Last year consumers spent an average of $786 on holiday gifts, but if the latest poll from Gallup is correct they'll be sitting on the wallets this year. Americans say they plan to spend an average of $704 on holiday giving this year. At the same time last year American consumers planned to spend $770 and ended up spending a bit more. Retailers can only hope that the pattern repeats itself this year.

Elvis Presley movie "Love Me Tender" premiered.

1960 - The Elvis Presley movie "G.I. Blues" premiered in Los Angeles to benefit the Hemophilla Foundation. Ronald Reagan, Juliet Prowse and Cesar Romero attended the event. The movie was released nationwide on November 23, 1960.

1975 - The Elvis Presley single "Bringing It Back" hit #65 in the U.S.


Police were called out to a wedding reception in Russia after a stunt went wrong. A magician at the reception had handcuffed the couple together as part of a trick -- and then couldn't free them.

1998 - Emmitt Smith (Dallas Cowboys) moved into third place on the all-time touchdown list when he got his 127th.

1998 - Barry Sanders (Detroit Lions) registered his fifth straight 100-yard running game. It was the 75th of his career.

2002 - Mike Modano (Dallas Stars) scored his 1,000th NHL point. He was only the 5th U.S.-born player to reach the milestone.

2002 - Dave Andreychuck (Tampa Bay Lightning) scored his 250th NHL power-play goal.

2005 - Major League Baseball players and owners agreed to tougher penalties for steroid use for the next season. The new rules called for a 50 game suspension for a first offense, 100 games for the second, a lifetime ban for a third, plus testing for amphetamines.

2006 - Emmitt Smith was named winner of ABC's "Dancing with the Stars."
