A 6'10" Croatian named Ivo Karlovic broke Andy Roddick's fastest-serve record in the fourth set of a Davis Cup doubles match Saturday. In 2004, Roddick's yellow ball traveled 155 mph; Karlovic's went 155.96 mph.

1921 - Cy Denneny (Ottawa Senators) scored six goals against the Hamilton Tigers.

1939 - The Boston Bruins won the Prince Wales Trophy when they clinched the NHL regular season championship. This marked the first time the Prince of Wales Trophy was awarded for this reason.

1951 - Ezzard Charles won a 15-round decision over Jersey Joe Walcott. It was Charles' eighth heavyweight title defense.

1954 - The NBA raised the baskets from 10 feet to 12 feet for an exhibition game between the Minneapolis Lakers and Milwaukee Hawks.

1954 - The Soviet Union defeated Canada in the first international ice hockey competition.

1955 - Baseball commissioner Ford Frick said that he was in favor of legalizing the spitball.

1996 - Magic Johnson (Los Angeles Lakers) became the second player to reach 10,000 assists.

1997 - Wilson Kipketer of Kenya set the world indoor 800-meter record at 1 minute, 43.96 seconds at the World Indoor Championships in Paris.

1998 - Wayne Gretzky (New York Rangers) scored his 1,000th NHL goal. He scored 878 regular season goals and 122 goals in the playoffs.

LAS VEGAS -- Hold on, Kyle Busch -- Mark Martin isn’t giving up without a fight.
In a fuel-mileage race that saw Danica Patrick post the best-ever result for a female driver in one of NASCAR’s top three national series, Martin took the checkered flag Saturday for the 49th time in the Nationwide Series, holding off -- at least temporarily -- Busch’s assault on Martin’s career wins record.

LAS VEGAS -- Carl Edwards found a way to put the frustration of the first two Sprint Cup races of the season behind him.

After finishing second in the Daytona 500 and having his pole-winning car knocked into the fence the following week at Phoenix, Edwards finally found Victory Lane -- in Sunday's Kobalt Tools 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Edwards took the lead from Tony Stewart during a cycle of pit stops late in the race. Stewart, who had taken two tires in a track-position play on his previous stop, had to pit early for four tires during the final run. Edwards had the luxury of taking two tires on his final stop, and that gave him the margin he needed to beat fast-closing race runner-up Stewart and third-place Juan Montoya to the finish line.
