Abdelkader, Howard Added to 2012 U.S. Men's National Team

Team USA to Compete in IIHF World Men's Championship, May 4-20, in Finland


COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Forward Justin Abdelkader (Muskegon, Mich./Detroit Red Wings/Michigan State Univ.) and goaltender Jimmy Howard (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Detroit Red Wings/Univ. of Maine) have been added to the U.S. Men's National Team roster for the 2012 International Ice Hockey Federation Men's World Championship it was announced today by USA Hockey. The tournament is scheduled for May 4-20, 2012, in Helsinki, Finland and Stockholm, Sweden.

Abdelkader and Howard are making their debuts on the U.S. Men's National Team, though each player has represented Team USA in the past. Abdelkader played for the U.S. National Junior Team that won the bronze medal at the 2007 IIHF World Junior Championship. Howard backstopped the U.S. Men's National Under-18 Team to the gold medal at the 2002 IIHF World Men's Under-18 Championship and was a member of the U.S. National Junior Team at the 2003 IIHF World Junior Championship. Howard also spent two seasons with USA Hockey's National Team Development Program from 2000-02.

The first 17 players for the U.S. Men's National Team were announced on April 11. Forward Joey Crabb defenseman Chris Butler and goalie John Curry have been added since then. Team USA now has 12 forwards, six defensemen and three goaltenders on its roster. The maximum roster size is 25, which includes three goaltenders and 22 forwards and defensemen.

St. Petersburg, FL. -- Lumber and lightning led a 5-0 Rays win over the Angels on Tuesday night at Tropicana Field.

Rays starter David Price brought the lightning with his 95-mph fastball while completing a shutout en route to claiming his third win of the season. The lineup behind him provided the lumber with four home runs.

In victory, the Rays extended their winning streak to three games, moving to 10-7. They have won five of their last six games and they are 6-1 at Tropicana Field this season.

BRNO, Czech Republic - The U.S. Men's National Under-18 Team defeated Sweden, 7-0, here this evening to win the gold medal at the 2012 International Ice Hockey Federation Men's World Under-18 Championship. Nicolas Kerdiles (Irvine, Calif.) had two goals and three assists, and Collin Olson (Apple Valley, Minn.) stopped all 27 shots he faced, as Team USA captured its fourth straight gold medal in the tournament. "I'm very proud of how our players conducted themselves throughout this tournament," said Danton Cole, head coach of the U.S. Men's National Under-18 Team. "We worked hard, played a very disciplined game and never let up. These players deserve to call themselves champions." The U.S. scored first at 18:45 of the opening period when Thomas Di Pauli (Woodridge, Ill.) jammed the puck past Swedish netminder Oscar Dansk. Ryan Hartman (West Dundee, Ill.) and Andrew Copp (Ann Arbor, Mich.) collected assists on the goal. Team USA led Sweden, 1-0, heading into the first intermission. St. Petersburg, FL. -- Four sacrifice flies don't measure up to one Evan Longoria walk-off homer on the excitement meter. However, Tampa Bay's club-record for sacrifice flies did equate to a 6-2 win over Minnesota Sunday afternoon at Tropicana Field with a crowd of 26,507 watching.

"You know what, [the sacrifice fly] is very underestimated and it has not been written about enough," Rays manager Joe Maddon teased. "From a spectator's perspective, one of the more boring plays in baseball, but from the dugout's perspective, very exciting. I cannot tell you how exciting it is to see that."

By winning, Tampa Bay claimed its second consecutive series and its fourth win in its last five games while moving to 9-7 on the season.

The single-admission doubleheader was scheduled after Sunday afternoon's game was postponed due to inclement weather. Game 1 is at 4:10 p.m. EDT.

Mets right-hander Miguel Batista will start the first game for New York, which won the second game of the series on Saturday in dramatic walk-off fashion after blowing a ninth-inning lead. He'll be up against the sputtering Tim Lincecum, who is experiencing a discouraging three-game stretch unlike any other he's seen in his impressive young career.

Lincecum has allowed 16 runs in three starts this season, the most of any three-game stretch in his six-year career, and is 0-2 with a 10.54 ERA.

James Shields pitches in the top spot in the Rays' rotation, but Maddon does not consider the right-hander a true No. 1 just yet. However, after yet another dominant performance by Shields in Saturday night's 4-1 win over the Twins, Maddon did allow that Shields "is morphing into" a No. 1.

"I think what he did last year definitely put him on the right path to be that guy," Maddon said. "What he's doing right now could pretty much put him in that category.

At 10:52 p.m. ET, when Gregor Blanco put the squeeze on the game's final out in center field, the Giants put a 4-3, 10-inning victory over the Mets out of its misery. It could have been easier, neater and shorter. It might have been a blueprint type of victory, the sort Giants general manager Brian Sabean sees on a January evening when he's working on the personnel puzzle. Had Wilson been available to blunt the Mets' resistance in the ninth inning, Sabean might have found this enjoyable, without qualification.

Curry Added to 2012 U.S. Men's National Team

Team USA to Compete in IIHF World Men's Championship, May 4-20, in Finland

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Goaltender John Curry (Shorewood, Minn./Hamburg Freezers/Boston University) has been added to the U.S. Men's National Team roster for the 2012 International Ice Hockey Federation Men's World Championship it was announced today by USA Hockey. The tournament is scheduled for May 4-20, 2012, in Helsinki, Finland and Stockholm, Sweden.

Curry will be making his U.S. National Team debut, however, he has represented Team USA at the 2007 and 2011 Deutschland Cups in Germany. The U.S. was the runner-up in 2007.

The first 17 players for the U.S. Men's National Team were announced on April 11. Forward Joey Crabb and defenseman Chris Butler were added on April 12 and 13, respectively. Team USA now has 12 forwards, six defensemen and two goaltenders on its roster. The maximum roster size is 25, which includes three goaltenders and 22 forwards and defensemen.

NOTES: Seventeen of the 20 members of Team USA announced played U.S. college hockey ... They have survived a 10-game trip to Detroit, Boston and Toronto and they came out of it not too bad according to manager Joe Maddon, considering the degree of difficulty of their early-season schedule.

"It's been a difficult schedule," Maddon said after the Rays defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 9-4 on Thursday, led by Evan Longoria, who hit a two-run homer and had four runs batted in. "I'm really proud of the way our guys have fought through it."

San Francisco, CA.-- As anticipated, Giants closer Brian Wilson will undergo reconstructive surgery, commonly known as Tommy John surgery, to repair his right (throwing) elbow Thursday.

Famed orthopedist James Andrews will perform the procedure on Wilson, 30, at his Pensacola, Fla., clinic. Giants team orthopedist Ken Akizuki will be on hand to assist. Andrews also handled Wilson's first Tommy John surgery in 2003. Wilson resumed pitching in 2004, made his Major League debut two years later and proceeded to make three National League All-Star teams.

1998 - Kenyan runner Moses Tanui, 32, won the Boston Marathon for the second time. He also registered the third fastest time with 2 hours 7 minutes and 34 seconds.

2003 - The Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Washington Capitals 2-1 in the third overtime to win the series 4-2. It was the first time in the 11-year history of the Tampa Bay franchise that they advanced in the playoffs.
