Riders defense, Sheets running key win over Edmonton

Regina, SK. -- Defense reigned supreme Sunday night, with Saskatchewan coming out on top, 17-1 over the Edmonton Eskimos in a CFL West Division clash in front of a record high opening day crowd of 31,459 at Mosaic Stadium in Regina.

Neither offense could solve the opponent's defense from the start, before the Roughriders cashed in on a 32 yard field goal from Chris Milo with :26 seconds left in the opening quarter, giving Saskatchewan a 3-0 lead.

Burke Dales would take a small piece out of the deficit for Edmonton with a 62 yard punt single with just 1:36 gone in quarter number two. The Riders would tack on three points after that, on a 56 yard punt single by Milo with 10:33 left and a conceded safety with :53 seconds to play, giving Saskatchewan a 6-1 halftime lead.

Both defenses continued to stonewall their opponents through a scoreless third quarter until late in regulation, when the Riders' Kory Sheets got across the line of scrimmage and then made an outside cut to the right, reaching the end zone on a 34 yard run for the games' first and only major score. Milo converted with 2:12 to go, then added a 17 yard field goal 42 seconds later and the defense shut down the Eskimos one more time before running out the clock to nail down an impressive 17-1 win.

For Saskatchewan, Darian Durant was 20-of-32 passing for 203 yards, finding Chris Getzlaf 4 times for 74 of those yards. Kory Sheets ran the ball 14 times for 89 yards and 1 touchdown, while Chris Milo kicked 2 field goals, a convert and a punt single. Defensively, Shomari Williams had 5 tackles and 1 sack, Abraham Kromah had 5 tackles, Brent Hawkins had a fumble recovery and a sack, Craig Butler had an interception and the defense racked up 6 sacks. For Edmonton, Steven Jyles was 10-of-19 passing for 91 yards and Kerry Joseph was 4-of-8 passing for 34 yards. Adarious Bowman caught 4 passes for 35 yards, Hugh Charles ran 9 times for 45 yards, Burke Dales had a punt single and 10 punts for a 43 yard average and J.C. Sherritt made 8 tackles.

The Riders dominated the stat sheet, gaining 16 first downs to the Eskimos' 11, ran the ball 124 yards to 63, passed 203 yards to 125, had 299 net yards to 137 and committed no turnovers to Edmonton's 3, 1 fumble, 1 interception and once on downs. Each team was penalized 8 times, Saskatchewan for 75 yards and Edmonton for 78.

The Roughriders improve to 2-0, in advance of next Saturday's meeting with the defending Grey Cup champion BC Lions, who are also 2-0. Kickoff is set for 3:00pm EDT with Rod Pedersen and Carm Carteri on 620 CKRM and the Rider Radio Network. The game can be seen in Canada on TSN and in the U.S. online, on ESPN3.com. 1-1 Edmonton hosts the 0-2 Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Friday, July 13th. Kickoff is set for 9:00pm EDT.
