On this date in 1820, the Missouri Compromise was enacted by the U.S. Congress and signed by U.S. President James Monroe. The act admitted Missouri into the Union as a slave state, but prohibited slavery in the rest of the northern Louisiana Purchase territory.

1954 - Elvis Presley filed his first income tax return. He listed a total $916.33 as his total income.

1964 - The Elvis Presley movie "Kissin' Cousins" opened nationwide.

1976 - The album "Elvis - A Legendary Performer, Vol. 2" hit #46 in the U.S.

1966 - British Prime Minister Harold Wilson was given a petition asking that Liverpool's Cavern Club be reopened. The club had recently closed due to bankruptcy.

1973 - John Lennon's visa extension was canceled by the New York Office of the Immigration Department. It had been granted only five days before.

1976 - EMI Records re-released all 22 British Beatles singles. In addition "Yesterday" was released for the first time on 45 in the U.K.


Aspirin was patented by German researchers Felix Hoffman and Hermann Dreser on this date in 1899.


Today in Sports History:

1973 - Larry Hisle (Minnesota Twins) became baseball's first designated hitter. The spring-training exhibition game was against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

1982 - National Basketball Association history was made when San Antonio beat Milwaukee 171-166 in three overtime periods to set the record for most points by two teams in a game. The record was beaten on December 13, 1983 by the Pistons and the Nuggets when they played to a final score of 186-184

1983 - The United States Football League began its first season of pro football competition.

1997 - Mike Gartner (Phoenix Coyotes) scored his 30th goal of the season. He set a record for scoring 30 goals in a season for the 17th time in his career.


 The first air-conditioned naval ship, "The Newport News," was launched from Newport News, VA on this date in 1944.
