Late score enough as Riders tip Leos

Regina, SK. --A big touchdown catch late by Greg Carr provided the winning points Saturday night, as the Saskatchewan Roughriders beat the BC Lions 27-21, in front of a sell-out crowd of 32,690 at Mosaic Stadium in Regina.

Both teams had trouble getting their offenses going in the opening quarter, but the Riders were finally able to move the deep ball into BC territory as the scoreless first quarter came to an end.

The Saskatchewan drive, started in the opening quarter, would result in the games' opening points, as Darian Durant found a wide open Weston Dressler on a corner route 15 yards deep in the left side of the endzone, capping a 9 play, 78 yard drive. Sandro DeAngelis kicked the convert and the Roughriders had a 7-0 lead 1:33 into the second quarter. After holding BC to a 2 and out, Durant would find a streaking Dressler down the right sideline. Dressler reached out, hauled it in at around the 14 and did the rest, scoring on a 53 yard pass and run play. DeAngelis converted with 11:28 left in the half, for a 14-0 Saskatchewan lead. After their next drive stalled around midfield, Paul McCallum would kick a 51 yard punt single for a 14-1 Rider lead with 8:34 still on the second period clock. On their next possession Saskatchewan, after having a touchdown taken off the board by an offsides penalty, DeAngelis would boot a 40 yard field goal with 4:13 left, for a 17-1 lead. Chris Milo would add to the lead by kicking a 57 yard punt single with 44 seconds to play in the half for an 18-1 Rider lead. On the ensuing play, the Lions' Travis Lulay panicked under pressure, throwing a left-handed duck for an interception but would survive the mistake when Durant threw an interception on the next play. BC would start to move the ball but run out of time and the two teams would head into halftime with Saskatchewan enjoying that 18-1 advantage.

The Lions caught the first break of the second half when the Riders would turn the ball over on downs at their own 39. Paul McCallum would come on to kick a 40 yard field goal, cutting the deficit to 18-4, with 7:58 left in the third. Saskatchewan would get a point back for a 19-4 lead, when Milo came on to kick a 40 yard punt single with 4:44 left in the third. A spot foul for pass interference on Tristan Jackson would set BC up with a first down at the Roughrider 18, but they would have to settle for a 20 yard field goal by McCallum with 1:10 remaining, slicing the Saskatchewan lead to 19-7.

In the fourth, Milo would extend the lead 2:34 in with a 55 yard punt single, making the Roughrider lead 13, at 20-7. Marco Iannuzzi would get open in the endzone late for a 23 yard major catch from Lulay, the 24th straight game with a TD pass for the Lion pivot, the second longest streak in CFL history. McCallum converted with 2:57 left and the Saskatchewan lead was down to 6, at 20-14. Just when things were starting to get nervous, Greg Carr used all of his 6'6" frame to reach up and grab a 46 yard touchdown pass from Durant underneath the goal posts. DeAngelis converted and the Roughriders were up by 13 at 27-14, with 2:11 to go in regulation time. BC wouldn't quit however, with Lulay firing away to quickly get his team into scoring position. Iannuzzi would haul in a 14 yard pass from Lulay in the left side of the endzone for the touchdown. McCallum converted and the Lions were still breathing, climbing to within 6 at 27-21, with 1:18 yet to play. Taj Smith would muff the short kick and the ball would deflect out of bound off Anton McKenzie, giving BC the ball at 55. One bomb down the right side fell incomplete, the Lions took a procedure penalty, another deep ball down the right side fell uncaught, then, under heavy pressure, Lulay threw a flutterer that was intercepted by Chris McKenzie at the Saskatchewan 26. After a 6 yard run, BC called their second half timeout, only to watch Kory Sheets run up the middle for a huge first down. Durant would then take a knee three times to run out the clock and help the Riders escape with the 27-21 win.

For Saskatchewan, Darian Durant was 26-of-34 passing for 371 yards, 3 touchdowns and 1 interception. Weston Dressler caught 9 passes for 160 yards and 2 touchdowns, Greg Carr caught a 46 yard touchdown pass, Kory Sheets rushed 17 times for 103 yards, Sandro DeAngeles kicked a field goal and 3 converts, Chris Milo punted 7 times for A 44.3 yard average with 3 punt singles, Joe Lobendahn had 6 tackles and Chris McKenzie and Shomari Williams each intercepted a pass. For the Lions, Travis Lulay was 19-of-36 passing for 232 yards, 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. Marco Iannuzzi caught 3 balls for 49 yards and 2 touchdowns, Paul McCallum kicked 2 field goals, 2 converts and punted 8 times for a 47 yard average, with one punt single.

The Riders had 21 first downs, 115 yards rushing, 371 passing and 471 yards total offense. They turned the ball over once, were penalized 5 times for 80 yards and held the ball for 31:51. BC had 18 first downs, 102 yards rushing and 232 passing for 334 total yards. They turned the ball over 3 times, were penalized 7 times for 50 yards and held the ball for 28:09.

With the win, Saskatchewan improves to 7-6, ahead of a Monday, October 8th game in Toronto against the Argonauts. Kickoff is set for 4:30pm EDT on 620 CKRM and the Rider Radio Network, with Rod Pedersen and Carm Carteri calling the action.
