Lightning sink Sens










Steven Stamkos continued to pound on the door of the elite player club Thursday night with two power play goals and an assist, leading the Tampa Bay Lightning to a 5-2 win over the Ottawa Senators, in front of 13,213 fans at the St. Pete Times Forum in Tampa, Florida.

Stamkos opened the scoring with his first power play goal of the night at 7:20 of the opening period, giving the Lightning a 1-0 lead after one.

In the second, Todd Fedoruk scored at 4:34 and Ryan Malone at 14:48, putting Tampa Bay on top through 40 minutes, 3-0.

The Lightning expanded the lead to 5-0 in the third. Stamkos snapped home his second power play goal of the night at 7:09, then Alex Tanguay scored his first goal for Tampa Bay at 9:29. The Senators made things look a bit better, with goals by Jarkko Ruutu at 10:17 and Alexi Kovalev at 14:19, making the final score 5-2 in favor of the Lightning.

Tampa Bay had the advantage in shots on goal, 27 to 23. Mike Smith made 21 saves for the Lightning, while Brian Elliott had 22 saves for Ottawa. Tampa Bay was 2-for 6 on the power play and 3-of-3 on the penalty kill.

The Lightning are 4-3-3 on the season for 11 points, good for second place in the Southeast, 7 points behind division leader Washington. Ottawa falls to 6-3-2 for 14 points, 1 point back of Buffalo in the Northeast.

Tampa Bay wraps up their current home stand Saturday against the New Jersey Devils, beginning at 3:00p.m. EDT. Kids under 12 will be admitted free to the game. Radio is on 620 WDAE, Sund Sports has the TV side.
