Uniondale, N.Y.--  John Tavares is a budding star in the National Hockey League. The Tampa Bay Lightning found that out the hard way Thursday night.

Tavares, the No. 1 selection at the Entry Draft two years ago, had 2 goals and a pair of assists in the opening period as the New York Islanders cruised to a 5-1 victory at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

On this date in 1912, Theodore Roosevelt was shot while campaigning in Milwaukee, WI. Roosevelt's wound in the chest was not serious and he continued with his planned speech. William Schrenk was captured at the scene of the shooting.

1973 - Jackie Stewart announced his retirement from auto racing.

1976 - The New York Yankees won their first AL pennant since 1964.
