Barry Zito pitched into the eighth inning Monday and was sustained by a three-run first inning as the Giants topped the Arizona Diamondbacks, 4-2.

Zito (4-2), who won only three games all last season, allowed five D-backs to reach scoring position but stranded four of them. His shakiest inning was the third, when Justin Upton's ground-rule RBI double left runners on second and third with two outs. The left-hander escaped that jam by coaxing a harmless fly ball from Jason Kubel, who doubled one inning earlier.

Dario Franchitti took a drink of the traditional winner's beverage and then poured the rest on his head the way Dan Wheldon did after winning the Indianapolis 500 twice.

With that came a point to the sky for his fallen friend, a hug of Wheldon's widow, Susie, and a ride around the track in honor of victories past and present.
