Time runs out on Riders in loss to Stamps
Regina, SK. -- An inability to move the ball and the failure to stop Jon Cornish combined to extend the Saskatchewan Roughriders' losing streak to 5, in a 17-10 loss to the Calgary Stampeders Saturday, before 33,427 at Mosaic Stadium in Regina.
On a very blustery day, Calgary would take advantage of the win at their backs in the first quarter, scoring twice. On their first possession, Kevin Glenn found Joe West for a 34 yard touchdown. Rene Paredes converted and with 3:27 gone in the first, the Stampeders were up 7-0. They would double the spread on their next possession as Glenn found Romby Bryant for a 14 yard touchdown, capping an 8 play, 101 yard drive. Paredes converted with 3:38 left in the first, for a 14-0 Calgary lead.
After a scoreless second quarter, the Stamps would add three in the third, as Paredes kicked a 34 yard field goal, to put the Stampeders ahead 4:44 into the third, 17-0.
The Riders, who hadn't advanced past the Calgary 43 all day, finally put points on the board in the fourth. Sandro Deangelis kicked a 37 yard field goal with 7:04 to play, then Kory Sheets would score on the 3 yard run. With the Deangelis convert with 3:55 to play, the deficit was down to 7, at 17-10. Saskatchewan would get the ball back with 2:25 to playcouldn't move it and were forced to punt with 2:02 to play. the Stampeders would run most of that time off the clock, punting the ball back to the Riders, who would take possession at the 20 with just 7 seconds left. A long pass fell incomplete and Calgary would escape with the 17-10 win.
For the Stampeders, Kevin Glenn was 15-of-24 passing for 171 yards and 2 touchdowns. Jon Cornish didn't score, but did run the ball 24 times for 159 yards. Joe West and Romby Bryant each caught a touchdown pass, while Rene Paredes kicked a field goal and 2 converts. For Saskatchewan, Darian Durant was 17-of-29 passing for 179 yards and 1 interception. Kory Sheets had 11 carries for 74 yards and a touchdown and Sandro Deangelis kicked a field goal and a convert.
Calgary had 171 yards passing and 185 yards rushing for 341 total yards, allowing 1 sack, turning the ball over once, while being penalized 9 times for 77 yards. For the Roughriders, they had 179 yards passing, 152 rushing and 328 yards total offense. They allowed 2 sacks, turned the ball over twice and were penalized 8 times for 55 yards.
With the win, Calgary improves for 4-4, while Saskatchewan slips to 3-5, with their fifth straight loss. The Stamps now have won seven straight against the Riders, dating back to the 2010 season. Saskatchewan's next action is Sunday, September 2nd at 4:00pm EDT against Winnipeg. Catch the game on 620 CKRM with Rod Pedersen and Carm Carteri calling the action. St. Petersburg, FL. -- Considering how well he's pitched this year, there really wasn't any surprise when Rays starting pitcher David Price plowed through the Royals' lineup.
What threw the Tampa Bay off, though, was an almost equally stellar night from Kansas City's Luke Hochevar, despite his 5.24 ERA entering Tuesday's matchup.
But the game came down to the bullpens with the Royals breaking through against the Rays' Joel Peralta in the top of the 10th and holding serve for a 1-0 win at Tropicana Field. The Rays have now lost three times by that same score, their most in a season.

The Giants, who already have assured themselves of winning the three-game series, widened their National League West lead over Los Angeles to 1 1/2 games, their biggest bulge since Aug. 8.
