Portland up 2-1 in WHL Finals















Portland, OR. -- Brendan Leipsic’s goal 4:37 into the third period stood up as the winner as the Portland Winterhawks edged the visiting Edmonton Oil Kings 4-3 in Game 3 of the 2012 WHL Championship series on Sunday in Portland, OR.

The Hawks now hold a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven series after having won their second straight game in the series.

Leipsic, who scored is seventh goal of the playoffs and third in the last two games, put the Hawks up 4-1 with his third-period marker. Sven Bartschi had a goal and an assist while Ty Rattie – with his 18th of the playoffs – and Oliver Gabriel also scored for the Winterhawks, who staked out a 3-0 lead in the second period.

Henrik Samuelsson, Martin Gernat and Keegan Lowe scored and Michael St. Croix chipped in two assists for the Oil Kings, who scored three times in a third-period rally, but fell just short of the comeback as they drop their second straight decision. The Oil Kings had not lost back-to-back games since November.

Mac Carruth stopped 34 of 37 shots he faced to claim his 31st career playoff win for the Winterhawks. Laurent Brossoit made 29 saves in absorbing his second straight defeat.
The Winterhawks will host the Oil Kings for Game 4 of the best-of-seven series on Tuesday in Portland, OR.

Portland leads best-of-seven series 2-1.
