U.S. National Junior Team Drops 4-1 Decision to Canada in IIHF World Junior Championship Semifinals

Team USA to Face Sweden Wednesday in the Bronze-Medal Game

BUFFALO, N.Y. - Chris Brown (Flower Mound, Texas/Univ. of Michigan) scored the lone goal for Team USA, as the U.S. National Junior team dropped a 4-1 decision to Canada in the semifinal round of the 2011 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship before a sellout crowd of 18,690 at HSBC Arena.

The U.S. will play for a medal for the eighth time in nine years when it faces Sweden Wednesday (Jan. 5) at 3:30 p.m. EST in the bronze-medal game.

"Our players are working hard as individuals, but we didn't come together as a team," said Keith Allain, head coach of the U.S. National Junior Team. "We'll have a good practice tomorrow and will prepare to play for bronze on Wednesday."

Team USA fell behind less than three minutes into the game. Goalie Jack Campbell (Port Huron, Mich./Windsor Spitfires) kept the U.S. close, making 25 saves in the first two periods and 37 saves overall. But Canada eventually built a 4-0 lead six minutes into the final frame.

Brown gave the U.S. life with a power-play goal midway through the third period. A shot by Jeremy Morin (Auburn, N.Y./Rockford IceHogs) hit a stick and bounced towards Brown, who knocked the puck out of the air and over the blocker of Canada goalie Mark Visentin. Team USA, however, could get no closer and dropped its first game of the tournament.

Wednesday afternoon's bronze-medal game will be televised live on the NHL Network U.S. and streamed live on USAHockey.FASTHockey.com.

U.S. National Under-17 Team Edges Team Pacific, 6-5, in Semifinals of World Under-17 Hockey Challenge

Kerdiles Scores Game Winner, Adds One Assist as Team USA Advances to Finals

WINNIPEG, Man. - Nicolas Kerdiles (Irvine, Calif.) scored the game winning goal and added an assist as the U.S. National Under-17 Team edged Canada's Team Pacific, 6-5, in overtime this evening at the MTS Centre in the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge semifinals. The win advances Team USA to the gold medal game.

"The guys did not let up and I'm glad on how they reacted to adversity," said Danton Cole, head coach of the U.S. National Under-17 Team. "Anywhere worth going to isn't easy and we have one more game to go."

Team Pacific opened the game on a quick score at 1:13 of the first period. The U.S. responded with a tally by Hartman, when he swept the puck to the front of the goal, looking for teammate Kerdiles. The puck caromed off a defender and into the net to knot the game at 1-1.

Team USA took a 2-1 lead when a Jacob Trouba (Rochester, N.Y.) powerplay blast from inside the blue line found the back of the net. Thomas Di Pauli (Woodridge, Ill.) passed the puck to Trouba, who found Matt Grzelcyk (Charlestown, Mass.) along the right sideboards. Grzelcyk returned the pass back to Trouba who fired the puck home.

Stefan Matteau (Chicago, Ill.) added to the U.S. lead after a great effort to keep the puck in the zone by Connor Carrick (Orland Park, Ill.). Carrick zipped a pass to Quentin Shore (Denver, Colo.). who dropped the puck to Matteau. Matteau snapped a quick wrist shot past Team Pacific goaltender Mackenzie Skapski. Off a two-on-one break, Kerdiles launched a quick shot off of Skapski and Hartman backhanded the rebound in. Team USA entered the first intermission up, 4-1.

Trouba and Grzelcyk connected once more on the powerplay at 12:29 in the middle frame. Grzelcyk launched a quick wrist shot that found an opening between the pads of Pacific goaltender Devon Fordyce, who was inserted into the game at the start of the second period. Both Grzelcyk and Trouba had one goal and two assists in the contest. Pacific notched two powerplay goals late in the stanza to close the gap on Team USA, but the U.S. led 5-3 after 40 minutes of play.

The third period saw two more goals notched by Pacific, mounting a comeback to tie the game at fives goals each. Heading into overtime, the U.S. looked to put the pressure back on Team Pacific. The U.S. ousthot Pacific, 6-2, in the overtime period and at 7:24, Kerdiles scored the game winner for Team USA.

Jared Rutledge (Chicago, Ill.) made 19 saves for Team USA in the win, while Skapski and Fordyce combined to stop 28 shots for Team Pacific in the loss.

The U.S. National Under-17 Team next skates in the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge finals against the winner of tonight's Ontario - Quebec matchup. Puck drop is scheduled for tomorrow (Jan. 4) at 7:30 p.m. CT. The game will be held at the MTS Centre in Winnipeg, Man.

Yale University Unanimous No. 1 in USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Men's College Hockey Poll

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Yale University is the unanimous No. 1 in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Men's College Hockey Poll as it returns from a one-week hiatus. The Bulldogs, who earned a victory over College of the Holy Cross last weekend and now boast a 12-1-0 record, collected 510 points and all 34 first-place votes to claim the top spot for the fourth week in a row.

The University of North Dakota (467) advances three places to No. 2 with a win over then-No. 3 University of Minnesota Duluth, while Boston College (428) moves up one place to No. 3 after defeating Colgate University and Mercyhurst College. The University of New Hampshire (404) claims the No. 4 spot following an overtime loss to St. Lawrence University, while Minnesota Duluth rounds out the top five with 356 points.

NOTES: The Western Collegiate Hockey Association leads all conferences with five ranked teams, while Hockey East boasts four ranked programs, and the Central Collegiate Hockey Association and ECAC Hockey each have three ... A total of 22 teams received votes.

U.S. Women's National Under-18 Team Downs Japan, 7-1, at 2011 IIHF World Women's U18 Championship

Seven Different Players Score in Team USA Victory

STOCKHOLM - Seven different players scored for the U.S. Women's National Under-18 Team in a 7-1 victory over Japan at the 2011 International Ice Hockey Federation World Women's U18 Championship here tonight at Stora Mossen Arena. Team USA is undefeated (2-0-0-0) in the tournament and will close out the preliminary round on Tuesday (Jan. 4) against Sweden.

"Playing against an honest and hardworking team like Japan, it is important that we bring our best," said Jodi McKenna, head coach for Team USA. "Again, we did a very good job and worked hard on both sides of the puck. It was great to see that we're getting a lot of contribution from the entire lineup."

Japan struck first, using an early power-play opportunity to tally the first goal against the Americans of the tournament. Ayaka Toko shot the puck and used a bounce off the end boards to backhand it past U.S. netminder Shenae Lundberg (Peterborough, N.H.) at 6:18 of the opening period.

Team USA responded less than a minute later to tie the game at 1-1 when Emily Field (Littleton, Mass.) tipped Courtney Burke's (Albany, N.Y.) point shot at 7:15. Emily Pfalzer (Getzville, N.Y.) gave the U.S. the lead for good at 18:50, as her slap shot from the top of the right faceoff circle found an opening through traffic as Japan goaltender Shizuka Takahashi slid left.

The U.S. opened its lead to 4-1 in the second frame, starting with Sydney Daniels (Southwick, Mass.) tipping an Amanda Boulier (Watertown, Conn.) shot at 3:47. Alex Carpenter (North Reading, Mass.) capped off the period with a power-play goal at the 11:05 mark.

In the final period, linemates Shiann Darkangelo (Brighton, Mich.) and Layla Marvin (Warroad, Minn.) scored :16 apart, at 5:35 and 5:51, to make it 6-1. Milician McMillen (St. Paul, Minn.) closed out the game with a slap shot from the point on the power play at 16:18 to account for the 7-1 final score.

Lundberg made six saves in net for the U.S., while Takahashi and Ai Tokoro combined for 69 saves for Japan.

U.S. National Under-17 Team Trips Up Team Quebec, 5-2, in Final Round-Robin Contest of World Under-17 Hockey Challenge

Hartman and Matteau Notch Goal and Assist; Team USA Earns Number One Seed

WINNIPEG, Man. - Ryan Hartman (West Dundee, Ill.) and Stefan Matteau (Chicago, Ill.) scored one goal and added an assist each as the U.S. National Under-17 Team tripped up Canada's Team Quebec, 5-2, here this evening at the MTS Iceplex in World Under-17 Hockey Challenge action. Team USA finishes first in Pool A.

"We came out and played disciplined hockey in the first two periods," said Danton Cole, head coach of the U.S. National Under-17 Team. "We survived a tough third period and got what we wanted, the first seed in our pool."

Team USA found itself in unfamiliar territory as Quebec scored first on a five-on-three powerplay, marking the first time the U.S. fell behind in the tournament. Despite still being down a player, Team USA struck back. With a defender draped all over him, Hartman skated in and one-handed the puck past Quebec goaltender, Alex Dubeau. Quentin Shore (Denver, Colo.) and Collin Olson (Apple Valley, Minn.) collected assists on the shorthanded marker.

The U.S. cashed in on its own powerplay opportunity at 12:46 of the first frame, taking a 2-1 lead. Seth Jones (Plano, Texas) ripped a shot just under the goal post and handcuffed Dubeau. Dakota Mermis (Charlestown, Mass.) and Henrik Samuelsson (Scottsdale, Ariz.) earned assists on the play. Before time expired in the period, Matteau made a strong play, moving to the net and backhanding a pass to Miles Koules (Los Angeles, Calif.). Koules knocked the feed to the back of net for the goal. Matteau recorded an assist on the play, as did Samuelsson.

Matteau capitilized on great positioning and picked up the puck when a Quebec defender lost his footing. Matteau skated in from the left side of the goal and pulled the puck in to his backhand for the goal. Hartman assisted on the play for his second point of the game. With time winding down on the second period, Dubeau fumbled the puck behind the Quebec goal and Thomas Di Pauli (Woodridge, Ill.) scooped it up for the empty net tally.

In the final frame, the U.S. found itself down a man for a majority of the stanza as a number of penalties were called against Team USA. Despite giving up one goal on a rebound shot by Quebec, the U.S. held strong and claimed the 5-2 victory.

Olson made 22 saves for Team USA in the victory, while Dubeau and Francois Tremblay combined to stop 35 shots for Team Quebec in the loss.

The U.S. National Under-17 Team next skates in the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge semifinals against Pool B's second-seeded team (the loser of tonight's Pacific - Ontario game). Puck drop is scheduled for tomorrow (Jan. 3) at 3:00 p.m. CT. The game will be held at the MTS Centre in Winnipeg, Man.

NOTES: Entering today's game, the U.S. led all teams in the tournament with 21 goals scored for. The five goals scored against Quebec gives Team USA 26 goals scored in four games ... U.S. National Under-17 Team Downs Team Atlantic, 12-1, in World Under-17 Hockey Challenge Action

Carrick and Koules Register Four Points; Team USA Earns Berth in Semifinal

WINNIPEG, Man. - Connor Carrick (Orland Park, Ill.) and Miles Koules (Los Angeles, Calif.) each scored a goal and recorded three assists as the U.S. National Under-17 Team downed Canada's Team Atlantic, 12-1, here this evening at the MTS Iceplex in World Under-17 Hockey Challenge action. With the win, Team USA earns a berth in the semifinal.

"We moved the puck sharply and skated well without it on our powerplays and that was key," said Danton Cole, head coach of the U.S. National Under-17 Team. "Killing that five-on-three gave us some early momentum and we built off that."

Team USA opened the game by putting pressure on the Atlantic goaltender, Jacob Brennan, early and often. Two consecutive penalties on the U.S. put the pressure on special teams as it played two players down. Team USA killed both penalties and the momentum shifted back in its favor.

Henrik Samuelsson (Scottsdale, Ariz.) continued his strong start to the tournament when he sniped a quick shot from the bottom of the left faceoff circle. The powerplay tally was assisted by Brady Skjei (Lakeville, Minn.) and Carrick. Just 20 seconds later, on a delayed penalty call against Atlantic, Frankie Vatrano (East Longmeadow, Mass.) pushed the puck up the ice and netted the second U.S. goal. Koules and Samuelsson earned assists on the play.

Atlantic answered with a goal of its own to cut the U.S. lead in half at 10:26 of the first period. Kyle Osterberg (Lakeville, Minn.) skated around the goal and found Ryan Hartman (West Dundee, Ill.) with a cross-ice feed to give Team USA another two goal cushion. Hartman one-timed the pass past Brennan for the score. In the final minute of the first frame, Stefan Matteau (Chicago, Ill.) caused a turnover that led to a scoring opportunity for the U.S. Matteau skated towards the goal and shielded the puck from a defender and with his back to the net, found Thomas Di Pauli (Woodridge, Ill.). Di Pauli wristed a shot home, putting Team USA up 4-1 after the first period.

The second period was dominated by Team USA as they netted six goals, three on the powerplay. Osterberg scored at 9:27 when he banged the puck in the net at close range. Nicolas Kerdiles (Irvine, Calif.) and Seth Jones (Plano, Texas) collected assists on the powerplay tally. Just over a minute later, Matthew Lane (Rochester, N.Y.) gave the U.S. a five goal cushion when he netted the first of his two goals. Thomas Di Pauli (Woodridge, Ill.) assisted.

Koules joined the scoring parade at 11:38 in the middle frame, putting Team USA up 7-1. Skjei and Patrick Sieloff (Ann Arbor, Mich.) earned assists on the score. Jacob Trouba's (Rochester, Mich.) blast from just inside the blue line chased Atlantic goaltender Brennan, in favor of Brandon Whitney. The U.S. was not finished as they added two goals before time expired in the second period. The score after 40 minutes of play favored the U.S. by a score of 10-1.

Team USA held Atlantic to just three shots on goal in the final stanza and chipped in two goals as the U.S. cruised to victory, 12-1. For the game, the U.S. held Atlantic to 11 shots on goal while Team USA amassed 50 shots on the opposing goaltenders.

Jared Rutledge (Chicago, Ill.) made 10 saves for Team USA in the victory, while Brennan and Whitney combined to stop 38 shots for Team Atlantic in the loss.

The U.S. National Under-17 Team concludes round-robin play tomorrow (Jan. 2) when they faceoff against Canada's Team Quebec. Puck drop is set for 3 p.m. CT at the MTS Iceplex in Winnipeg, Man.

U.S. National Junior Team Edges Switzerland, 2-1, at the IIHF World Junior Championship

Team USA Advances to Semifinal Round as Group A's Top Seed

BUFFALO, N.Y. - Jack Campbell (Port Huron, Mich./Windsor Spitfires) made 25 saves and Mitch Callahan (Whittier, Calif./Kelowna Rockets) scored the game-winning goal, as the U.S. National Junior Team edged Switzerland here tonight, 2-1, in its fourth and final preliminary-round game of the 2011 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship.

Team USA finished in first place in Group A with a 3-1-0-0 (W-OTW-OTL-L) record, guaranteeing the United States a spot in the semifinal round. The U.S. will face the winner of the quarterfinal match-up between Canada and Switzerland on Monday (Jan. 3) at 7:30 p.m. EST.

"I thought our team defense was excellent tonight," said Keith Allain, head coach of the U.S. National Junior Team. "It helps to have Jack back there, and that gives us confidence moving forward."

Switzerland got on the board first, but Team USA tied the score, 1-1, midway through the first period. With the U.S. on the power play, Charlie Coyle (East Weymouth, Mass./Boston Univ.) threw a backhand pass from behind the net to Chris Kreider (Boxford, Mass./Boston College), who buried a shot low to the far post.

The U.S. scored the game-winning goal midway through the second period. With Team USA cycling the puck in Switzerland's zone, Callahan jammed the puck past Switzerland goalie Benjamin Conz on a wraparound attempt for his first goal of the tournament.

Despite Switzerland's efforts to even the score in the third, Campbell shut the door for his fourth win of the tournament. Meanwhile, Conz finished the night with 40 saves in a losing effort.

Team USA's semifinal game on Monday night will be televised on NHL Network U.S. and streamed live on USAHockey.FASTHockey.com.

NOTES: Ryan Bourque (Boxford, Mass./Quebec Remparts) was named Team USA's player of the game ... Team USA finished 1-for-3 on the power play, while Switzerland was 0-for-1 with the man advantage ... U.S. Women's National Under-18 Team Blanks Czech Republic, 11-0, in 2011 IIHF World Women's U18 Championship Opener

Pelkey Nets Hat Trick; Team USA Outshoots Czechs, 75-8

STOCKHOLM - Amanda Pelkey (Montpelier, Vt.) netted a hat trick in leading the U.S. Women's National Under-18 Team to an 11-0 victory over the Czech Republic in the opening game of the 2011 International Ice Hockey Federation World Women's U18 Championship here tonight at Stora Mossen Arena. Fourteen U.S. players factored in the scoring, with eight goal-scorers.

"Our team did a really good job of working hard and staying disciplined," said Jodi McKenna, head coach for Team USA. "We played well both offensively and defensively - it was a great start to the tournament."

Pelkey scored Team USA's first goal of the tournament at 6:12 of the opening frame when she skated in on the net from the end boards and slipped a backhanded shot past Czech netminder Veronika Hladikova. During a U.S. power play at 18:03, Paige Savage (Carrollton, Texas) found Alex Carpenter (North Reading, Mass.) on the doorstep and Carpenter one-timed a shot into the back of the net to double the U.S. advantage.

The U.S. extended its lead to 7-0 in the second period with five goals. Pelkey scored her second just :53 into the frame on a breakaway. Just over a minute later, Karley Sylvester (Warroad, Minn.) knocked one in during a scramble in front of the Czech net at 2:00. Hannah Brandt (Vadnais Heights, Minn.) and Sydney Daniels (Southwick, Mass.) tallied :29 apart, at 7:18 and 7:47, and Abby Ness (Roseau, Minn.) closed out the period scoring at 12:11.

In the third stanza, Pelkey completed her hat trick at 1:34 to put the U.S. up 8-0. Brandt then scored on the power play at 6:24 when she knocked in Michelle Picard's (Taunton, Mass.) rebound. Shiann Darkangelo (Brighton, Mich.) added a tally at 12:04 and Emily Pfalzer (Getzville, N.Y.) closed out the scoring with a shot from the top of the slot on the power play at 19:13.

Megan Miller (Long Grove, Ill.) stopped all eight shots she faced for the shutout, while Hladikova made 64 saves in the losing effort.

The U.S. returns to action tomorrow against Japan at 10 a.m. EST.
