ST PETERSBURG -- The Tampa Bay Rays, who had yesterday off, get back to action this evening at home against the Baltimore Orioles. The Orioles, who lost at Cleveland 4-1 last night, have won 8 of their last 10.

The Rays, who had their modest 2 straight win streak stopped on Wednesday, are 69-45, and are second in the A.L. East, 2 games behind the Yankees, while leading Boston by 4 games and the White Sox by 5 1/2 in the Wild Card race. Tampa Bay begins a six-game home stand tonight, with 3 games against Baltimore and 3 against Texas. You can follow the Rays on 620AM WDAE and the Rays Radio Network. All games through Friday, September 3rd, can be seen on Sun Sports. The Saturday August 14th game against Baltimore will be on FOX.

Notes: James Shields(10-10, 4.91) goes to the hill tonight for the Rays. He'll be opposed by Baltimore's Jeremy Guthrie(6-11, 4.04)....Tonight's game will feature a post-game concert by disco-legends, The Village People.

The Yankees lead Tampa Bay by 2 games in the A.L. East, Boston is 6 back(They trail the Rays by 4 games in the Wild Card chase), Toronto is 11 back and Baltimore is 31 1/2 games behind.

In the A.L. Central, Minnesota leads the White Sox by 1 game, they're 9 1/2 games ahead of Detroit, with Cleveland 17 games and Kansas City 18 games behind.

Out in the (not-so)wild A.L. West, Texas leads the Angels by 7 1/2, Oakland trails by 8 and Seattle is 22 games behind.

In the N.L. East, Atlanta leads Philadelphia by 2 games, Florida trails by 8 1/2 games, the Mets are 9 behind and Washington trails by 17 1/2.

In the N.L. Central, St. Louis leads Cincinnati by 1 game for first, Milwaukee is 11 1/2 behind, Houston is 16 games behind, the Cubs are 17 back and Pittsburgh is 25 1/2 games off the pace.

San Diego leads the N.L. West by 2 1/2 games over San Francisco(The Giants 1 game up on Philadelphia and 1 1/2 on Cincinnati in the N.L. Wild Card chase). Colorado sits in third, 8 1/2 games out, with the Dodgers trailing by 9 games and Arizona by 22 1/2.

SAN FRANCISCO -- Andres Torres didn't start Thursday's game because of tightness in his legs.

But by the time he stepped into the batter's box in the ninth inning, Torres' legs were more than loose.

Torres spent the bottom of the ninth pacing up and down the dugout, anxiously awaiting his chance to hit. With one out and the bases loaded, Torres got his chance, hitting a game-winning single to center field to give the Giants an 8-7 win over the Cubs at AT&T Park.

San Francisco currently leads Philadelphia by 1 game and Cincinnati by 1 1/2 games in the N.L. Wild Card race, is home tonight at 10:15pm EDT for the first of a three-game series with San Diego. The Spokane Shock defeated the Milwaukee Iron 60-57 in front of 8,151 Thursday night and will advance to the ArenaBowl as the National Conference Champions.

Kyle Rowley completed 76% (28/37) of his passes with 334 yards and seven touchdowns. The Nifty Playmaker of the Game, Huey Whittaker led Spokane with a game-high 14 receptions for 165 yards and four receiving, plus one rushing touchdowns. WR Markee White added two touchdown receptions, while WR Greg Orton was second on the team in receptions with eight for 94 yards.

For Milwaukee, Chris Greisen completed 77% of his passes for 235 yards and five touchdowns, while completing at least one pass to six different receivers. Burns led the Iron receivers in receptions (8), while WR Tiger Jones led the team in touchdowns (2).

Tomorrow night, the Tampa Bay Storm are home against their arch-rivals, the Orlando Predators. Kickoff is set for 7:30pm EDT.
