The Calgary Stampeders came from behind Thursday night, beating the Saskatchewan Roughriders 24-23 in front of 32,003 at Mosaic Stadium in the second pre-season game for both teams.
The Riders got on the board first as Rey Williams forced a fumble at the Calgary 37, which was recovered by Taj Smith. 5 plays and 37 yards later, Kory Sheets dove over from the 1 for the major. Chris Milo converted and Saskatchewan was up 7-0, 3:15 into the game. The Stamps would get their first points of the evening on a Rene Paredes 37 yard field goal with 5:46 to play in the opening quarter, cutting the deficit to 7-3. Calgary would take the lead late in the first on a 20 yard pass and run play from Drew Tate to Rob Cote. Paredes converted and the Stampeders were up 10-7, with 1:46 to play in the opening stanza.
The Calgary lead grew to 11-7 on a 63 yard Rob Maver punt single with 8:35 to go in the half. Paredes would tack on 3 more with a 35 yard field goal with 2:09 to play in the second.
In the third, the Stampeders conceded a safety touch 3:20 in, leaving their lead at 14-9. Sheets scored his second major of the night with a bruising 12 yard run. The Milo convert, coming with 8:12 to go, put the Riders back on top, at 16-14. Then, not quite 4 minutes later, Scott McHenry grabbed a 4 yard TD pass from Darian Durant. With the Milo convert, Saskatchewan went up by 9, at 23-14, with 4:21 left in the third, capping a 4 play, 62 yard drive.
Calgary sliced into the Rider lead in the opening minute of the fourth, with LaMarcus Coker rushing for a 1 yard touchdown. Paredes kicked the convert 58 seconds in, drawing the Stampders to within 2, at 23-21. Paredes would drive home a three pointer from 29 yards out with 2:20 left in regulation, putting Calgary back on top, 24-23. After forcing a two and out, the Stamps keep the ball the rest of the way, winning the game by one over Saskatchewan, 24-23.
Drew Tate led the Calgary offense, going 9-of-21 passing for 107 yards and a touchdown. Jon Cornish rushed 8 times for 50 yards and Khalil Paden caught 5 balls for 48 yards. For the Roughriders, Darian Durant was 14-of-23 passing for 112 yards, a touchdown and 1 interception. Kory Sheets ran 10 times for 97 yards and two majors and Chris Getzlaf caught 4 passes for 49 yards.
Both teams finished the pre-season at 1-1. Saskatchewan opens their regular season on Saturday, June 29th at the Edmonton Eskimos. Kickoff on 620ckrm, the Rider Radio Network and TSN, is set for 3:30pm EDT. The Stamps their season on Friday, June 28th at home against BC at 10:00pm EDT.
