A 9-year-old boy in Canada stole a city bus and went for a joyride. Police is Saskatoon said the child stole the bus Friday morning and then caused an accident with another city bus and vehicle. No injuries were reported.

1998 - Mark McGwire, of the St. Louis Cardinals, hit his 62nd home run of the season. He had beaten a record that had stood for 37 years by Roger Maris. McGwire would eventually reach 70 home runs on September 27. 

2002 - The NFL's Houston Texans played their first regular season game. They beat the Dallas Cowboys 19-10. 

2002 - Pete Sampras won his 14th Grand Slam title when he beat Andre Agassi in the U.S. Open.

For the fourth time in six weeks, moviegoers chose to see Guardians of the Galaxy over all other films - including the new release The Identical and 20th anniversary re-release of Forrest Gump. Guardians continues to be the standout story from an otherwise humdrum summer movie season. The Identical was so poorly received it debuted in 11th place.
