's action, that resiliency is going to be tested in the coming days.

The Rays dropped a doubleheader to the Yankees at Yankee Stadium by identical 4-2 scores. But Wednesday could actually have been worse as the Red Sox could not escape their spiral and they dropped a 6-4 decision to the Orioles -- Boston has now lost 12 out of 15. LOS ANGELES, Ca. -- Various Giants continued auditioning for 2012 while prolonging the business of 2011.

Justin Christian and Brett Pill, seeking bit parts or more for next season, contributed heavily to Wednesday night's robust offensive effort that lifted the Giants to an 8-5 decision over the Los Angeles Dodgers and sustained their faint postseason hopes.

San Francisco is all but through in the National League West race. Arizona's victory over Pittsburgh trimmed the D-backs' magic number for clinching the division title to two. The D-backs are idle Thursday but can seal a tie for the West crown if the Giants lose the series finale to the Dodgers. Even if the Giants win, all Arizona needs is one victory during its three-game weekend series against San Francisco at Chase Field to capture the West.

David Silverman will soon open the nation's largest museum dedicated to speeding silver balls and fast-motion flippers. The National Pinball Museum will open in November in a 12,000 square foot space in Baltimore's tourist district and will include exhibits on the history of pinball and will be stocked with up to 900 pinball machines.
