Sitting in fourth in the N.L. East and saying that they can do better, the Florida Marlins have fired Manager Fredi Gonzalez. Bench coach Carlos Tosca and hitting coach Jim Presley were also let go. Edwin Rodriguez, who has managed at Triple-A New Orleans for the past season-and-a-half, replaces Gonzalez. Brandon Hyde and John Malles replace Tosca and Presley. All three were are on an interim basis.
Gonzalez skippered the Marlins to a 276-279 record in three-plus years, and had been given a contract extension through 2011 before last season. He's the third manager to lose his job this season, following Baltimore's Dave Tremblay and Kansas City's Trey Hillman.
The Marlins start play today with a record of 34-36, 7 1/2 games behind Atlanta in the N.L. East.
