Jeff Niemann allowed just two hits and Carlos Pena homered twice last night, to lead the Tampa Bay Rays to a 9-0 win over the Toronto Blue Jays before 12,937 at Tropicana Field.
Pena's first homer, a two-out solo shot in the fourth, staked the Rays to a 1-0 lead. Tampa Bay blew the game wide open with seven runs in the fifth. Evan Longoria's liner to left scored Reid Brignac and B.J. Upton to make it 3-0. Sean Rodriguez scored on Willy Aybar's single, then Longoria, Aybar and Kelly Shoppach all scored on Pena's second homer of the night, a grand slam to right, putting Tampa Bay ahead 8-0. The Rays added one more run in the sixth, as Upton scored on Aybar's single to right and Tampa Bay cruised from there for the 9-0 win.
Niemann went all the way on the hill for the Rays, striking out six while allowing just two hits, in running his record to 6-0. Brian Tallet of Toronto started, despite battling flu-like symptoms. He lasted just four innings, allowing five earned runs, to see his record drop to 1-2.
The Tampa Bay Rays, with a record of 38-20 and 2 games ahead of the Yankees in the A.L. East, continue their home stand tonight, with the second of three games against the Toronto Blue Jays. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10pm EDT tonight on 620AM WDAE, the Rays Radio Network and Sun Sports. The Rays then host the Florida Marlins for three games, Friday and Saturday at 7:20pm EDT and Sunday at 1:40pm EDT.

Happy Anniversary to the Great Platte River Road Archway in Kearney, Nebraska. The Archway, which spans Interstate 80 near exit 272 in Kearney, is a monument to the Westward migration that took place in the United States during the mid-1800s, as well as pioneer life in the Platte River Valley.
The Archway, which opened June 9th, 2000, is a very attractive monument, which all visitors, young and old alike, are sure to enjoy.
