Outstanding Leadership Award Presented to Washington Volunteer at Tacoma Undy 5000
On Saturday, June 5th, the CCA proudly presented the 2010 Outstanding Leadership Award to Washington's Anita Mitchell. A crowd of hundreds witnessed the ceremony which took place at the Tacoma Undy 5000. Ms. Mitchell has been involved with the CCA as a Buddy and as a local advocate Ambassador. While Anita devotes much of her time to giving one on one support to fellow colon cancer survivors, she is also the visionary behind national Dress in Blue Day. She started Dress in Blue Day in March of 2006 in an effort to raise awareness about the importance of screening. This simple idea has grown into a full-fledged national campaign with supporters from coast to coast. We applaud Anita's dedication to the cause and for reminding us that one person truly can make a difference.
Honor a Special Man this Father's Day
Last June, just a few days after Father's Day, Dr. Jennifer Kemp cheered as her husband, Nick, a stage III rectal cancer survivor, the surgeon who saved his life, and her nine year old son crossed the Denver Undy 5000 finish line together. The CCA would like to see more fathers share special moments with their families. This Father's Day, please consider making a donation in appreciation of a special man in your life and help us reach more fathers, grandfathers, brothers, sons and uncles about the importance of colon cancer screening. With your help, we can save the lives of many fathers and support fathers who have already been diagnosed with colon cancer.

Advocacy Update: Fast Tracking New Drug and Therapy Development
The CCA thanks our members who wrote Senator Harkin regarding the Cures Acceleration Network (CAN), a key component of health reform legislation. The CAN aims to speed up the development of new drugs and therapies. The bill authorizes Congress to appropriate up to $500 million to establish CAN in the Office of the Director at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Over 80 organizations joined in a letter to the Senate Appropriators showing community support for $500 million in funding CAN.
Please stay tuned as the appropriations process continues in Congress. Your help will be needed to secure funding for cutting-edge research into the next generation of treatments and cures for colorectal cancer and other diseases.

Bayer Now Enrolling Clinical Trial Participants
Recently, Bayer initiated patient enrollment in a phase III trial to evaluate the efficacy and safety of regorafenib. The drug is being studied to treat patients with metastatic colorectal cancer who have not responded properly to standard therapies.
