KANSAS CITY -- It wasn't a September to remember for James Shields and October didn't start in promising fashion for him, either.

The Rays right-hander had hoped for a solid outing on Friday that would propel him into the playoffs. But the Royals got to Shields for 12 hits and seven runs (six earned) over five-plus innings in a 7-0 defeat for Tampa Bay.

Read the rest here.
Notes: Andy Sonnanstine (4.1, 4.58) takes the mound for Tampa Bay tonight aginst the Royals' Kyle Davies (8-11, 5.31)....Evan Longoria sat out Friday's game with a strained left quad(But we all know his mouth still works). He hasn't played since September 23rd and is listed as day-to-day....The Rays need nine runs to match the club record for a season, 803, which they set last year. If they reach 800 runs, they could be the second team in history to score that many runs with a team batting average under .250. Right now, the Rays are hitting .249 as a club....With six more strikeouts, Rays hitters would match the Rockies' mark from 2009 for the largest number of strikeouts by a postseason-bound club.

SAN FRANCISCO -- The Giants intended to throw a heck of a party Friday night. But at first, the beverages were flat, the snacks tasted stale and nobody felt like dancing.

Though the revelry everyone anticipated began almost spontaneously, the fun ultimately began too late.

The Giants couldn't quite overcome a six-run deficit and squandered the first of their three opportunities to capture the National League West title, losing, 6-4, to the San Diego Padres before a sellout crowd at AT&T Park.

Read the rest here.

Notes:  Barry Zito (9-13, 4.08) goes for the Giants today against San Diego's Tim Stauffer (5-5, 1.89)....Andres Torres was named Friday as the winner of the team's Willie Mac Award, given to the Giants player who best embodies competitive spirit, ability and leadership. The award is named after Giants legend Willie McCovey....Giants closer Brian Wilson needs one more save to equal Rod Beck's single-season club record of 48, set in 1993.
