University of Wisconsin Remains No. 1 in USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Women's College Hockey Poll

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The University of Wisconsin remains No. 1 in this week's USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Women's College Hockey Poll after twice defeating Bemidji State University last weekend. The Badgers, who boast a 26-2-2 record, accumulated 184 points and 13 first-place votes to earn the top spot for the sixth week in a row.

Cornell University sits at No. 2 with 177 points and six first-place votes after earning a victory over St. Lawrence University and tying Clarkson University, while Boston University remains in the No. 3 spot with 137 points after posting a 1-1-0 record against the University of New Hampshire last week. The University of Minnesota (134) advances one place to No. 4 following a weekend sweep of St. Cloud State University, while Mercyhurst College (124) rounds out the top five with two victories over Wayne State University.

This week features two top-10 match-ups, with No. 3 Boston University and No. 7 Boston College facing off in the 33rd annual Beanpot tournament tonight (Feb. 8), and No. 1 University of Wisconsin hosting No. 8 University of North Dakota in a weekend series.

NOTES: The Western Collegiate Hockey Association leads all conferences with four ranked programs, while Hockey East boasts three, ECAC Hockey has two ranked teams and College Hockey America has one ... A total of 13 teams received votes.

ABOUT THE POLL: The 14th annual USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Women’s College Hockey Poll is conducted each week in conjunction with the American Hockey Coaches Association. The poll includes input from coaches and journalists representing each of the four NCAA Division I ice hockey conferences, as well as composite votes from officers of the AHCA and USA Hockey Magazine, the most widely distributed hockey magazine in the world.

President Barack Obama finally has kicked the habit. His wife Michelle confirmed it on Tuesday. She told reporters that it's been almost a year since he last lit up.

Detroit Mayor Dave Bing has been soliciting the Internet for suggestions on how to clean up the city and its image. One follower of his on Twitter suggested that Detroit erect a giant statue of Robocop. Bing thanked the tweeter but said that idea wouldn't be used.

1960 - Elvis Presley's star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame was added. The star was one of the original 1,558 to be placed.

1967 - Elvis Presley bought the Circle G ranch in Walla, Mississippi.


American Idol is back tonight. It's the last night for the audition episodes as the judges head to San Francisco.

1964 - The Beatles made the first of three record-breaking appearances on "The Ed Sullivan Show." 73 million people watched the show. It was their American TV debut. They performed All My Loving," "Till There Was You," "She Loves You," "I Saw Her Standing There," and "I Want to Hold Your Hand."

1972 - Wings made their concert debut at Nottingham University in England.

1993 - Paul McCartney released a solo album, "Off The Ground."

1895 - In Massachusetts, W.G. Morgan invented volleyball.

1895 - The first college basketball game was played as Minnesota State School of Agriculture defeated the Porkers of Hamline College, 9-3.

1900 - Dwight F. Davis put up a new tennis trophy to go to the winner in matches against England. The trophy was a silver cup that weighed 36 pounds.

1924 - Frank Nighbor received the first NHL Hart Trophy. The award, that judges the most valuable player to his team, was the first individual award in the NHL.

1932 - America entered the 2-man bobsled competition for the first time at the Olympic Winter Games held at Lake Placid, NY.

1960 - A verbal agreement was reached between representatives of the American and National Football Leagues. Both agreed not to tamper with player contracts.
