
After a modest two-game, early season win streak, the Tampa Bay Lightning have now lost two straight, losing 4-1 at Pittsburgh to the Penguins tonight.
Bill Guerin scored a power play goal at 4:56 and Sergei Gonchar scored at 17:10, giving Pittsburgh a 2-0 lead after one.
In the second, a Steven Stamkos power play goal for the Lightning at 6:18 cut the deficit to 2-1, but Pittsburgh scored on a goal by Pascal Dupuis at 8:15 to lead 3-1 after two.
In the third, Mike Rupp scored for the Penguins at 11:21, and Pittsburgh skated it home from there, winning 4-1.
The Penguins outshot Tampa Bay 33-23. Antero Niittymaki, despite allowing 4 goals, was brilliant for the Lightning, making 29 saves, several of those coming at the end of the second period on two straight two-man disadvatges. Marc-Andre Fleury had 22 saves for Pittsburgh. Both teams were 1-for-7 on the power play.
Tampa Bay is now 2-3-2 for 6 points, third in the Southeast, 2 points behind Atlanta and 4 behind Washington. The Penguins, who have now won 5 straight, are 7-1, tied with the Rangers for first in the Atlantic.
The Lightning come home for 4 games, the first coming next Thursday, October 22nd, against the San Jose Sharks. On Saturday, October 24th, the Buffalo Sabres are the opponents. Both those games start at 7:30p.m. EDT. Thursday, October 29th, Tampa Bay meets the Ottawa Senators for Hockey Fights Cancer Night. That game starts at 7:00p.m. EDT. Then, on Saturday, October 31st, it's a matinee game as the New Jersey Devils return for the second time this season, with faceoff set for 3:00p.m. EDT. The games can be heard locally on 620 WDAE and seen on Sun Sports, except for the October 24th game, which will air on WTOG.
