Western Hockey League roundup for Saturday, November 3rd, 2018



Red Deer Rebels 1, Calgary Hitmen 0

Jeff de Wit scored a power play goal at 17:34 of the first, assisted by Dawson Barteaux and Alexander Alexeyev and Ethan Anders made 34 saves, as the Rebels took the matinee contest before 5,613 at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary. The Hitmen, who outshot Red Deer 34-17, got 16 saves from Jack McNaughton. The Rebels won for the 7th time in their past 10 games, while Calgary is now 4-5-1 in their past 10.

Moose Jaw Warriors 5, Kootenay Ice 1

A 4 goal second period powered Moose Jaw to the home ice win before 3,242 at Mosaic Place. The first period was scoreless, then goals by Yegor Buyalski, Keenan Taphorn, Tristan Langhorn and Taphorn again, countered a Kootenay goal by Jaeger White, putting the Warriors up 4-1 after two. Dalton Hamaliuk added a third period goal for the home team for the final margin. Brodan Salmond made 17 saves for Moose Jaw, Duncan McGovern 38 for the ICE, who have lost 6 of their last 10. The Warriors have won 2 of their last 3.

Regina Pats 6, Saskatoon Blades 5

The Pats won for the 5th time in 17 starts this season, thanks to a Nick Henry power play goal at 15:48 of the third. Henry added a goal midway through the first and an assist to pace the home team attack, in front of 5,600 at the Brandt Centre. Captain Jake Leschyshyn also had a 2 goal, 1 assist night for Regina, Austin Pratt had a goal and an assist, Duncan Pierce scored a goal, Aaron Hyman doled out three assists and Max Paddock made 21 saves. For the Blades,Max Gerlach scored twice, Seth Bafaro, Tristen Robins and Chase Wouters once each, Kirby Dach had three assists, Dawson Davidson and Eric Florchuk a pair of helpers, while Nolam Maier and Dorrin Luding combined for 19 saves. The Pats went 2-for-2 on the power play, while Saskatoon was 3-for-6.

Swift Current Broncos 4, Edmonton Oil Kings 3 (OT)

After starting the season 1-14-0-1, the Broncos won in overtime for the second consecutive night, winning at home over Edmonton with 2,367 looking on at the Innovation Credit Union i-plax. Andrew Fyten scored the game-winner 41 seconds into the extra session. Max Patterson, Ethan Regnier and Alec Zawatsky added goals for Swift Current and Isaac Poulter made 42 saves, in a game that saw just one penalty called on each team. Oil Kings goals were scored by Matthew Robertson and Brett Kemp, who both also added an assist and Jalen Luypen. Try Fix-Wolansky added 3 assists, giving him 28 helpers on the season, tops in the league. Dylan Myskiw made 16 saves. Both teams went 1-for-1 on the power play.

Kelowna Rockets 4, Brandon Wheat Kings 3

A 2 goal third period launched the Rockets to victory, in front of 5,278 at Prospera Place in Kelowna. Nolan Foote scored twice for the Rockets, Kyle Topping and Eric Gardiner added singles for Kelowna, Roman Basran stopped 21 Brandon shots. The Wheat Kings, who finished their western swing at 2-3-1-1, received offense from Luka Berzan, who scored twice and Braden Schneider, who scored once. Jiri Patera made 25 saves. The Rockets went 3-for-5 on the power play and Brandon went 3-for-6.

Portland Winterhawks 2, Victoria Royals 1

Portland scored twice in the second period, then held off the Royals in the third for the win, in front of 3,631 at Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Portland. Cross Hanas and Joachim Blichfeld scored for the Winterhawks, Dino Kambeitz for Victoria. Shane Farkas had 34 saves for Portland, Griffen Outhouse 36 for the Royals. Each team scored a power play goal.

Prince George Cougars 2, Seattle Thunderbirds 0

Cole Moberg had a goal and assist, Jackson Leppard a goal and Taylor Gauthier 37 saves to lead the Cougars to the home win before 3,585 at the CN Centre in Prince George. Seattle, who had a 37-27 shots advantage, got 25 saves from Liam Hughes.

Everett Silvertips 6, Spokane Chiefs 2

Everett was dominant from start to finish in the road win in front of 6,044 at Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena. Connor Dewar, Jackson Berezowski and Sean Richards  scored first period goals for the Silvertips, Dawson Butt and Martin Fasko-Rudas scored in the second period and Gianni Fairbrother in the third. The Chiefs goals came in the third period from Cordel Larsona and Carter Chorney, who scored shorthanded. The Everett goals by Dewar, Richards and Fairbrother came on the power play, as did the Spokane goal by Larson. The Tips moved back into first in the U.S. Division with the win.

Vancouver Giants 2, Kamloops Blazers 1

David Tendeck won a goaltending duel with Dylan Ferguson Friday night, making 29 saves to Ferguson's 31, leading the Giants to their third win in the past four games. Vancouver goals were scored Milos Roman and Yannik Valenti, Zane Franklin scored a power play goal for Kamloops. 3,487 attendance the contest at the Langley Events Centre.
