Western Hockey League Roundup for Friday, November 9th, 2018













Brandon Wheat Kings 6, Red Deer Rebels 3

Brandon scored 3 in the second and 3 more in the third in front of 4,114 at Westoba Place in Brandon. After a scored first, Red Deer took a 2-0 lead early in the second on goals by Brandon Hagel and Arshdeep Bains. The Kings responded with three in the second half of the period, from Lynden McCallum, Stelio Mattheos and Neithan Salame. In the third, Marcus Sekundiak and Ben McCartney scored to push the lead to 5-2. Jeff de Wit responded for the Rebels, but Luka Burzan added an empty netter for Brandon to finish it off. Jiri Patera made 40 saves for the Wheat Kings, Ethan Anders 30 for Red Deer.

Prince Albert Raiders 6, Swift Current Broncos 2

Noah Gregor had a big night for the Raiders with 2 goals and 3 assists, as Prince Albert won for the 10th straight time and 17th in 18 starts this season. Sean Montgomery and Kody MacDonald scored twice each, Donovan Buskey made 17 saves. For Swift Current, whose modest two-game win streak ended with the loss, MacKenzie Wight and Tanner Nagel scored the goals, Joel Hofer made 37 saves. 2,621 looked on at the Art Hauser Centre in Prince Albert.

Regina Pats 5, Tri-City Americans 1

Regina scored twice in the first 2:36 and never looked back, posting their sixth win of the season, in front of 4,759 in the Brandt Centre in Regina. Pats Captain Jake Leschyshyn scored 3, Austin Pratt had a goal and an assist, Marco Creta scored a goal, Nick Henry had 4 assists, Aaron Hyman 3 helpers and Max Paddock had many stellar stops among his 39 saves. Tri-City, who saw their six game road winning streak come to an end, got a goal from Parker AuCoin and 28 saves from Beck Warm. The Pats were 2-for-5 on the power play, while the Americans were just 1-for-8.

Edmonton Oil Kings 5, Kootenay ICE 2

A two-goal third period by Edmonton broke open a one-goal game after 40 minutes. Quinn Benjafield led the Oil Kings attack with a goal and two assists, Liam Keeler, Brett Kemp, Try Fix-Wolansky and Tyler Horstmann each scored a goal and Dylan Myskiw made 32 saves. For Kootenay, goals were scored by Martin Bodak and Jaeger White, Duncan McGovern had 33 saves. Attendance at Western Financial Place in Cranbrook was 2,160.

Lethbridge Hurricanes 4, Calgary Hitmen 2

Despite being outshot 36-19, the Hurricanes pulled out the home ice victory before 4,555 at the Enmax Centre, in a game that saw just one penalty called on each team. Jalen Joseph, Calen Addison, Alex Cotton and Zachary Cox scored for Lethbridge, Luke Coleman and Josh Prokop for the Hitmen. In goal, Reece Klassen had 34 saves for the Canes, while Carl Stankowski made 15 stops for Calgary.

Saskatoon Blades 3, Medicine Hat Tigers 1

With 2,834 looking on at the Canalta Centre in Medicine Hat, the Blades trailed after one, but pulled away in the final 40 for the road win. Max Gerlach, Gary Haden and Riley McKay scored for the Blades, Nolan Maier made 35 saves. Josh Williams got the lone Medicine Hat goal, Jordan Hollett made 28 saves.

Everett Silvertips 6, Kamloops Blazers 1

The Silvertips added 4 second period goals to the 2 they scored in the first, rolling to the road win before 4,973 at the Sandman Centre in Kamloops. Akash Bains scored twice to lead Everett, Jake Christiansen had a goal and an assist, Riley Sutter, Sean Richards and Jackson Berezowski had a goal each, while Dustin Wolf and Max Palaga split the night in goal, combining for 13 saves. Gianni Fairbrother had 4 assists. For Kamloops, Ryley Appelt scored a goal, Dylan Ferguson and Rayce Ramsay combined for 30 saves.21 penalties for 64 minutes were called on the two teams. The Tips ruled the rink on special teams, going 5-for-8 on the power play and 4-of-4 on the penalty kill.

Kelowna Rockets 3, Seattle Thunderbirds 1

Kelowna, who started the season 1-8, won for the 7th time in 9 starts. Kyle Topping had a goal and an assist, Nolan Foote a goal, Libor Korczak a goal, Lassi Thomson 2 assists and Roman Basran 32 saves for the Rockets. Seattle's goal scorer was Zack Andrusiak, Liam Hughes made 30 saves. Attendance was 4,022 at the accesso ShoWare Center in Kent.

Victoria Royals 7, Spokane Chiefs 5

The Royals skated to the home ice win on the strength of two goals and an assist from D-Jay Jerome, a goal and 2 assists from Brandon Cutler, plus a goal and assist from both Tarun Fizer and Dante Hannoun. Scott Walford and Phillip Schultz added singles, Griffen Outhouse added an assist, plus 30 saves. Spokane's offense was paced by Riley Wood with 2 goals and an assist. Scoring once each were Ethan McIndoe, Luke Toporowski and Carter Chorney. Bailey Brkin and Dawson Weatherill teamed up to make 28 saves. Attendance at Victoria's Save-On-Foods Memorial Arena was 4,626.
