Two Players, Assistant Coach Added to 2010 USA Hockey Women's Winter Training Camp Roster
Sperry, Packer to Participate in Camp Dec. 26-31; Johnson to Serve as Assistant Coach
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Forward Madison Packer (Birmingham, Mich./Univ. of Wisconsin) and goaltender Kerrin Sperry (North Reading, Mass./Boston Univ.) have been added to the roster for the 2010 USA Hockey Women's Winter Training Camp, which is set for Dec. 26-31, at the National Sports Center's Schwan Super Rink, in Blaine, Minn.
Packer was a member of the U.S. squads that captured gold medals at the 2008 and 2009 International Ice Hockey Federation World Women's U18 Championships. She also participated in the 2008 Women's National Festival and played in the 2008 Women's Under-18 Series.
Meanwhile, Sperry previously attended the 2009 USA Hockey Women's National Festival and was a member of the U.S. Women's Under-18 Select Team for the 2009 Women's Under-18 Series against Canada.
Packer and Sperry will join 38 of the nation's top female hockey players for a six-day camp, which will serve as a tryout and training session for the U.S. Women's National Team. A total of 17 Olympians will be on hand in Blaine, led by Jenny Potter (Edina, Minn.) and Angela Ruggiero (Simi Valley, Calif.), who have each competed in four Olympic Winter Games.
In addition, Joel Johnson, assistant coach for the University of Minnesota women's ice hockey team, will join the camp coaching staff as an assistant coach. He is currently serving his second stint with the Gophers, after helping lead Minnesota to national titles in 2000 and 2004. Johnson also spent six seasons at Bethel University, including three seasons as head coach of the men's ice hockey team.
Katey Stone, head women's ice hockey coach at Harvard University, will lead the camp as head coach, while both Mark Hudak, head women's ice hockey coach at Dartmouth College, and Hilary Witt, assistant women's ice hockey coach at Northeastern University, will also serve as assistant coaches.
NOTES: Madison Packer and Kerrin Sperry will take the places of Amanda Kessel (Madison, Wis./Univ. of Minnesota) and Alex Rigsby (Delafield, Wis./Univ. of Wisconsin), who are both injured ... Included on the camp roster are 20 of the 22 players who recently competed at the 2010 Women's Four Nations Cup in St. John's, N.L. The remaining two are part of the 20-member U.S. Women's National Under-18 Team will be in Blaine, Minn., on Dec. 26 prior to departing for the 2011 IIHF World Women's U18 Championship in Stockholm, Sweden on Dec. 27. NHL Network U.S. to Broadcast All Team USA Games, 15 Games Overall at 2011 IIHF World Junior Championship
Thorne, Starman, Pletsch and Jaffe to Serve as Broadcast Team
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – NHL Network U.S. will provide exclusive live coverage of all U.S. National Junior Team games at the 2011 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship, Dec. 26 – Jan. 5, in Buffalo, N.Y. NHL Network U.S. will also televise all medal-round games and five additional preliminary-round match-ups, airing a total of 15 games in high definition from the tournament. All U.S. games will be NHL Network original broadcasts. In addition, NHL Network will provide nightly recaps on its signature show "NHL On the Fly."
Gary Thorne, Dave Starman, Fred Pletsch and Billy Jaffe will make up the broadcast team for the NHL Network’s coverage of Team USA games.
Thorne, who will handle play-by-play duties, boasts over 30 years of sports broadcasting experience. He served a 12-year stint (1992-2004) as the voice of ESPN’s NHL telecasts and was also the lead hockey play-by-play voice of NBC’s 2002 Olympic Winter Games coverage. Thorne currently serves as the play-by-play voice for Major League Baseball's Baltimore Orioles, and provides play-by-play for Major League Baseball on ESPN Radio.
Starman, who will serve as the analyst, is currently the lead analyst for CBS College Sports coverage of NCAA hockey. He served as the analyst for NHL Network's coverage of Team USA's games at the 2009 and 2010 IIHF World Junior Championship as well.
Pletsch, who will serve as the rinkside reporter in the preliminary round for the third straight year, is in his 11th season as an analyst on the Central Collegiate Hockey Association Game of the Week on Fox Sports Detroit. He has also worked as a sideline reporter for ESPN during the NCAA Men’s Ice Hockey Championship and is currently the associate commissioner of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association.
Jaffe, who will serve as the rinkside reporter for the medal round, regularly contributes to the popular “NHL Live!” show simulcast on Sirius XM Radio and NHL Network, the Network’s “NHL On the Fly,” and serves as the color analyst and in-studio for NHL on VERSUS.

Germany-Czech Republic Pre-World Junior Championship Game in Rochester Postponed by One Day

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Germay-Czech Republic pre-World Junior Championship game scheduled for Wednesday (Dec. 22) at the The Sports Centre at MCC in Rochester, N.Y., has been postponed by one day due to unforeseen delays in the arrival of Germany's hockey equipment.
The game will now be played at 7 p.m. EST on Thursday (Dec. 23) at The Sports Centre at MCC. Those holding tickets for the game on Wednesday may simply present the same tickets for admission to Thursday's contest.

Former U.S. Army Ranger Joe Dames to Speak to U.S. National Junior Team Tomorrow
Purple Heart Recipient Arrived in Rochester Monday
ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Joe Dames, a decorated U.S. Army Ranger who served six tours of duty in Iraq between 2006-09, arrived here Monday night and will speak to members of the U.S. National Junior Team tonight (Dec. 22) in Amherst, N.Y.
The Purple Heart Medal recipient, who was honorably discharged from military duty after being wounded in combat in 2009, was one of three decorated servicemen that spoke to members of the U.S. Olympic Men's Ice Hockey Team in preparation for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games.
Dames graduated from Florida State University and attended the U.S. Army Airborne School, where he received the Distinguished Military Graduate Award, issued to a graduating senior who displays outstanding qualities of leadership, high moral character, academic achievement and exceptional aptitude in military science.
After graduating from the United States Army Ranger School in January 2006, Dames served his first tour of duty in Iraq as a Stryker Platoon Leader. He eventually rose to the rank of Captain, and planned and executed over 150 high-risk missions as a member of a Joint Special Operation Task Force.
Along with receiving the Purple Heart Medal upon his honorable discharge in July 2009, Dames was given two Bronze Star Medals and an Army Commendation Medal. He is currently working on future force technology as a unit systems integrator for Augustine Consulting, Inc.

U.S. Junior Squad Falls to the Czech Republic in a Pre-Tournament Game, 3-2, in a Shootout
Final U.S. National Junior Team Roster to Be Announced Today at 9:10 a.m. EST
ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Kyle Palmieri (Montvale, N.J./Syracuse Crunch) scored twice, but a squad of candidates for the 2011 U.S. National Junior Team dropped a 3-2 shootout decision to the Czech Republic here tonight at The Sports Centre at MCC.
Tonight's game was the second of three pre-tournament games designed to prepare the U.S. National Junior Team for the 2011 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship, which will take place Dec. 26-Jan. 5 in Buffalo, N.Y. Of the 29 players invited to the pre-tournament camp, 22 will be selected to the final U.S. roster, which will be announced tomorrow at 9:10 a.m. EST on USA Hockey's
Facebook page.
"We're a team that wants to play with speed," said Keith Allain, head coach of the U.S. National Junior Team. "We've got some work to do once we pick our final roster tomorrow."
The Czech Republic took a 1-0 lead 13 minutes into the game, but the U.S. evened the score in the final minute of the first period while on the power play. Palmieri took a pass from Justin Faulk (South St. Paul, Minn./Univ. of Minnesota Duluth) and fired a slap shot over the glove of Czech goalie Filip Novotny to make the score 1-1 after one.
After a scoreless second period, the Czech Republic again earned a one-goal lead just 22 seconds into the third. But Palmieri knotted the score at 2-2 midway through the frame with a rebound goal from from the far post.
Jeremy Morin (Auburn, N.Y./Rockford IceHogs) scored for Team USA in the shootout, but the Czech Republic earned the eventual victory.
Team USA will play its next pre-tournament game on Thursday (Dec. 23) against Norway at the Jamestown Savings Bank Arena in Jamestown, N.Y. The game, to be webcast live on
FASTHockey.USAHockey.com, will start at 7:30 p.m. EST.
