Western Hockey League Roundup for Saturday, October 27th, 2018












Prince Albert Raiders 6, Regina Pats 2

The Raiders ran their CHL-best record to 15-1-0-0 with a convincing 6-2 home ice win over the Regina Pats, in front of 2,510 at the Art Hauser Centre. Sean Montgomery, Justin Nachbaur and Brett Leason scored first period goals, then Noah Gregor on the power play, Eric Pearce shorthanded and Jakob Brook, also shorthanded, staked the Raiders to a 6-0 lead just past the midway point of the second. Regina would respond with a second period goal from Nick Henry and another in the third from Garrett Wright but could get no closer, with Prince Albert winning 6-2. Ian Scott had 19 saves for the Raiders and Dean McNabb 23 stops for the Pats, who lost their fifth straight and 11th in 14 starts this season.

Everett Silvertips 4, Swift Current Broncos 1

A two-goal third period opened up a close game, allowing the Tips to skate to the 4-1 win at the Innovation Credit Union i-plex in Swift Current, in front of 2,275. Everett's Connor Dewar scored a shortie, but Tanner Nagel responded later, tying the game 1-1 after one. Gianni Fairbrother's shorthanded goal late in the period staked the visitors to a 2-1 lead through 40 minutes. Dewar tallied his second of the night just 15 seconds into the third, then Riley Sutter wrapped it up with an empty-netter 1:25 from the end, giving Everett the 4-1 win. Dustin Wolf made 22 saves for the Silvertips, Isaac Poulter made 37 saves for the Broncos.

Edmonton Oil Kings 5, Saskatoon Blades 2

The Oil Kings got two goals from  Quinn Benjafield, singles from Vladimir Alistrov and Brett Kemp, plus an empty-netter from Trey Fix-Wolansky, skating to a 5-2 win over Saskatoon, with 7,219 looking on at Rogers Place in Edmonton. Gary Haden shorthanded late in the second, then even strength late in the third, accounted for the Blades offense. Dylan Myskiw stopped 23 in the Oil Kings net and Dorrin Luding 40 for Saskatoon.

Moose Jaw Warriors 4, Medicine Hat Tigers 3 (SO)

Moose Jaw rallied from 3-0 down early in the third, then potted two in the shootout, to take a comeback win in Medicine Hat's Canalta Centre. 3,104 attended the contest. Hayden Ostir and Tyler Preziuso in the first and Kaxson Steele early in the third, staked the Tigers to a 3-0 lead.  But Tate Popple at 4:39, Josh Broch at 12:13 and Brayden Tracy, with the goaltender off at 19:41, lit the lamp to square the game and force free hockey. After a scoreless overtime, Tristan Langan scored in the shootout, giving the Warriors the win. Brodan Salmond had 24 saves for Moose Jaw, Mads Sogaard 29 for Medicine Hat.

Kelowna Rockets 4, Prince George Cougars 3 (OT)

The Kelowna Rockets, recovering from a disasterous start to their season, got a power play goal from Nolan Foote 43 seconds into overtime, pushing Kelowna past the Cougars in overtime, before 4,682 at Prospera Place in Kelowna. Beside Foote's game-winner, Kelowna got goals from Lassi Thompson, as well as power play goals from Erik Gardiner and Kyle Topping. Josh Maser, Jackson Leppard on the power play and Ryan Schoettler scored for PG. Roman Basran made 30 saves for the Rockets, who won for the 4th time in their past five games. Taylor Gauthier, in goal for the Cougars, made 29 saves.

Kamloops Blazers 6, Portland Winterhawks 2

Jermaine Loewen's 3 goals paced the Blazers to the win, in front of 4,554 at Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Portland. Kamloops, who went 2 for 6 on the power play, also had goals from Connor Zary, Martin Lang and Carson Denomie, while getting 32 saves from Dylan Ferguson. Goal scorers for Portland were Joachim Blichfeld and Mason Mannek. Shane Farkas made 22 saves. 

Tri-City Americans 5, Spokane Chiefs 3

The Tri-City Americans, playing the 4th of 11 straight road games, grabbed a comeback win in front of 7,917 at Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena. Jaret Anderson-Dolan and Luke Toporowski staked Spokane to a 2-0 lead after one. A Parker AuCoin power play goal for the Ams, cut the deficit to 2-1 after two. In the third, Brett Clayton and Sasha Mutala with the man advantage, sandwiched around Anderson-Dolan's second of the night, tied the game at 3. Tri-City wrapped it up with third period goals from Isaac Johnson and Nolan Yaremko into an empty net, to skate to their fifth straight win. Beck Warm made 30 saves for the Americans, Bailey Brkin had 27 saves for Spokane.

Seattle Thunderbirds 5, Vancouver Giants 1

Seattle goals coming from Matthew Wedman, who scored twice, Noah Philip, Dillon Hamaliuk and Samuel Huo, plus 41 saves from Liam Hughes, gave the TBirds a big road win. Milos Roman scored the lone Giants goal, with David Tendeck and Trent Miner combined for 19 saves. A crowd of 3,029 watched the game at the Langley Events Centre in Langley.

Victoria Royals 3, Brandon Wheat Kings 1

Two third goals broke a 1-1 tie, sending Victoria to the home win, before 4,703 at the Save-On Foods Memorial Arena. Stelios Mattheos on the power play for Brandon and Kaid Oliver with 7 seconds left for the Royals scored in the first period. After a scoreless second, Oliver scored at 9:46 of the third, then Ralph Jarratt added an empty net, shorthanded goal with 28 seconds left, gave Victoria the win.
