MIAMI -- Catch-up ball is not the Rays' forte at this juncture of the season, so when they fell behind, 5-0, on Saturday, Joe Maddon felt he needed to pull out all the stops.
In the eighth inning, the Rays manager flipped the switch for five pinch-hitters. The maneuvering produced three runs, but not enough to bring a victory to the Rays, who lost, 5-3, to the Marlins at Sun Life Stadium with 21,814 in attendance.
The Rays lost their third consecutive game and fell to 25-21 on the season.

SAN FRANCISCO --  Though Tim Lincecum yielded little Saturday, he did flip the baseball he threw for the game's final strike into the stands as he left the diamond.
After all, Lincecum needed no mementos of his performance. The box score of the Giants' 3-0 victory over the Oakland A's accurately conveyed his excellence. And his sheer pitching mastery should have left an enduring impression on the 17th consecutive sellout crowd at AT&T Park and the viewers of FOX's telecast.
