The Saskatchewan Roughriders started slow again Saturday night, but came on strong and grabbed a 32-25 win over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats Saturday night in front of 23,108 fans at Ivor Wynne Stadium in Hamilton.

The Cats had the ball first and took just two plays to go 50 yards, getting a 41 yard catch and run from Dave Stalla, then a 9 yard Kevin Glenn to Matt Carter pass play for the major score. Sandro Deangelis kicked the extra point and with 1:18 gone, Hamilton had a 7-0 lead.

The Ti-Cats scored on their next possession, keyed by a 41 yard DeAndra Cobb run. Quinton Porter scored from a yard out and, with the convert from Deangelis, led 14-0 with 6:33 left in the first.

Deangelis then booted the ball into the endzone on a missed field goal for the single on their next possession, giving Hamilton a 15-0 lead with 2:17 still to play in the first quarter.

Saskatchewan finally got on the board early in the second, when Wes Cates finished off a 9 play, 75 yard drive by barreling in from 1 yard away. The convert from Congi was good, and with 12:19 to go 'til halftime, the Riders had cut their deficit to 8, at 15-7.

Saskatchewan climbed within a point seven minutes later, when Durant found Rob Bagg for a 70 yard touchdown strike. Congi converted and 5:07 remaining in the first half, the Riders were within a point, at 15-14.

With 2:18 left in the half, Deangelis connected on a 32 yard field goal giving Hamilton an 18-14 lead.

Then, in the closing moments of the first half, Durant hooked up with Weston Dressler for a 43 yard major score. The play withstood a Tider-Cats challenge, then Congi would add the convert with 1 second to go, putting Saskatchewan on top at the half, 21-18.

Hamilton regained the lead in the third. Glenn tossed a 10 yard touchdown pass to Marquay McDaniel and, with the convert from Deangelis, the Ti-Cats were back on top 25-21 with 7:20 still on the third quarter time clock.

The Roughriders then took over. Eddie Johnson kicked a 51 yard punt single with 4:35 left to cut the deficit to 25-22, and Congi would make good on a 35 yard field goal with 24 seconds to go in the third, tying the game 25-25.

The decisive score came with just under 8 minutes left in regulation time. Bagg's second touchdown catch of the night, a 19 yard scoring toss from Durant, accompanied by the Congi convert with 7:19 to play, put Saskatchewan up by 7. James Patrick then intercepted a pass near the goal line on the games' final play, giving the Riders their 32-25 win.

For Saskatchewan, Darian Durant was 23-of-31 passing for 418 yards, 3 touchdowns and 1 interception, Rob Bagg had 5 receptions for 119 yards and 2 touchdowns, Weston Dressler caught 7 balls for 139 yards and 1 touchdown, Wes Cates had 13 carries for 71 yards and 1 touchdown, Luca Congi kicked 1 field goal and 4 converts and Eddie Johnson added a punt single for the Riders. Kevin Glenn led Hamilton with 26-of-35 passing for 336 yards, 2 touchdowns and 1 interception, Marquay McDaniel and Matt Carter had 1 receiving touchdown each, Quinton Porter added a rushing touchdown and Sandro Deangelis booted 1 field goal, 3 converts and 1 single.

ST. PETERSBURG --  After jumping out to a quick lead they never relinquished, the Rays left little suspense in a 9-1 win over the Mariners on Saturday night. But there should be more than enough to go around Sunday.

Read the rest here.

Notes: James Shields (13-13, 4.96) starts today's series finale against the Mariners' Luke Franch (4-6, 4.23)....Shields needs 7 2/3 innings to reach 200 for the fourth consecutive year, and he is the only pitcher in Rays history with multiple 200-inning seasons. The right-hander would become one of seven pitchers with 200-plus innings in each of the past four years, joining Justin Verlander, CC Sabathia, Dan Haren, Roy Halladay, Matt Cain and Bronson Arroyo. "There's satisfaction just for the lone fact that I've stayed healthy all year, knock on wood," Shields said. "I've got two more starts left, but that's my main goal. That's been my No. 1 goal all year -- to stay healthy. I've had a bad year as far as my ERA goes. I have 13 wins right now, and if I can get these last two, that'll be 15. That'll be great. It'll beat my career high. But I'm not really focused in on that. The 200 innings, I'd like to do that every year."....The Rays have won seven of their first eight games in 2010 against the Mariners and have won the past four in a row.

U.S. National Under-18 Team Opens Preseason With 4-2 Win Over Youngstown

Grimaldi Scores Twice; Team USA Notches Two Power-Play Goals

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Rocco Grimaldi (Rossmoor, Calif.) netted two goals in the first period and Barrett Kaib (Upper St. Clair, Pa.) collected two assists, as the U.S. National Under-18 Team defeated the Youngstown Phantoms last Friday(September 17th), in a preseason contest at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Grimaldi gave the U.S. an early 1-0 lead, when he scored off a centering pass from Reid Boucher (Grand Ledge, Mich.) less than four minutes into the game. Youngstown evened the score, but Grimaldi answered back at the 14:22 mark of the first period with a power-play goal. Kaib sent the puck up to Grimaldi, who fired a shot past Youngstown goaltender Matthew O'Connor to give Team USA the 2-1 edge heading into the first intermission.

Cole Bardreau (Fairport, N.Y.) scored 6:49 into the second period to extend the U.S. lead to 3-1. Five minutes later, Adam Reid (Chino Hills, Calif.) notched a five-on-three power-play goal to finish off the scoring for Team USA. After Robbie Russo's (Westmont, Ill.) shot was blocked away, Reid knocked in the rebound for the three-goal advantage. Youngstown scored 13:45 into the third period, but the U.S. held on for the 4-2 victory.

Goaltenders John Gibson (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Matt McNeely (Burnsville, Minn.) combined to make 30 saves for Team USA in the win, while O'Connor stopped 36 shots for Youngstown in the loss.

The U.S. National Under-18 Team next travels to Sioux City, Iowa for the USHL Fall Classic, where they will face the Omaha Lancers (Sept. 23), Sioux City Musketeers (Sept. 24) and Waterloo Blackhawks (Sept. 25).

U.S. National Under-17 Team Falls to Youngstown, 4-2, in Exhibition

Jones and Vatrano Score First Goals for Team USA in Loss

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Seth Jones (Plano, Texas) and Frankie Vatrano (East Longmeadow, Mass.) scored their first goals of the season, but the U.S. National Under-17 Team fell to the Youngstown Phantoms, 4-2, at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube last Saturday(September 18th) in a United States Hockey League preseason contest.

After falling behind, 3-0, Team USA cut the Youngstown lead to two late in the second period when Jones broke free from a defender, charged to the net and scored.

Following a Youngstown third-period goal, the U.S. answered once again. Kyle Osterberg (Lakeville, Minn.) sent a pass to Miles Koules (Los Angeles, Calif.), who skated to the corner and drew defenders away from the front of the net. Koules found Vatrano alone in the slot to trim the Youngstown lead to 4-2.

Intense pressure applied by Team USA in the game's final minute led to a penalty shot after a Youngstown player covered the puck in his own crease. But the U.S. failed to capitalize and dropped its first game of the season.

Goaltenders Jared Rutledge (Skokie, Ill.) and Collin Olson (Apple Valley, Minn.) combined to make 21 saves for Team USA in the loss, while Matt Green stopped 44 shots for Youngstown in the win.

The U.S. National Under-17 Team will host the North American Hockey League's Traverse City North Stars next weekend (Sept. 24-25) in exhibition play. Team USA will kick off its USHL regular season against the Dubuque Fighting Saints (Oct. 9) at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube.

ST. PETERSBURG --  Four days of playing the Yankees in New York can take a toll on a team, both mentally and physically, to the point where a letdown by the Rays could have been expected on Friday.

Instead, fueled by a three-run fifth and an improved effort by Jeff Niemann, the Rays will end Friday in first place in the American League East after defeating the Mariners, 5-3, at Tropicana Field with 17,840 watching.

Read the rest here.

Notes: Matt Garza (14-9, 4.01) starts tonight for Tampa Bay against the Mariners' Doug Fister (6-12, 3.83)....Garza has a career-high 14 wins and is aiming to become the second pitcher in Rays history to reach 15, joining David Price, who has 17 this year. To do that he'll have to reverse his recent form. Garza is 0-2 with a 10.93 ERA in his last three starts and has allowed at least six runs in each of those outings. Before this stretch he hadn't allowed six runs in even two successive starts in his career. "He's going to be fine," Maddon said. "The velocity is good. Everything is good. (We're) just trying to encourage him to stay in his delivery [and] get into some better counts. He's been getting in a lot of bad counts lately. It's more of a command issue than anything. [He] just [needs to] get a little sharper with command, get in better counts, and he's going to be just fine." ... The Rays have scored 777 runs, second in the Majors to the Yankees, and are on pace for a club-record 823. They are averaging 5.08 runs per game, the most in club history.

Denver -- Tim Lincecum recorded his first Major League victory here. Friday, he complemented that with what likely was his most significant triumph as a Giant.

Looking every bit like the two-time Cy Young Award winner that he is, Lincecum worked eight innings, with all but one being a perfect inning, and allowed just two hits. The right-hander engineered a 2-1 decision over the Colorado Rockies that kept the Giants atop the National League West standings.

Read the rest here.

Notes: Barry Zito (9-13, 3.98) starts tonight for the Giants against Colorado's Jason Hamel (10-8, 4.56)....A superb pitching performance by starter Tim Lincecum kept Javier Lopez out of Friday's series opener, but the lefty specialist more than likely will get his fair amount of work during the next two days. The Rockies lineup boasts Carlos Gonzalez, Jason Giambi, Todd Helton and Seth Smith, all of whom give pitchers fits -- no matter which hand they throw with. Lopez, who can throw over the top and drop down to the side, said he's careful about mixing his repertoire when facing divisional teams such as Colorado. "I always try to tweak it a little bit because they have the same video you do," said Lopez, who has limited lefties to three hits in 36 at-bats (.083) since the Giants acquired him from Pittsburgh in a July 31 trade. "When you're facing the same people in the same division, you don't want to give them the same look every single time."

The legislation failed to pass, but it was followed by 10 similar proposals over the next three weeks by legislators including Senators Jacob Javits, Frank Church, and Mark Hatfield. Nixon had temporarily silenced his critics earlier in the month by announcing a new troop withdrawal and a reduction in the draft call for the next two months, but many of those who opposed him in Congress felt that Nixon had ignored an opportunity to push for peace in Vietnam when Ho Chi Minh had died on September 1.

NEW YORK -- "Godfather II" it wasn't. Instead, the highly anticipated David Price-CC Sabathia sequel felt a little like "Smokey and the Bandit II."

But Rays fans would give Thursday night's contest in the Bronx two thumbs up.

September's second installment of Price vs. Sabathia did not live up to its advanced billing. Instead, a pitching matchup with warts materialized. And Price came out on top, thanks to his teammates, who pounded the Yankees for seven runs in the sixth en route to a 10-3 win with 47,646 watching at Yankee Stadium.

Read the rest here.

Notes: Jeff Niemann (10-7, 4.48) starts tonight for the Rays. He's opposed by Seattle's Jason Vargas (9-11, 3.75)....The Rays aren't taking any chances. Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon sent Niemann home early to get sufficient rest for Friday's series opener, and the Rays have reason to believe that the former first-round Draft pick is ready to turn the corner. "He felt really good about his workout the other day," said Maddon. "He was about as upbeat as I've seen him in a while. [Pitching coach Jim] Hickey felt the same way. He thought it was for real. We'll see how it all works out tomorrow. If you're watching that game tomorrow and he's throwing his fastball where he wants to, he'll throw six or seven innings tomorrow."....Tampa Bay's victory over the Yankees on Thursday gave the Rays a 10-8 advantage in the season series and thus the first tiebreaker to decide the division if the teams are tied at the end of the year. ... The Rays finish the season with series against Baltimore and Kansas City....The Rays are 40-12 in front of home crowds of 30,000-plus since the start of the 2008 season -- including 9-3 this year.

CHICAGO -- If the Giants aren't one of baseball's most dangerous teams, they rank among the weirdest.

Only the Giants, it seems, can remain offensively challenged for several games at a time, then interrupt that stretch with a vigorous hitting performance that's as confounding as it is welcome.

On Thursday night, San Francisco again channeled the 1927 Yankees, with Juan Uribe portraying Babe Ruth. Uribe tucked two home runs, including a grand slam, and six RBIs into a nine-run second inning that awakened the Giants' sleepy offense and propelled them to a 13-0 pasting of the Chicago Cubs.

Read the rest here.

Notes: Tim Lincecum(14-10, 3.60) starts tonight for the Giants againstColorado's Jhoulys Chacin(9-9, 3.30)....The Giants have won 14 of their last 21 and 17 of their last 29 games....Shortstop Juan Uribe went into Thursday's series finale against Chicago struggling to the tune of an .095 average (2-for-21) in his last six games, but he made that all disappear with a huge game. Uribe delivered a grand slam and a two-run homer in San Francisco's nine-run second-inning outburst, all but icing the game on the strength of his own power stroke. Uribe's two homers pulled him within one of equaling his career high of 23, set with the White Sox in 2004. Ten of the veteran's 22 home runs have either tied the game or given the Giants a lead, and he has a career high with 83 RBIs. Uribe has struggled to a .221 (55-for-249) road average, which ranks among the worst of any NL regular....Rookie catcher Buster Posey has 64 RBIs this year, the fifth-highest total for a Giants rookie since 1958. ... The Giants are 60-18 when scoring the first run, and they're 15-1 in their last 16 games in which they score first.
