Kennewick, WA. -- The Americans scored late in regulation to force overtime, but this time the magic didn't continue, as Kelowna scored early in the extra session to take a 3-2 win, before 3,480 at the Toyota Center Friday night.
Tri-City got on the board first at 16:00 of the opening period, on Kyle Olson's 5th goal of the season, assisted by Nolan Yaremko and Isaac Johnson, giving the Americans a 1-0 lead after one.
In the second, the Rockets took the lead, on goals by Leif Mattson from Nolan Foote at 5:58 and Kyle Crosbie from Dallon Wilton at 15:39.
Kelowna held the lead until the final moments of regulation, with Krystof Hrabik banged home the tying goal for Tri-City with 10.2 seconds showing on the clock. Aaron Hyman and Yaremko drew the assists at 19:49, tying the game 2-2 and requiring an extra session to decide the winner.
The overtime didn't last long however, as Mattson scored his second of the night, assisted by Kyle Topping 20 seconds into overtime to win it for the Rockets, 3-2.
Goaltending was sharp at both ends, with James Porter making 26 saves for Kelowna and Beck Warm 23 for the Americans. Neither team scored with the man advantage, the Rockets in one try and Tri-City in six. With the win, Kelowna improves to 12-15-1-0 on the year for 25 points, 13 back of first-place Vancouver in the B.C. Division. The Americans slip to 14-9-1-0 for 29 points, 4th in the U.S. Division, 1 point behind 3rd place Portland.
Coming up: For Tri-City, they play Vancouver twice. Saturday night at Pacific Coliseum at 7:00 pm and Sunday, 4:00 pm at the Langley Events Centre. The Americans play at Kelowna next Wednesday, then return home to host Seattle next Friday and Lethbridge for Teddy Bear Toss next Saturday. Kelowna hosts Saskatoon tonight.
