Kahut field goal wins Sun Bowl for Beavers

It's not unheard of for a field goal to decide the outcome of a college football game. But when that deciding field goal is the only score of the game, that is unusual. That was the case today, as Justin Kahut's 44 yard field goal late in the first half was the only scoring of the day, in Oregon State's 3-0 victory over the Pitt Panthers in the 75th edition of the Brut Sun Bowl at El Paso, Texas.

Both teams had a lot of trouble moving the ball in the first quarter, as windy conditions played havoc with the passes thrown by both teams quarterback. Finally, late in the second half, the Beavers moved the ball deep into Pitt territory. After the drive stalled, Kahut got his chance and converted from 44 yards out with 2:24 remaining in the first half, giving Oregon State a 3-0 lead. The Beavers had another chance to score, but Lyle Moevao was intercepted in the endzone with 10 seconds left, keeping the score at 3-0 Oregon State, as the first half ended.

In the second half, the wind died down, but both teams played solid defense, stifiling the offenses on both sides of the ball. Kahut missed a 37 yard fieldgoal halfway through the third quarter, after the Beavers had had a first and goal just inside the Panthers 5 yard line. Pitt's best chance to score came with just under 3 minutes remaining in the 4th quarter, but Connor Lee barely missed wide right on a 57 yard field goal attempt. Johnny Hekker pinned the Panthers back at their own 11 with 64 seconds left. Pitt was able to advance the ball out to their own 49 with 11 seconds left, but Oregon State's Slade Norris sacked Panthers Quarterback Pete Bostick to run out the clock, preserving the Beavbers 3-0 win.

Moevao was effective at times throwing the ball for the Beavers, completing 21 of 42 passes for 194 yards, no touchdowns and 2 interceptions. Johnny Hekker, voted one of the players of the game, punted 10 times for a 45.3 yard average, downing the ball inside the 20 five times. Sammie Stroughter caught 6 passes for 91 yards, Jeremy Francis rushed 15 times for 75 yards. For Pitt, Bill Stull was ineffective, completing just 7 of 24 passes for 51 yards, while getting sacked 3 times. Bostick came on in relief in the 4th quarter, completing 2 of 4 passes for 34 yards, while getting sacked twice.

Oregon State coach Mike Riley won his fifth straight bowl game in command of the Beavers and is now 8-0 all time in bowl games, including a 3-0 mark as offensive coordinator at Southern Cal. Oregon State finishes the season with a 9-4 record. The Panthers also finish at 9-4.

Beavers go bowling today

The Oregon State Beavers, minus the Rodgers brothers, both out with shoulder injuries, take on the Pitt Panthers today in the 75th edition of the Brut Sun Bowl, played in El Paso, Texas.

The Beavers enter today's game with a 2008 record of 8-4, and a Pac-10 Conference record of 7-2. The Pitt Panthers are 9-3 overall, 5-2 in the Big East Conference. Pittsburgh has won the only meeting between the two schools, a 38-13 win in the Insight Bowl at Phoenix in 2002.

The Beavers are led by Quarterback Lyle Moevao, who has passed for 2,341 yards and 19 touchdowns this season. LeSean McCoy leads Pittsburgh with 284 carries for 1,403 yards, while Quarterback Bill Stull has passed for 2,304 yards and 9 touchdowns.

After going 28 consecutive years without a winning season, Oregon State is playing in their 8th bowl game in the past 10 years. Since returning as Head Coach of the Beavers, Mike Riley has won four straight bowl games. Riley recently signed a contract extension as Beavers Coach, keeping him in Orange and Black through 2015.

The game can be heard around the Beavers Sports Network and flagship station CBS has the telecast of today's game, beginning at 1:00p.m. CST.

2008 Year End Appeal

As the year winds down, it is a good time to reflect on the past year and look forward to the future. This past year has brought many hardships on people and the uncertain economy has us all very cautious about the coming New Year. At the Colon Cancer Alliance (CCA) we take this into consideration as we move forward. But colorectal cancer continues to affect people at all times of the year and it remains the number two cancer killer, taking as many lives as breast cancer and AIDS combined.

This past year has seen some significant changes in the field of colorectal cancer. We are now able to know ahead of time which patients will or will not respond to an entire class of drugs for colorectal cancer. New advances in managing tumors in the liver have changed the way we talk about metastatic disease. New screening techniques have now been approved, offering choices that were not available just a few months ago.

New approaches can offer life and hope, but many patients find out about them too late. We are committed to being sure that every patient has the best chance to live longer and better. And we are pleased to report since CCA started 10 years ago, people with this disease are living longer and better than ever. But we can't do it alone. We need your support to make this possible.

Our awareness campaign has reached new heights with the launch of the Dress in Blue Campaign that will take place this coming March and the Undy 5000 5K run/walk. Thousands of supporters--like you, have participated in, or donated to the Undy 5000 walks to raise awareness of colorectal cancer. We are rapidly expanding the Undy 5000 for 2009, and we hope we can count on your participation and support. The Undy will return to Philadelphia, Dallas and Phoenix. First annual races are slated in Detroit, Denver, St. Louis and we will shortly announce a California location. Stay tuned for announcements of other cities which will host these energizing events in 2009.

CCA is reaching more patients than ever before. We are getting more calls to our toll-free Help Line. We have more volunteers, more Buddies and we are bringing back our popular regional conferences to ensure that patients and their families have the best and latest information about treating colorectal cancer. Finally, we are expanding our ever growing local chapters to help spread the word about this disease and bring CCA's mission to the local level. Now we need your help to ensure these programs can keep growing. Please make your end-of-year donation to help us in our efforts to inform every patient of the latest and best ways to manage their disease.

Thank you very much for your past and future support of CCA, and we wish you and your loved ones a safe and Happy Holiday.

Warmest regards,

Your friends at the CCA

PS. As you look forward to the New Year, please check our website for the latest information and events at You can sign up for our newsletters and communicate online with others in the CCA community. And, you can make your tax-deductible year end donation there too. Thank you.
