The Tampa Bay Juniors won their first game of the 2010-2011 MJHL season Saturday night, blanking the Florida Eels 7-0.

Tampa Bay added three more goals in the second. Scott Vargas scored on the power play at 11:43, Paul Lochner lit the lamp at 12:53, then a short-handed goal from Pat Trixis stretched the lead to 5-0 at the end of the second period.

The Juniors continued their control of the game with a pair of power play goals in the third. Dustin Disbro scored t 5:59, then Lochner's second goal of the night, at 13:45 put the game firmly in grasp of Tampa Bay, which went on to record the 7-0 win.

Even Weiss was rarely tested, and confidently stopped all 32 shots he faced for the shutout. The Juniors mounted consistant pressure all night, launching 48 shots on Florida goaltender Jeremy Eck. Tampa Bay was 4-for-10 on the power play and 4-of-4 on the penalty kill.

Next up for the Tampa Bay Juniors is a pair of MJHL contests on the road versus the Atlanta Knights on Saturday, September 25th at 7:30pm EDT and Sunday, September 26th at 11:00am at Knights Arena in Atlanta. ST. PETERSBURG -- The Rays have been playing plenty of close games recently, and Saturday was no different.

"Honestly, one of the most grinded-out games we've played here, ever -- just the whole game," Rays manager Joe Maddon said.

The game had gut-wrenching twists and turns all night long, until finally the end came via Brandon Wood's throwing error in the bottom of the 10th to give the Rays a walk-off 4-3 win in front of 31,896 at Tropicana Field.

Read the rest here.

Notes: Jeff Niemann (10-6, 4.32 ) is on the mound for the Rays today against the Angels' Scott Kazmir(8-14, 5.99 ).....Niemann has lost 3 straight since coming off the D.L....Center fielder B.J. Upton, who is still close friends with Kazmir, said he's looking forward to facing his former teammate for the third time this season. "First time, I think it's going to be a little weird," said Upton, who is 2-for-4 with a home run against Kazmir this season....Rays left fielder Carl Crawford recorded his Major League-leading 13th triple on Friday night and became just the third player in the past 75 years to record 90 triples over a seven-year span, joining Stan Musial and Lance Johnson as the only other players to do it.

SAN FRANCISCO -- The Giants are in an offensive funk. And when a club is in such a state, it does anything it can do to snap out of it.

Down two runs in the bottom of the fifth with runners on the corners, one out and -- outside of Wednesday's 10-run explosion -- only eight runs in the past seven games, Giants manager Bruce Bochy made a drastic decision.

Read the rest here.

Notes: Barry Zito(8-13, 4.02) goes to the mound in today's 4:05pm EDT start for the Giants against the Brewers' Chris Narveson (11-7, 5.05 )....Center fielder Andres Torres has been on the bench since an emergency appendectomy a week ago. According to Bochy, though, he could return next weekend. Bochy said his report was based on a best-case scenario, but he said he could envision Torres returning to the lineup in time for the Giant's three-game series next weekend in Colorado. "But we have to be smart about this," Bochy said. "He just had surgery, so as much as we'd like to have him back we're going to wait until he's ready."....Tickets for a potential National League Division Series will go on sale to the general public at 10 a.m. PT on Tuesday, the Giants announced Saturday. ... Tickets will only be available through sfgiants.com or by phone at 877-4-SFGTIX. No in-person sales will be available.
