1972 - The Ringo Starr film about U.K. rocker Marc Bolan, "Born to Boogie," debuted in London. The film stars Elton John.

1980 - Yoko Ono called for a 10-minute silent vigil around the world for John Lennon, her husband, who was shot to death six days earlier. Over 100,000 people went to Central Park in New York to honor the request.

1995 - Classified documents from the White House were released that revealed the FBI had spied on John Lennon and his anti-war activities during the early '70s in a possible attempt to have Lennon deported.

1999 - Paul McCartney played a show at the Cavern Club in Liverpool. It was the first time that McCartney had played at the club since 1963.


The Leaning Tower of Pisa reopened on this date in 2001 after 11 years and $27 million to fortify it, without fixing its famous lean.

1997 - Mike Gartner (Phoenix Coyotes) became only the fifth player in NHL history to score 700 career goals. The other 700 goal scorers were Wayne Gretzky, Gordie Howe, Phil Esposito and Marcel Dionne.

1997 - Barry Sanders (Detroit Lions) ran for more than 100 yards for his 13th consecutive game.

1998 - Jerry Rice (San Francisco 49ers) caught a pass in a game against the Detroit Lions. It was his 191st consecutive game with a reception.


On this date in 2006, Romanian police said they were looking for two burglars who broke into a woman's apartment and left her some money. The 86-year-old told police two young men, wearing masks, trashed her apartment. She said they rummaged for money or valuables but found only her wallet with the equivalent of a few bucks inside. The burglars then gave the woman all of their loose change -- and left without taking anything.
