NEW YORK -- During Wednesday night's two-hour, 11-minute rain delay, Joe Maddon could have worried about his pitching. Instead, he listened to the team's traveling secretary recount old Rays stories, keeping everyone in stitches.
"A lot of old Devil Rays stories were being told that were absolutely hysterical," Maddon said.
Jeremy Hellickson afforded Maddon the peace of mind to sit and chuckle at Jeff Ziegler's act. Maddon knew his starter, Wade Davis, was finished despite having thrown just 2 1/3 innings, because the delay lasted too long for him to return. So Hellickson became the pitcher to carry the load.

Notes: David Price (17-6, 2.79) starts tonight' series finale for the Rays. He's opposed by C.C. Sabathia (20-6, 3.05) of the Yankees....Third baseman Evan Longoria is the fourth player in Rays history to reach 100 RBIs in consecutive seasons, joining Fred McGriff (1999-00), Carlos Pena (2007-08-09) and Aubrey Huff (2003-04)....Since June 22, the Rays have made only 28 errors in 82 games, seven fewer than any other club and nine fewer than any other AL team, with the Yankees next at 37. The Rays have gone from 21st in the Majors in fielding percentage to their current spot of sixth....With closer Rafael Soriano's next save, he will pass Roberto Hernandez (43 in 1999) for the most saves in a single season in club history....The Rays have an AL-best 38 RBIs by pinch-hitters this season, the most by an AL club since the 1990 Rangers had 43. The Rays' 35 successful pinch-hits are also eight more than the next-closest AL team (Boston with 27).

That's an exaggeration. But after the Giants slipped from first place in the National League West with Wednesday night's 2-0 loss to the Chicago Cubs, a couple of them acknowledged the club's shortcomings at the plate.
The defeat left the Giants a half-game behind San Diego in the division standings. They also trail Wild Card leader Atlanta by a half-game.
Read the rest here.
Notes: Madison Bumgarner (5-6, 3.27) starts tonight for the Giants against the Cubs' Ryan Dempster (14-10, 3.50)....Bumgarner has allowed four earned runs in 26 innings over his last four starts (1.38 ERA in that span). But he's gone 0-2 in that stretch because he's received a total of two runs of support, including zero runs in his most recent outing last Friday in San Francisco's 3-0 loss to Milwaukee. He threw 5 2/3 innings in that effort, giving up a career-high-tying nine hits while striking out five and walking one. He will be making his second career start against the Cubs. He received a no-decision in his only start against Chicago on Aug. 9, after allowing three earned runs on nine hits and two walks with three strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings. ... San Francisco pitchers have fashioned the lowest ERA in the Majors so far in September, posting a 1.07 ERA (20 earned runs in 169 innings) in 19 games. This comes after Giants pitchers had a 4.55 ERA in August, by far the team's highest ERA for one month this season.
