Lightning lose shootout in Carolina
The Tampa Bay Lightning slipped to 0-1-1 on the season, after dropping a 2-1 shoot out decision to the Carolina Hurricanes Tuesday night at the RBC Center in Raliegh, North Carolina.
Jussi Jokkinen put the Canes on top with a power play goal at 13:12 of the opening period. Tampa Bay tied the game on a 5-on-3 power play goal by Ryan Malone at 6:00 of the second period. After that, the nets were sealed shut by the two goaltenders, Mike Smith for the Lightning and Cam Ward for Carolina.
The game advanced through a scoreless third period and a scoreless five-minute overtime and on into a shootout. Sergei Samsonov beat Smith with a left-to-right move for the Hurricanes to begin the shootout. Ward then stopped Tampa Bay's Martin St. Louis, Smith stopped Jokinen, and following a shot by the Lightning's Vincent Lecavalier bouncing off the right post, Tuomo Ruutu beat Smith to the stick side, winning the extra standings point for Carolina.
Tampa Bay outshot the Hurricanes 30-28. Each team scored a power play goal, the Lightning in eight chances, Carolina in 5.
Tampa Bay opens their home schedule tomorrow night at the St. Pete Times Forum against the 0-2-0 New Jersey Devils. Faceoff is set for 7:30p.m. EDT. 620 WDAE has the radio call with Dave Mishkin, Phil Esposito and Matt Sammon manning the booth. Sun Sports has the live telecast with Rick Peckham, Bobby "The Chief" Taylor and Paul Kennedy.
