A recent article in the St. Petersburg Times talked about a proposed $40 million in improvements to the home of the Tampa Bay Lightning, the St. Pete Times Forum. The improvements are to include installation of an old-fashioned pipe organ. Well, if that happens, sign me up for season tickets. One of my favorite memories of my time in the USHL was the night in Indianapolis where they played all organ music. That was cool. Organ music at a hockey or baseball game is way cooler than recorded music you'd normally hear on the radio.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Thirty players were selected to the preliminary roster for the U.S. Women's National Team that will play in the 2011 International Ice Hockey Federation World Women's Championship, as announced today by USA Hockey. The athletes will take part in a selection/training camp in Ann Arbor, Mich., from April 4-12, with the final 21-player roster set to be announced on April 9.

The camp will take place at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube, home to USA Hockey's National Team Development Program, and will feature two pre-world championship games against Canada on April 7 and 8.

The U.S. squad will depart on April 12 for the 2011 IIHF World Women's Championship, which runs from April 16-25 in Zurich and Winterthur, Switzerland. There, the Americans will be looking to defend their back-to-back world titles from 2008 and 2009 (a world championship was not held in 2010 due to the Olympic Winter Games).

The preliminary roster includes 27 skaters (18 forwards, nine defensemen) and three goaltenders. The roster will be reduced by nine skaters to form the final 21-player squad.

Sixteen members of the U.S. Women's National Team that competed in the 2010 Women's Four Nations Cup in November are vying for roster spots. There are a total of 16 Olympians on the preliminary list, including 15 who captured the world title with Team USA in 2009. Four players on the roster are coming off a gold-medal performance at the 2011 IIHF World Women's U18 Championship earlier this month, while a total of 12 have won gold medals with the U18 team.

Preliminary Roster Highlights

16 Olympians
15 World Champions
12 World U18 Champions
15 players from the 2009 World Women's Championship (gold)
16 players from the 2010 Four Nations Cup (second place)
9 Canadian Women's Hockey Leage/Western Women's Hockey League players

All 30 players have skated in at least one international event for Team USA. The only two who have not competed in either an Olympics, World Championship or World U18 Championship are Josephine Pucci (Pearl River, N.Y.), who skated in the 2010 Women's Four Nations Cup, and Jen Schoullis (Erie, Pa.), who played in the 2010 Under-22 Series. Nine players have not yet seen action at the senior level, including Blake Bolden (Stow, Ohio), Megan Bozek (Buffalo Grove, Ill.), Hannah Brandt (Vadnais Heights, Minn.), Carpenter, Amanda Kessel (Madison, Wis.), Amanda Pelkey (Montpelier, Vt.), Schoullis, Kelley Steadman (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) and Taylor Wasylk (Port Huron, Mich.). Kessel was named to the U.S. Women's National Team for the 2010 Women's Four Nations Cup, but missed the tournament due to injury ... Team USA has won three gold medals and nine silvers in the 12 previous IIHF World Women’s Championships. The U.S. has won three of the last four world championships (2005, 2008, 2009) … As previously announced, Harvard University's Katey Stone will serve as the head coach of the U.S. Women's National Team. First Lady Michelle Obama Teams with USA Hockey, NHL on Hockey-Focused "Let's Move" PSA

Thirty-Second Spot is First Step in Youth-Oriented Joint Venture, Will Debut on Versus during 2011 NHL All-Star Weekend

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- First lady Michelle Obama has teamed up with USA Hockey and the National Hockey League to produce a public service announcement as part of her “Let’s Move!” initiative that encourages children to become and stay active by playing hockey, as announced today by the White House, USA Hockey and the NHL.

The 30-second spot, which was shot in the White House, features the first lady detailing the many virtues and health benefits of playing hockey – including its ability to get the heart pumping, build lean muscle and teach teamwork – all while children are having fun. Scenes of boys and girls throughout the country playing the game in all its forms and in various settings show the myriad ways hockey can be enjoyed.

The PSA will debut on Versus’ nationwide coverage of the 2011 NHL SuperSkills on Saturday, Jan. 29, beginning at 7 p.m. ET, and run during Versus’ coverage of the 58th NHL All-Star Game on Sunday, Jan. 30. It will also air throughout the remainder of the 2010-11 NHL season and 2011 Stanley Cup Playoffs on all NHL media platforms and during games broadcast by League rightsholders.

First lady Michelle Obama launched Let's Move to solve the problem of childhood obesity within a generation. To extend the reach of messages and information about healthy eating and regular physical activities, USA Hockey and the NHL will team up to help promote the goals of the Let's Move! initiative and the Presidential Active Lifestyle Award through the sport of hockey.

For more information about the Let’s Move! initiative and the ways in which USA Hockey and the NHL are collaborating with the White House to promote healthier lifestyles for American children, visit letsmove.gov, USAHockey.com and nhl.com.

USA Hockey Winter Meetings Prove Productive

Organization Tops 100,000 8 & Under Players For First Time Ever

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Proposed rule changes, membership development, the American Development Model and safety were among the many topics at last weekend’s (Jan. 22-23) USA Hockey Winter Meetings.

“We had an extremely productive couple of days,” said Ron DeGregorio, president of USA Hockey. “We’re fortunate to have such a strong group of passionate people who care about helping move our sport forward.”

USA Hockey Executive Director Dave Ogrean announced the organization has already eclipsed its total membership count from a year ago and, for the first time in its history, USA Hockey has reached 100,000 registered players at the 8 & Under level.

“Try Hockey for Free clinics, OneGoal starter equipment programs and other initiatives are paying dividends,” said Ogrean. “The cooperative efforts of rink operators, local associations, districts and affiliates, coupled with support from the NHL and its member clubs, has created an environment that has enabled us to make tremendous progress in attracting new players to try our sport.”

In regard to rule changes, much conversation took place about the proposed modification that would prohibit body checking in games for youth hockey players until they reach the Bantam level (13-14 year-olds). The current rule allows checking in games at the Pee Wee level (11-12 year-olds).

“This is a proposal that has significant support and we look forward to continued dialogue throughout the country on this and all proposed rule changes,” said DeGregorio. “In the end, we need to do what is best for the kids who play the game.”

DeGregorio noted the board of directors is extremely pleased with the progress related to the American Development Model.

“With the support of the NHL, we launched the ADM in January of 2009 and have already made significant headway in its implementation throughout the country,” said DeGregorio. “That is a credit to the outstanding job our ADM regional managers are doing in educating those at the grassroots level. The focus on cross-ice hockey at the 8 & Under level this year is wonderful and, while I know we have a lot of work to do, we’re positively affecting the landscape of youth hockey in America. That’s exciting.”

Dr. Michael Stuart, USA Hockey’s chief medical officer and a professor of orthopedic surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., presented summary findings to the Board from the ice hockey summit on concussions he led in October at the Mayo Clinic. His presentation included the following recommendations to USA Hockey:

Implement concussion education for coaches, parents, officials and athletes

Through rule changes, eliminate tolerance of any contact to the head
Delay legal body checking in games in youth hockey until age 13

Emphasize current curriculum that teaches body control, angling, anticipation, body contact and body-checking skills

Eliminate fighting through more stringent penalties for engaging in such behavior

DeGregorio noted the Board will formally address Dr. Stuart’s recommendations at USA Hockey’s Annual Congress in June.

NOTES: Ron DeGregorio honored three people with the President’s Award for outstanding contributions to the organization, including Kevin McLaughlin, senior director of hockey development; Larry Reid, vice president and marketing council chair; and Tony Rossi, vice president and international council chair … USA Hockey’s board of directors will vote on all rule-change proposals at its Annual Congress this June. Specific information related to the proposal to modify the age of legal body checking in games can be found by clicking here. THIS WEEK: The U.S. National Under-18 Team travels to Cedar Rapids, Iowa on Friday (Jan. 28) to take on the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders of the United States Hockey League at 7:05 p.m. CT, at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena. On Saturday (Jan. 29), the road trip continues with a visit to Green Bay, Wis. where Team USA matches up against the Gamblers. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. CT at the Resch Center.

The Under-17 Team enjoys a well-deserved weekend off after playing every weekend since the conclusion of the World U17 Challenge. The team will face Chicago (Feb. 4) before beginning preparation for the upcoming Vlad Dzurilla Tournament Feb. 6-13.

U18 TEAM DROPS TWO AGAINST COLLEGE FOES: J.T. Miller (East Palestine, Ohio) and Zac Larraza (Scottsdale, Ariz.) each contributed a goal, but the Under-18 Team fell to Quinnipiac University, 4-2, at the TD Bank Sports Center.

Rocco Grimaldi (Rossmoor, Calif.) scored once and added two assists and Reid Boucher (Grand Ledge, Mich.) recorded a goal and an assist, but the Under-18 Team was edged by Providence College, 5-4, at Schneider Arena last Saturday (Jan. 22).

U17 TEAM CONTINUES HOT STREAK IN USHL: Ryan Hartman (West Dundee, Ill.) scored the deciding goal midway through the third period and Collin Olson (Apple Valley, Minn.) made 22 saves as the Under-17 Team edged the Sioux Falls Stampede, 3-2, at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube. The win marked the fifth in a row for the Under-17 Team in USHL action.

NTDP ALUMNI UPDATE: Two NTDP alumni were chosen as assistant captains for the 2011 National Hockey League All-Star Game this weekend: Blackhawks forward Patrick Kane (Buffalo, N.Y./2004-06) will be assisting Red Wings defenseman and captain Nicklas Lidstrom, while Ryan Kesler (Livonia, Mich./2000-02), a forward for the Canucks, will assist Hurricanes forward and captain Eric Staal ... Kesler is currently tied for third in the NHL in scoring (27). His latest tally came in a 7-1 drubbing of the Dallas Stars on Monday (Jan. 24). Six of his 27 scores have been game-winners, tied for best in the league ... R.J. Umberger (Pittsburgh, Pa./1998-2000) scored the overtime goal in the Blue Jackets' 3-2 win over the Nashville Predators this past weekend ... Red Wings goaltender Jimmy Howard (Ogdensburg, N.Y./2001-02) is tied for second place in victories between the pipes (23) and trails the league leaders by just one win ... Matt Carle (Anchorage, Alaska/2000-02) assisted on the overtime goal that gave the Philadelphia Flyers its 3-2 win over the Washington Capitals last week. U.S. Paralympic Sled Hockey Team, Taylor Chace Earn United States Olympic Committee Honors

Team USA Named USOC Paralympic Team of the Year; Chace Named USOC Paralympic SportsMan of the Year

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The 2010 U.S. Paralympic Sled Hockey Team and defenseman Taylor Chace (Hampton Falls, N.H.) were honored today with 2010 United States Olympic Committee awards. After capturing the Paralympic Winter Games gold medal in Vancouver, B.C., last March, the U.S. Paralympic Sled Hockey Team was named the USOC Paralympic Team of the Year, while Chace was named the USOC Paralympic SportsMan of the Year.

Last March, the United States became the first country to claim its second Paralympic Winter Games gold medal in sled hockey after Team USA posted a perfect 5-0-0-0 record (W-OTW-OTL-L) and topped Japan, 2-0, in the title game. The U.S. Paralympic Sled Hockey Team also set a record by outscoring its opponents, 18-0, to become the first-ever team to not allow a goal in a single Paralympic Winter Games.

"Our gold medal last year came as a result of tremendous sacrifice and dedication on the part of our players, our staff, their families and USA Hockey," said Ray Maluta, head coach of the U.S. National Sled Hockey Team and U.S. Paralympic Sled Hockey Team. "This award is a fitting tribute to everyone who worked so hard for that ultimate prize."

Chace played a huge role on the gold medal-winning U.S. squad. He was named the tournament's top defenseman, tied for second among touranment blue liners with five points (3-2) and tied for first with a plus-8 rating. Last summer, Chace was named the captain of this year's 2010-11 U.S. National Sled Hockey Team.

"Even after my spinal cord injury, I never lost my passion for hockey," said Chace, who suffered the injury in 2002 while playing junior hockey for the New Hampshire Junior Monarchs of the Eastern Junior Hockey League. "Winning gold last year was an amazing feeling, and an experience that I wouldn't trade for anything."

NOTES: This marks the second consecutive year that a U.S. sled hockey team and player captured the USOC Paralympic Team and SportsMan of the Year awards. Last year, the 2009-10 U.S. National Sled Hockey Team and goalie Steve Cash (Overland, Mo.) were honored ... The U.S. National Sled Hockey Team will take part in a camp this weekend in Indian Trail, N.C. On Thursday (Jan. 27), the team will meet with NASCAR's Joey Logano, who helped design and build custom sleds for the gold medal-winning 2010 U.S. Paralympic Sled Hockey Team.
