USA Hockey's Danton Cole to be Honored by Alma Mater, Michigan State
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Danton Cole, who is in his third season as a head coach at USA Hockey's National Team Development Program, will receive the 2013 Distinguished Spartan Award at the Michigan State University men's ice hockey team banquet on April 17. Cole was a four-year letter winner at MSU (1985-89) and went on to help the New Jersey Devils win its first Stanley Cup in 1995.

Cole is currently the head coach of the U.S. National Under-17 Team and led the squad to a first-place finish at the 2012 Four Nations Tournament in Monthey, Switzerland.
In 2011-12, Cole guided the U.S. to the gold medal at the 2012 International Ice Hockey Federation Men's Under-18 World Championship in the Czech Republic. The team went undefeated in the tournament (6-0-0-0) and gave up just four goals in the event.

NTDP Announces First Seven Commitments for 2013-14 Season

Five Forwards and Two Defensemen Named to U.S. National Under-17 Team

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Forwards Christian Fischer (Wayne, Ill.), Jordan Greenway (Potsdam, N.Y.), Luke Kirwan (DeWitt, N.Y.), Matthew Tkachuk (St. Louis, Mo.) and Brendan Warren (Carleton, Mich.), along with defensemen Nicholas Boka (Plymouth, Mich.) and Zach Werenski (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) will join USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program for the 2013-14 season it was announced today. The players, all from the 1997 birth year, will compete as members of the U.S. National Under-17 Team.

Fischer averaged just over a point per game for the Chicago Mission Midget Minor program in 2012-13. He recorded 26 points (12-14) in 25 contests and is verbally committed to play college hockey for the University of Notre Dame.

Greenway skated for Shattuck-St. Mary's School in Faribault, Minn. during the 2012-13 season and amassed 60 points (22-38) in 43 games played.

Kirwan totaled 16 points (11-5) in 34 regular-season games with the Islanders Hockey Club of the Eastern Junior Hockey League. He also tallied three goals and registered one assist in four playoff games.

Tkachuk skated with the St. Louis Blues Midget Minor program in 2012-13. He amassed 82 points (25-57) in 41 regular-season games. Tkachuk, who is verbally committed to play college hockey at the University of Notre Dame, also totaled 13 points (4-9) in five playoff games.

Warren recently completed the 2012-13 season for the Compuware Midget Minor (Mich.) program. He had 51 points (20-31) in 54 games played. He is verbally committed to play college hockey at the University of Michigan.

Boka skated in 50 games for the Compuware Midget Minor (Mich.) program and totaled 30 points (12-18) in 2012-13. He is verbally committed to play college hockey at Michigan State University.

Werenski skated in 28 games for the Little Caesars Midget Major program in 2012-13. He scored seven goals and added 14 assists as part of the High Performance Hockey League.

NOTES: The 2013-14 U.S. National Under-17 Team will play in the United States Hockey League, the top junior league in the U.S. It will also compete in three international competitions, including the 2014 World Under-17 Challenge in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia ... Matthew Tkachuk is the son of U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame member and four-time Olympian (1992, 1998, 2002, 2006), Keith Tkachuk, who spent 19 seasons in the National Hockey League.

Sometimes your child's love can hurt...badly. A 50-year old Kalamazoo, Michigan, woman was on the receiving end of a 5-year-old's hug that landed both her and the child in the hospital. The woman was standing by a second floor window at when a 5-year old ran straight at her for a hug. The weight and momentum of the child threw the lady off balance and out the window. Both were rushed to the hospital.

Tampa, FL. -- The Tampa Bay Lightning named Jon Cooper the franchise's eighth head coach Monday night.

Cooper, 45, was coaching Tampa Bay's affiliate in the American Hockey League, the Syracuse Crunch. Syracuse currently has the best record in the AHL at 39-18-3-5.

U.S. National Sled Hockey Team Training in Buffalo This Week
Team USA to Defend Its 2012 World Championship in Two Weeks in Korea
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- The 2012-13 U.S. National Sled Hockey Team is training this week (Tues., March 26-Sat., March 30) at Northtown Center at Amherst in Williamsville, N.Y. The camp is the final stage of preparation before Team USA defends its 2012 gold medal at the 2013 International Paralympic Committee Ice Sledge Hockey World Championship April 12-20 in Goyang City, Korea.
The 2012-13 U.S. National Sled Hockey Team has won 10 of its 12 international games this season en route to a pair of tournament championships. In December, Team USA captured the 2012 World Sledge Hockey Challenge in Calgary, Alta. The U.S. avenged a preliminary round loss to Canada by beating the tournament host in the championship game. In January, the U.S. held the USA Hockey Sled Cup in Indian Trail, N.C., and won each of its four games, including a pair of victories against Korea. Most recently, the U.S. posted two wins in three games against Canada Feb. 14-16 in Rockland, Ont.

Jeff Sauer (Madison, Wis.), former men's ice hockey head coach at Colorado College and the University of Wisconsin, is the second-year head coach of the U.S. National Sled Hockey Team.
