San Francisco, CA. -- Walking off the mound so early Sunday, Matt Cain had absolutely none of all that shine from the 2012 World Series ring he and the Giants received an hour earlier.

A World Series isn't won or lost in one April afternoon, but a career-worst inning will dampen the AT&T Park mood no matter the pregame ceremony. A disastrous nine-run fourth inning by the St. Louis Cardinals haulted the celebration and sank San Francisco in a 14-3 loss.

So maybe you've done this. You really, REALLY need a couple of days off, but you have no vacation left. You're not sick, so you pull the old "my great aunt died" scam. A British social worker lied her way to 66 days of bereavement leave, concocting death stories about five people in her life. She said her ex-husband had hanged himself, her mother died in surgery, and her brother, aunt and uncle had died within a week.
