On this date in 1774, the new Continental Congress, the governing body of America’s colonies, passed an order proclaiming that all citizens of the colonies "discountenance and discourage all horse racing and all kinds of gaming, cock fighting, exhibitions of shows, plays and other expensive diversions and entertainment."

St. Petersburg, FL. -- Timing is everything. And where Fernando Rodney and the Rays were concerned, the timing proved to be impeccable for both parties.
Rodney got the chance he needed and produced one of the best-ever seasons by a relief pitcher and the Rays benefited greatly by giving him a chance.
The first personal rewards were realized Friday when Rodney was named both the American League Comeback Player of the Year and the Delivery Man of the Year.

St Louis, MO. -- A cheerful Hunter Pence had one last remark for reporters as he left the Busch Stadium interview room following a pregame chat.

"Have fun," Pence said. "Enjoy the game."

Maybe Pence knew the Giants had a memorable performance ready to deliver.

The Giants definitely enjoyed themselves Friday night, relying on a four-run fourth inning and Barry Zito's masterly 7 2/3-inning effort to stun the St. Louis Cardinals, 5-0, in Game 5 of the National League Championship Series. Brandon Crawford's two-run single and Zito's run-scoring bunt single highlighted San Francisco's uprising in the fourth.

1996 - Andruw Jones (Atlanta Braves), nineteen years old, became the youngest player to hit a home run in the World Series. He hit two home runs against the New York Yankees.

1996 - The Tampa Bay Lightning played their first game in the new Ice Palace.

2004 - The Boston Red Sox defeated the New York Yankees in Game 7 of the AL Championship. The Red Sox had been down 3-0 in the series.
