The Tampa Bay Juniors broke open a one-goal game with a three-goal third period last night to best the Florida Eels 6-2, in game one of the USPHL's Empire South playoffs in Ellenton.

After an Eels goal just past the midway mark of the opening period started the scoring, Max Mulholland evened the scored just 98 seconds later, off assists from Josh Basso and Peter Lopez to tie the game 1-1. Tampa Bay would take the lead in the waning moments of the period, as Steven Noyes tipped home a Benoit Chim blast from the blue line for a power play goal with just 13 seconds left in the opening period, to give the Juniors a 2-1 lead.

In the second period, the Eels would tie the game with a power play goal at the 3:25 mark of the middle frame. The game would stay tied until the latter stages of the period when another power play goal, this one scored by Noyes from Chin at 17:24, put the Juniors on top for good, 3-2.

Tampa Bay busted it open with three third period goals. Tanner Frankich scored from the left circle at 11:51, assisted by Mulholland and Chin, putting the Juniors on top 4-2. The lead grew just over three minutes later, as Mason Ledbetter stole the puck and gunned one home at 15:07 for a 5-2 lead. Noyes would wrap up the scoring and round out his hat trick with a shorthanded goal at 19:28, giving Tampa Bay the 6-2 win.

The Juniors were outshot 35-33. Sam Coleman had a strong game in goal, making 33 saves. Tampa Bay was 2-for-4 on the power play and 4-of-5 with a shorthanded goal on the penalty kill.

The USPHL Empire South playoffs continue this afternoon, as the Tampa Bay Juniors host the Florida Eels at the Ellenton Ice and Sports Complex, with face-off set for 5:00pm EST. Game three, if necessary, is set for 8:45pm EST Saturday night. All games can be seen on Fasthockey.com.
