U.S. Women's National Team Shuts Out Canada, 4-0,
at 2011 Women's IIHF Twelve Nations Invitational Tournament Series
Meghan Duggan Named Player of the Game for Second Straight Night
VIERUMAKI, Finland -- Molly Schaus (Natick, Mass.) made 17 saves to lead the U.S. Women's National Team to a 4-0 shutout of Canada in its fourth game of the International Ice Hockey Federation Twelve Nations Invitational Tournament Series. With the win, the U.S. improved to 4-0 in the tournament.
"It was a fun game today," said Katey Stone, head coach of the 2011 U.S. Women's National Team. "The kids played on their toes, which made it exciting to watch."
After a scoreless first period, Meghan Duggan (Danvers, Mass.) struck for her fourth goal of the Twelve Nations Invitational Tournament Series at 3:28 of the second period. Jocelyne Lamoureux (Grand Forks, N.D.) opened a two-goal lead for the U.S. with a power-play marker at 7:23. Hilary Knight (Sun Valley, Idaho) lit the lamp at 11:52 of the middle frame and Lisa Chesson (Plainfield, Ill.) tallied a power-play goal with eight seconds remaining in the second period to give the U.S. a four-goal lead.
The U.S. held its 4-0 lead through the third period, outshooting Canada, 43-17, in the game.
Schaus made 17 saves to pick up her second shutout of the IIHF Twelve Nations Invitational Tournament Series.
The U.S. Women's National Team will face Canada again on Monday (Aug. 29) at 9:30 a.m. EDT in an exhibition game at Vierumäki Arena.
NOTES: Meghan Duggan was named the U.S. Player of the Game ... Kelli Stack leads the team in scoring with nine points (4-5) through four games ...
