Western Hockey League roundup for Tuesday, December 11th, 2018
Saskatoon Blades 6, Edmonton Oil Kings 3
Saskatoon won for the 4th time in their past 5 games, in front of 2,947 at SaskTel Centre. A three-goal third period for the Blades broke the game open after a 3-3 tie through 40 minutes. Gary Haden led the Saskatoon attack scoring four goals, including all three third period Blades tallies. Chase Wouters and Seth Bafaro also scored, Nolan Maier made 22 saves. For the Oil Kings, Liam Keeler, Brett Kemp on the power play and Matthew Robertson scored goals, Todd Scott had 23 saves.
Kelowna Rockets 3, Kootenay ICE 1
Leif Mattson scored a pair of power play goals, Kyle Topping added one too, James Porter made 29 saves to power Kelowna to the road win in front of 1,997 at Western Financial Place. Cole Muir scored the ICE goal, Jesse Makaj made 27 saves. The Rockets were 3-for-4 on the power play. Kootenay's winless streak is now at 12 and they are 1-14-3-0 since a modest two-game win streak October 30th-November 1st.
Red Deer Rebels 2, Kamloops Blazers 1
Red Deer skated to the win, before 3,289 at the Enmax Centrium. For the Rebels, Reece Johnson scored a first period power play goal and Alex Morozoff scored in the second. A Brodi Stuart goal at 7:14 brought Kamloops within a goal, but they couldn't get the equalizer. Red Deer's Ethan Anders stopped 31 of 32 shots, Dylan Ferguson stopped 41 of 43 for the Blazers. The Rebels went 1-for-8 on the power play and 3-of-3 on the penalty kill.
Seattle Thunderbirds 6, Prince George Cougars 5
The Thunderbirds have now won 3 of their last 5, thanks in part to a three-goal second period. Nolan Volcan had 3 goals and 1 assist for Seattle, Zack Andrusiak 2 goals and 3 assists, Jarrett Tyszka 1 goal, 1 assist, Liam Hughes 24 saves. For the Cougars, Vladislav Mikhalchuk scored twice, Jackson Leppard a power play goal, Taylor Gautheir and Isaiah DiLaura combined for 37 saves. The TBirds were 2-for-4 on the power play, PG was 1-for-3. Attendance was 4,145 at accesso ShoWare Center. The Cougars have dropped 7 of their past 8.
Victoria Royals 7, Portland Winterhawks 4
Victoria scored 3 times in each of the first two periods to skate past Portland, in front of 3,206 at Save-On-Foods Memorial Arena. The Hawks led 2-0 just past the midway point of the first, before the Royals fired up the offense. For Victoria, Tarun Fizer scored 3 goals, Dante Hannoun had 2 goals and 2 assists, Ralph Jarratt and Brandon Cutler scored once each, while Griffen Outhouse made 35 saves. Brock Gould played 1:46, but didn't face any shots. For Portland, Cross Hanas scored twice, Joachim Blichfeld and Mason Mannek once each, Shane Farkas and Dante Giannuzzi combined for 30 saves.
