Stamps squeak by Riders

Regina, Saskatchewan -- The Calgary Stampeders remained perfect on the road in 2011 with a 22-18 win over the Saskatchewan Roughriders in front of a sell-out crowd of 30,048 at Mosaic Stadium in Regina, Saskatchewan.

After the two teams battled back and forth defensively to start the game, the Stampeders got on the board first on a drive that was highlited by a 32 yard pass catch by Jabari Arthur. Rene Paredes capped it off with a 34 yard field goal with 3:34 left in the opening quarter for a 3-0 lead.

They would add a major early in the second on an 8 yard scoring scramble by Calgary pivot Henry Burris. Paredes converted with 12:38 to go in the half, extending the lead to 10-0. The Roughriders finally got untracked, thanks to a 48 yard punt return by Brandon West. It would take Saskatchewan 3 plays to go the remaining 33 yards, with Darian Durant dashing up the middle for the final 9 yards. Eddie Johnson converted, pulling the Riders within 3 at 10-7 with 7:40 to go until two quarter time. Johnson would cut the deficit to 10-8 just over three minutes later thanks to a 54 yard punt single. Poor clock management late gave the Stamps one more chance to end the first half and they took advantage, getting a 45 yard field goal by Paredes on the half's final play, giving Calgary a five-point lead, 13-8.

Saskatchewan took their first home field lead of 2011, as Durant found Weston Dressler in double coverage for a 58 yard major score. Johnson's convert put the Riders on top 15-13, just over one minute into the second half. Johnson would concede a safety touch with 10:40 left in the third, tying the game, 15-15. Then, just 2:09 later, Paredes booted a 32 yard field goal, putting the Stampeders back on top, 18-15. Paredes would miss a 32 yard field goal with 4:23 to go in the third, boosting the Calgary lead to 19-15.

Saskatchewan moved into scoring position late in the third, but after a drop by Jason Clermont in the endzone on a difficult catch, had to settle for Johnson's 20 yard field goal 13 seconds into the fourth, drawing to within one, at 19-18. Both teams played solid defense, but another field goal by Paredes, his fourth of the game, from 47 yards out with 4:10 to play in regulation time, increased the Calgary lead to 22-18. The Stamps would allow the Riders just one first down before forcing a punt, then didn't give the ball back until there were just 11 seconds left. Saskatchewan could do nothing offensively from there and fell to 0-3 at home in 2011 with the 4 point loss, 22-18.

For Calgary, Henry Burris was 24-for-36 passing for 255 yards and 1 interception, while rushing 4 times for 47 yards and 1 touchdown. Nik Lewis caught 6 balls for 90 yards and Rene Paredes was 4-for-5 on field goals, while also kicking 1 convert and 1 missed field goal single. For the Riders, Darian Durant was 16-for-28 passing for 215 yards and 1 touchdown, while rushing 2 times for 10 yards and 1 touchdown. Weston Dressler had 6 catches for 103 yards and 1 touchdown, Hugh Charles, filling in for the banged up Wes Cates, rushed 11 times for 48 yards. Kicker Eddie Johnson had a big game, kicking 1 field goal, 1 convert and 1 punt single, punting 10 times for a 44.6 yard average with a long of 64 yards and boomed 5 kickoffs for a 65.6 yard average.

With the win, the Stampeders improve to 3-2 on the year, with all 3 wins coming on the road. Saskatchewan, losing for the third time in as many home games, fall to 1-4. The Riders hit the road next Friday, August 5th, to play the 0-5 BC Lions at Empire Field in Vancouver, BC. Rod Pedersen and Carm Carteri call all the action on 620 CKRM and the Rider Radio Network, with kickoff set for 10:30pm EDT. Calgary is home against 3-2 Hamilton this coming Saturday, August 6th, at 9:30pm EDT.

SEATTLE --  Alex Cobb has seen enough of Mariners rookie Dustin Ackley.
"He's battled me well for two years now going back to Double-A and the Fall League," Cobb said. "He must just see me well, but I've always had a little trouble with him."
Saturday afternoon brought Tampa Bay's 23-year-old right-hander a haunting reminder of that fact.
Ackley hit a two-run homer off Cobb in the first inning and in the sixth he doubled with one out then scored on Mike Carp's single for what turned out to be the winning run in a 3-2 Mariners win over the Rays at Safeco Field with 24,985 watching.
In defeat, the Rays moved to 55-51 on the season while having their two-game winning streak snapped.

CINCINNATI --
For whatever reason, whether it's coincidence or something more tangible, the Giants simply don't play well against the Cincinnati Reds.
Sauntering into Great American Ball Park after subduing the formidable Philadelphia Phillies twice in a row, San Francisco has dropped the first two games of this series to the Reds, including Saturday night's error-plagued 7-2 decision.
The Giants have lost 15 of their last 25 games against Cincinnati since 2008. They also sealed their first series loss since the A's swept them June 17-19 in Oakland. Since then, the Giants had won eight series and split two.

CLERMONT, Ind. -- Calm, droning racing wasn't getting it done for Brad Keselowski in Saturday night's Kroger 200 Nationwide Series race at Lucas Oil Raceway. The defending series champion needed a bit of mayhem, and when he got that late in the race, it resulted in his second victory of the season.

Keselowski, a non-factor through the middle portion of an atypically unremarkable race at the .686-mile track, jumped ahead of Ricky Stenhouse Jr. on a green-white-checkered restart and cruised to a .987-second victory. The race went four laps beyond its scheduled 200.

"It's a very special win being from Michigan," Keselowski said. "I've been coming to this race track for years. I've been to Victory Lane as a team guy and a mechanic but never a driver. It's so special to win here and win here in a Dodge."

The battle for second place was so close that NASCAR officials had to review video. Several minutes after the race ended, second place was taken from Stenhouse and given to James Buescher, who had finished second in Friday night's Camping World Truck Series race at the track.

SEATTLE --  Maybe the Rays finally went far enough West for good things to start happening.

After finding frustration in Kansas City and Oakland on the first two legs of a 10-game road trip, Tampa Bay unpacked its bats in Seattle, unleashing an eight-run second inning during an 8-0 win in the Emerald City.

The Rays moved to 55-50 on the season while gaining ground on first-place Boston in the American League East and Wild-Card-leading New York, leaving Tampa Bay 9 1/2 and 7 games back, respectively, in both races. Tampa Bay is now 3-5 on the road trip, so it has a chance to break even with wins on Saturday and Sunday before heading back to Tropicana Field to begin a three-game series against Toronto on Tuesday night.

"He's the only guy I don't want [to see] in that situation," Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval said in a grudging tribute to his ex-teammate.

PHILADELPHIA -- Those who rely on win-loss records will point to the Major League standings and insist that the Philadelphia Phillies remain baseball's best team.
But when recent history, head-to-head matchups and sheer competitiveness are considered, it's easy to conclude that the Giants are currently superior to the perennially elite Phillies.
San Francisco received six shutout innings from Tim Lincecum, an inspiring defensive play from Carlos Beltran in his Giants debut and sufficient offense in Thursday night's 4-1 triumph. The reigning World Series champions not only captured the three-game series, two games to one, but also achieved some worthy milestones.

Rolston Named Head Coach for Rochester Americans

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Ron Rolston, who has spent the last seven years as a head coach at USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program, has resigned to accept a position as head coach of the Rochester Americans, the American Hockey League affiliate of the Buffalo Sabres.

"Ron has had a tremendous influence on the continued rise of American players through seven successful years at the NTDP,” said Jim Johannson, assistant executive director of hockey operations at USA Hockey. "He's going to a wonderful organization in Buffalo and we know Ron will be an outstanding coach at the professional level. We wish him and his family nothing but the very best."

The longest-tenured and most decorated coach in the history of USA Hockey's National Team Development Program, Ron Rolston guided U.S. squads to championships in three international tournaments in 2010-11, including a gold-medal performance at the 2011 International Ice Hockey Federation World Men's U18 Championship. Rolston, who had previously led the U.S. Men's National Under-18 team to a gold medal in the 2005 and 2009 IIHF World Men's U18 Championship and a silver medal at the 2007 event, helped Team USA collect its third straight world title in 2010-11.

In addition, Rolston's U.S. National Under-18 Team posted a 12-9-1-2 (W-L-OTL-SOL) record in United States Hockey League play in 2010-11, helping the NTDP reach the USHL postseason for the first time.

"Ron has done a tremendous job," said Scott Monaghan, senior director of operations at the NTDP. "Not only is he an excellent coach, but he's a great person too. To say we'll miss him is an understatement."

A nationwide search for Rolston’s replacement is underway.

It cannot be left in orbit, it's too complex, too heavy an object, it can leave behind lots of rubbish."

Winnipeg mourns loss of Coach Richard Harris

THE CANADIAN PRESS

WINNIPEG -- Richard Harris, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers assistant head coach and defensive line coach, died Tuesday afternoon after collapsing at Canad Inns Stadium. He was 63.

A league source requesting anonymity said Harris collapsed in his office and was rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Harris was in his sixth season with the CFL club.

Bombers president Jim Bell confirmed Harris's death.

"This has struck our entire organization from the top down,'' he said in a statement. "We are all in a state of shock and first and foremost would like to express our deepest sympathies to his family.

"The Winnipeg Football Club has lost not only a great coach, but an even better man.''

Harris joined the Bombers in 2006 as their defensive line coach and was appointed assistant head coach prior to the start of this season.

Winnipeg's defence has played a major role in the club's resurgence this year. The Bombers (3-1) are tied with Montreal atop the East Division standings after posting a league-worst 4-14 record in 2010.

The club's defence is allowing a league-low 293 yards per game and is ranked second in fewest points allowed (19.2 per game). And the defensive line has terrorized rival quarterbacks, posting a league-high 15 sacks.

Harris arrived in Winnipeg after one season with the Ottawa Renegades as their defensive line coach. He had the same role for four years before that with the B.C. Lions.

Wally Buono, the Lions coach and general manager, appeared shaken by the news. Harris served as B.C.'s defensive line coach for Buono's first two years in Vancouver.

"When somebody passes away it's always shocking,'' said Buono, who underwent heart bypass surgery in 2004. "Richard was a good man. Just the fact he's gone is almost discouraging.''

In 2000, Harris was head coach of the Portland Prowlers of the Indoor Professional Football League. And he won three semi-pro championships as head coach in the Northwest Football League, with the Eastside Express in 1989 and the Pudget Sound Jets in 1994 and 1995.

Harris, a defensive lineman, spent eight seasons in the NFL after being picked fifth overall in the 1971 draft by the Philadelphia Eagles. He was all-rookie that year.

He played three seasons with the Eagles before joining the Chicago Bears for two years. Harris finished his career by playing three seasons with the Seattle Seahawks.

Harris played at Grambling State University under legendary head coach Eddie Robinson.

He is survived by wife Tami and children Kimberly, Chianti, Jennifer and Michael.
