Western Hockey League roundup for Friday, September 27th, 2019













Moose Jaw Warriors 5, Brandon Wheat Kings 0

Bailey Brkin stopped all 22 shots he faced and Eric Alarie scored at 7:41 of the first to lead Moose Jaw to the win, before 3,451 at Westoba Place. Kaeden Taphorn, Keenan Taphorn, Tate Popple and Jadon Joseph also scored for the Warriors. Jiri Patera made 24 saves for Brandon.

Calgary 4, Edmonton 3 (OT)

Carson Focht scored 1:26 into the extra session to push the Hitmen to the win, in front of 5,137 at the Scotiabank Saddledome. Focht's goal at 10:55 of the third had forced the overtime. Other Calgary goals were scored by Josh Prokop and James Malm, who also assisted on Focht's game-winner. Jake Neighbors, Dylan Guenther and Josh Williams scored for Edmonton. In goal, Jack McNaughton made 21 saves for Calgary, Todd Scott 33 for Edmonton.

Kamloops 3, Kelowna 2 (OT)

Ryan Hughes scored twice, including the game winner at 2:42 of overtime on the power play, to give Kamloops their first win in four starts. Zane Franklin also scored for the Blazers, Dylan Garand made 18 saves for Kamloops. Dillon Hamaliuk and Kyle Topping scored for Kelowna, Roman Basran made 29 saves. Attendance was 4,461 at the Sandman Centre.

Red Deer 5, Lethbridge 2

Josh Trazwell scored three times to lead Red Deer before 3,677 at the Enmax Centre. Brett Davis and Dawson Barteaux also scored for Red Deer, Ethan Anders made 40 saves. For Lethbridge, Dylan Cozens and Calen Addison scored goals, Carl Tetachuk made 10 saves.

Prince Albert 5, Regina 2

A 2-0 Pats lead after one didn't hold, as Prince Albert scored twice in the second and three more times in the third to take the win, before 4,111 at the Brandt Centre. Raiders lighting the lamp were Brayden Watts with two, Cole Nagy, Evan Herman and Allaksel Protas with one each. Boston Bilous made 23 saves. Riley Krane scored a pair of first period goals for the Pats, Danton Belluk had 28 saves.

Winnipeg ICE 7, Saskatoon Blades 6

Saskatoon led 4-2 after one, but the ICE. Winnipeg's Nino Kinder scored three goals, Nolan Orzeck, James Form, Brad Ginnell and Michal Tepley also scored for the ICE, who scored six unanswered goals to power Winnipeg's attack. Dean McNabb made 23 saves for the ICE. For Saskatoon, Kyle Crnkovic had a hat trick, Scott Walfor 2 goals and as assist, Riley McKay a single, Nolan Maier 32 saves. Attendance was 3,187 at the SaskTel Centre.

Tri-City Americans 3, Seattle Thunderbirds 1

Sasha Mutala, Samuel Huo and Mutala again into an empty net with 1.4 seconds left gave the Ams the road win before 3,359 at Accesso ShoWare Center. Beck Warm made 31 saves, allowing just a mid third period goal to Seattle's Andrej Kukuca. Roddy Ross made 21 saves for the Thunderbirds.

Medicine Hat Tigers 2, Swift Current Broncos 0

25 saves by Mads Sogaard and goals by Tyler Prezluso and Bryan Lockner powered Medicine Hat to the road win, before 2,092 at Innovation Credit Union I-Plex. Isaac Poulter had 45 saves for Swift Current.

Portland Winterhawks 4, Vancouver Giants 2

With 4,088 looking on at the Langley Events Centre, it was Portland skating to the third straight win to open the season. Clay Hanus, Tyson Kozak, Lane Gillis and Kozak again scored the Winterhawks goals, Joel Hofer made 33 saves. For Vancouver, Milos Roman and Tristen Nielson scored goals, Trent Miner made 24 saves.

Victoria Royals 2, Prince George Cougars 1

A Keanu Derungs goal at 4:56 of the third period stood up as the winning goal for the Royals, in front of 5,697 at Save-On-Foods Memorial Arena. Matej Toman scored for the Cougars. In goal, Shane Farkas made 22 saves for Victoria, Taylor Gauthier 33 for Prince George, who fell to 0-3-0-0.
